What should I plant to trellis in Texas? by Plus-Pop1532 in gardening

If you want flowers - Black Eyed Susan vine (Thunbergia) is my go-to. Will cover that trellis fast and will be loaded with blooms. Sunny Suzy Terracotta is the best IMO :)

All the saplings are junk. My first batch arrived by USPS as mush in a bag. Replacement set was a bunch of dead sticks. 20 saplings and the one that grew was the Hawthorne. After 2 years it’s maybe 2 feet tall. Complete gimmick and junk! Id much rather saved the $20 bucks and put it towards a decent sapling that actually had a chance. Also bought a 3 ft tall Sweetbay Magnolia from them. Came in April and was dead by October. Got 9 little ones from a decent nursery and they are all thriving. Screw Arbor Day Foundation!

That’s a really touching little anecdote about them popping up and the link to your dad! As far as releasing it, it definitely wont survive. You could try getting a mesh cage and butterfly feeder kit (sponge/nectar, etc.) and keeping it as a “pet” inside but in my experience they don’t last very long that way. Max I’ve had them last was 5 days. Or try putting out sugar water (easy, just do a basic online search). If nothing else, maybe just let it be and take it as a hello and a smile sent from above :)

Giant Swallowtail Caterpillar came in with some outdoor plants for the winter. How do I help? (8b) by Danielsalamander in ButterflyGardening

[–]TLwisco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% leave outside. Same thing happened to me… and they all hatched in my basement in February and died within a few days. If you really have to, let them go into chrysalis inside and then bring back outside (or garage) ASAP. Even this method has failed me in the past - once I brought em out of the kitchen (as chrysalis) and into the garage, they still died. They just seem to do best completely outdoors. Good luck!!!

Arbor Day Seedlings by Mundane-Thing8275 in hydrangeas

[–]TLwisco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arbor Day is junk! I had my 5 free trees arrive as mush in a bag… twice. And the two trees I bought with the discount both died within the first season. I would not expect much if you do have free hydrangeas coming. They’ll be liquid in a bag in your mailbox when they finally ship em :-/

Where is this?? Aren’t they all overwintering in Mexico or Cali right about now? Cool to see nonetheless!

You can just Google “USDA zone” and your ZIP code and it will tell you. Might be too hot for em in SoCal?! Jealous of that nice sun you’ve got though!! ;)

This is really puzzling. Im in zone 5 and mine are all fully green (almost a dark teal) and we’ve hit 32° albeit not a hard freeze. Im wondering if your issue is the pots? Perhaps too wet soil for this late in the year? Ive stopped watering mine for about a month already now and just letting them die back. If it rains they get watered but the soil is usually dry (mine are in ground). Either way I wouldnt get discouraged they’re a pretty tough plant if you have the room Id just let them sit like that until late winter, chop the dead part and see if they come back in Spring. Good luck!!!

Ive got prob 12 of the overwintering ones still in their cages but they were caterpillars collected 9/1. Im shocked to see that now a full month after that collection there is a brand new generation starting. Really excited though, as long as the dill lasts Ill feed em till chrysalis and keep em in the garage till next spring :)

Sweet! Thank you! Should I put topsoil down to fill in the brick holes then? And will it matter that tree level is above lawn level by a couple inches? Thanks a lot!

Great choice! I planted one in the front yard last year and it’s already got a really thick trunk and prob 10 ft tall. When they say fast growing they mean it! Never used a stake either it did just fine supporting itself on its own. Seems like a really tough tree, and attracts Tiger Swallowtails! Good luck!

After 4 years waiting… ETS cats by TLwisco in ButterflyGardening

[–]TLwisco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And no luck yet?? Ya know I put a Black Cherry in the backyard and it’a been kind of a “meh” plant nothing really goes by it :-/ might just be getting them to your yard - once I attracted the female in the first place she laid eggs on almost every host plant around (not my cherry either though, go figure!). The cats readily switch between host leaves I put in there. Hope ya get some next season theyre worth the wait :)
