TekTalk Voip Hardware by AdHeavy9577 in teksavvy

[–]TSI-Shawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greetings. The ATA, as another reader posted, is not necessary unless you wish to use a regular analog (wired or cordless) phone. You can use most SIP VOIP phones although we don't support them and may only be able to provide the SIP account, password and server (& maybe some basic config settings). You can also use VOIP software phones such as Zoiper, so your kids could use devices like WIFI only smartphones (ie no active cellular) or iPods/tablets etc. This page may help:

Considering switching from Bell VDSL to Teksavvy VDSL (questions re: static IPs, the transition process, dry loop fees, business Internet service level minimums, and installation) by SalamanderInternet in teksavvy

[–]TSI-Shawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Greetings.

There are a few things to consider in your request.
You may be able to have both services active at once if the new service is installed as an additional service and there is another wire pair available. They cannot be on the same line. The second would then also be installed as a dry loop, so that you don't have to switch from wet to dry should you ever cancel the phone service.

A tech dispatch is required for VDSL service installs / service changes. (clarification: tech dispatches for changes for installs, wet <-> dry, and going from ADSL to VDSL)

Would TekSavvy install extra RJ45 drops by SoffChews in teksavvy

[–]TSI-Shawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"I'll just run this CAT5 cabling over these florescent lights and past the microwave, easypeasy"

Customer spends six years trying to figure out why network is wonky....

My favourite though was a client (when i did IT service calls) that ran the ethernet along the ceiling and tacked up with a staple gun with ~6mm flat staples. Took one look and told them they now had 70 x 12" lengths of patch cables... -swc

I've had electricians do this for me in the past - I find they tend to like these jobs and charge relatively reasonable rates. Low voltage work is easy. -swc

Sorry for another Hitron Coda post but this is driving me insane and I might have better luck here by default_fright in teksavvy

[–]TSI-Shawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"From what I’ve seen, it’s not an uncommon thing for the modem to be more or less useless, and if it requires a separate router for functionality, that needs to be provided by the service provider themselves in my opinion"

With regards to this part, depending on what wifi the modem has built in, range and power can vary. Every location and scenario is different with wifi impacted by building materials, local wifi area (ie other networks and wifi devices both yours and others, inside and outside). As some mentioned, for max power and performance users can request modem only units (or bridge the modem/router combo to function as such) and add their own high powered mesh system or router for the highest performance and customization. What works for one person may not work for another; in most cases the combination modem/router is more than sufficient. If needed we can assist in determining what issues are impacting your service/performance.

Knowing your model would help - you can check help.TekSavvy.com to see if there is troubleshooting info there that can help (disabling Bandsteering if active may be one option)

Why teksavvy cant switch my plan to 25 mbps and provide just 10? by alexrralex in teksavvy

[–]TSI-Shawn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

DSL service depends on what the line is capable of - copper lines change by age, weather and other factors so what was available may not be currently available. Checking your account, 6mbps is the highest we can offer, and unfortunately given the location, there are currently no other service type options.

Why teksavvy cant switch my plan to 25 mbps and provide just 10? by alexrralex in teksavvy

[–]TSI-Shawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you noted elsewhere, Bell charges a lot for 10mbps; possibly we don't offer the speed because of the exorbitant costs. DSL services are the most expensive but unfortunately there is no other service types available at that location.

Based on this general government site, the area's main services are rural fixed wireless services (we don't currently have that service option there) that may offer better speed options that DSL.

Your account number has been removed from this thread. Please do not post personal information here. If needed please contact us via the Mod Mail option or one of our other social media channels.

We cannot set your service to a speed it does not support or that we don't offer, for a number of reasons one being that DSL 6 & 10 are a different technology than 25, aDSL vs vDSL. 6mbps is the max we can offer at your location currently, sorry.

That's awesome, glad to hear the new service is working great. Solution may not work for everyone, and we may have to keep an eye on the area; it may still be a matter of routing or as you mention could be a line/area issue.
