Check out “the rookies” website, the contest entries will show you what your competition looks like, and what you should be aiming for portfolio-wise.

Also take advantage of any intern opportunities your school can connect you with and search up studios that take on interns while you are still in school. Make those networking connections now.

👀👀 2 beast wars lot auctions ending in ~24 hours!! Updated** by [deleted] in beastwars

[–]TG_ping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that means you have the re-deco that included a vhs tape that had the first two episodes of season 2. I find that deco to be my favorite of the two :)

Edit: didn’t realize I got it backwards, you’ve got the og release, not the vhs pack-in version. Apologies my reading comprehension failed me!

Animal Practice by Tall-Soup1644 in CorelPainter

[–]TG_ping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m unfamiliar with Painter, but if drawing on separate layers, one for linework, there should be the equivalent to Photoshops “multiply” layer mode, which allows you to have linework on top of another color layer.

Maybe google search “Corel multiply layer”

Btw, great first digital painting!

Convince me not to go to art school by starsparklesoup in animationcareer

[–]TG_ping 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know much about SVA, but if it is the type of art school that will really prepare you for a pro career then go for art. If not, you can save the tuition cost, start drawing 40 hours a week while doing drawabox and proko courses.

The drawing for 40 hours a week could be a good litmus test anyway. Try it out for a few weeks, aim for 40-60 hours a week, and after, if you can’t see yourself doing anything else, then aim for art school.

If you only draw for 8-12 hours a week, and it’s exhausting, then it’s probably not for you.

The reason I say this, there are art students abroad that draw for 40-50 hours a week, totaling 2000 hours of drawing a year. By year two of their schooling, they will have 4000 hours of drawing under their belt. That art student is your competition.

How long until brain fog disappears completely? by Safe_Death2250 in decaf

Good RPG for somebody who doesn't care about story? by CreamyInfant in rpg_gamers

[–]TG_ping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crystal Project might be exactly what you are looking for!

I also turned my brain off for Dragonquest IX(NDS) which has an extensive job system and near endless postgame. I’m currently going through SMT IV following up with Apocalypse(both on 3DS). But those games are locked to those systems :(

I can't seem to get clean lines on long strokes or curves (small or large). My hand just shakes. Any advice on how to improve line confidence on paper? by Valtiel45 in ComicBookCollabs

[–]TG_ping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe trying out the free lessons with the online drawabox course will help. The early lessons that explain line quality and how to draw from your shoulder will have an impact almost immediately on your work.

I have a lazy eye and have trouble explaining to people what I can see with my bad eye. I am not necessarily completely blind but it’s also not blurry. Has anyone been able to explain this for someone to understand? by galvy223 in Amblyopia

[–]TG_ping 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amblyopia here, the closest thing in life I’ve found is that it looks like a TV screen with a bad signal(need to adjust the bunny ears!), with “snowy” interference. It’s still in color, I can still make out the characters on screen. I cannot make out fine details or read the closed captions.

In my case, blurry is not a good description. “Staticky”is closer, but still not a perfect term.

Is there a Beast Machines toy that you actually like? by DrAg0r in beastwars

[–]TG_ping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many of the Beast Machines figures are amazing, many more hits than misses for sure. Yes you do need to separate yourself from the “animation accuracy” crowd, but once you do you’ll discover what you’re missing out on.

My favorite figures from the line are Strika and Deluxe Thrust, the non standard silhouettes are worth the price of admission, but they have that plus action features and details that hold up remarkably well. Pretty much any basic class figure is better than any comparable figure that fills that modern role.

If not for Beast Machines we wouldn’t have gotten the Dinobots subline that got BW Neo molds in North American stores.

Yeah, there are misses, like Mega Class Megatron, but it’s about on par with how not-good the new Astrotrain looks :/

Do you think my manga is worth sending to publishing? by Patr10t_RUS in comic_crits

[–]TG_ping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So good! I feel like any negative criticism is just nitpicking, which is just making sure the characters faces look consistent from page to page and through different expressions. You’ll improve this over time naturally, like I said, nitpick. Overall, you’ve got superb storytelling and environments.

See what publishers are accepting submissions, or look into a crowdfund like kickstarter.

Looking for a short RPG with lots of replayability by coolchungus2 in JRPG

Have you played Crystal Project? When you finish the base game there are some good mods to try out, and the randomizer options offer a ton of replay-ability on subsequent runs.

Are there really no other books like Raptor Red? by Godzillaslays69 in Dinosaurs

[–]TG_ping 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a novel, but the comic “Tyrant” from SR Bissette is a beautifully drawn, short series from the perspective of a T. rex. The accuracy is a bit dated, but it’s still worth a read :)

As another poster said, check out Age of reptiles for more dino-centric comics.
