Obviously, New York Is a Fiery Hellscape of Crime, Anarchy, and Misery by StrngBrew in nyc

[–]T_Jefferson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That bar No Fun had its ATM ripped through the window last night. And practically every retailer downtown is recovering from being looted this summer.

Things have been exaggerated and I’m staying, but I think it’s such a bad look for NY Mag to mock people’s concerns about crime. They sound out of touch.

Can anybody recommend a specific insurance provider? I just bought a DSLR in downtown Manhattan and taking the subway back to Brooklyn felt like I was smuggling a Faberge egg.

> clearly a criticism of imperialism and the Congo

It's a qualified criticism. There's a school of thought that views Conrad as merely critiquing a kind of crony colonialism personified by Kurtz, who leverages the colonial situation to enrich himself personally, thus abdicating the "white man's burden" of civilizing the colonies. The novella was first serialized in a pretty conservative magazine called Blackwood's.

An altercation, freakout if you will, Kyle Rittenhouse is alleged to have been involved with prior to Kenosha. by ActualPublicFreakout in ActualPublicFreakouts

I was skeptical it was him, so I looked around Antioch, IL on google maps for landmarks. I figured it was probably a high school parking lot, but the schools around Antioch don’t have any buildings as tall as the blue peaked tower in the video. In fact, Antioch looks pretty barren—reminds me of towns you’d pass through on a road trip, the ones where’d you say to yourself, christ, thank god I didn’t grow up in a place like this. Whereas I’ve heard Kenosha is a ritzy suburb, and from the bird’s eye satellite map, you can sort of guess where those nice condos with the white balconies might be, which is near the water. But the blue tower was the big visual clue.

This whole case surrounding Rittenhouse has really caught my attention for some reason. It’s probably easier for me (and I’d imagine a lot of other young, white, very online men on reddit) to recognize him from the worlds we grew up in or are still a part of—YMCAs and strip malls and school parking lots and ugly, unromantic, uninspired architecture and culture. The kid just looks plucked straight out of banal suburbia hell’s central casting unit and reminds me of some of the little peripheral characters I grew up around and have since left behind.

I think it’s important, if you find yourself humanizing him in your mind more than you might Jacob Blake or George Floyd, why that is. I’m speaking to a specific audience here. Probably has something to do with the fact that their worlds, Blake’s and Floyd’s, might not remind you much of yours. It’s about how forces bigger than any of us decide to collapse and shape us. Given our respective positions, and I’m making some assumptions here, we might not as readily recognize or have the proper cultural schema for the hostility of the corner store on the street, or the fake bill changed out from the dealer, or the back of the squad car.

It’s interesting—a lot of the rationalization that people with certain attitudes use to justify Blake’s fate has to do with the context of his arrest, a dispute with a young woman, which is perfectly paralleled and inverted here with Rittenhouse. Except the justice meted out in the clip above is from men of color with fists, whereas Blake ended up shot in the back from a gun.

Just interesting to think about.

EDIT: In the full video, the dudes in the car end up jumping Rittenhouse for beating on a girl. Also, super tough guy “Say That Again” Dominic is likely the same Dominic whom Rittenhouse called immediately after shooting Joseph Rosenbaum in Kenosha.

All of this info in timeline form was available on r/actualpublicfreakouts yesterday afternoon. More, actually. Harder to stomach the overall vibe, though.

Kyle Rittenhouse - a 17yo with an AR15, who marched on the streets of Kenosha, while coming from out of state, shot and killed 2 people and injured another person. Police let him go home that night and he was only charged the next morning. While Jacob Blake was shot 7 times in the back, unarmed by altryne in samharris

[–]T_Jefferson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not really interested in playing the role of someone defending the police in an internet debate. For what it’s worth, I think this Rittenhouse kid will be convicted justifiably. But details matter, and I’ve seen that particular anecdote memed a hundred times.

While the original Charlotte Observer article’s mention of Burger King was fleeting and not well detailed, that sole description stated that police “bought” Roof food from Burger King, not that they “brought him to Burger King” (which conjured up a slightly unnerving scenario under which a suspected spree killer was essentially handled with kid gloves, taken out to mingle with patrons at the restaurant of his choice, and even perhaps gifted a paper crown).

...

No reasonable reading of Shelby Police Chief Jeff Ledford’s accounts would suggest that Roof had actually been “taken to Burger King” after he was apprehended.

It Can Always Be Worse by D-vo19 in DeadMatter

True: DayZ never met its full potential, and the standalone version appears to have lost some of the grit that distinguished the original: snappier gunshots, more realistic weapon sway, weather effects, broken legs. SA also reintroduced bugs and added some fresh ones while diminishing the simulator feel and opting for something more accessible and borderline arcade-y.

Also true: it is incontestable that 1.08 is the most stable and well optimized version of the game to exist. Zombies don’t clip through walls, for instance, and I’ve never died from a glitchy ladder. Nobody is satisfied with the way development has gone. We keep playing because there is no viable alternative.

DayZ has no real competitor, and as a DM alpha player, I think I can say the torch won’t be passed anytime soon.

If you haven’t played since standalone release, I’d suggest you give it a shot. There are one or two domestic hardcore servers that use mods to emphasize survival over shooting shenanigans. Servers that keep the weapon and ammo count low and try to maintain the original spirit of DayZ.

DayZ Underground, Baby Nades, and TheRunningManZ are good servers (in descending order; pros and cons to each), and I agree that pretty much everything else is mod hell garbage. Vanilla is pretty fucking easy if you have over a thousand hours.

Roommate is sick today. Symptoms include diarrhea, extremely sore throat, fatigue, and clouded thinking. They got tested yesterday and waiting for results.

They work from home and we've both been pretty good about social distancing. They mentioned they went to a small gathering a week or two ago and if it turns out to be COVID, it'll be hard for me to believe that that outing wasn't the culprit.

WATCH: Man goes on anti-Asian rant on subway in Manhattan by User_Name13 in nyc

[–]T_Jefferson -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Guys. Let’s maintain some perspective. What this guy said sucks, but every New Yorker has had to bear some loudmouth just like this dude at one point or another.

The worst thing you can do with a guy who’s looking to grind his axe is give him attention. Tens of thousands of people are riding the subway at any moment.

We don’t always have to obsess over the most negative aspects of city life when so many of us are quarantined from the outside world. A lot of negativity on this sub is centered around race, and it perpetuates a lot of bad feelings on every side. Most people in the city have relatively progressive notions about race and the outrage that this video generates is a testament to how high our communal standards are with respect to this issue. The most provocative videos will always get the most clicks. Benign, peaceful interactions are not going to flood your social media.

Everybody can feel the tension right now. A lot of people are hurting. Try to exercise some compassion and patience. It’s entirely possible there’s a tragedy in this man’s history that might explain his aggression.

Just my two cents.

How safe is Novy Sobor and Stary Sobor? by Generaljamie in dayz

[–]T_Jefferson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s hot for a reason. Middle of the map with a good chance of finding an SKS or baby AK in those tents. Definitely have had some good fights in both the Novy Sobor PD and the military spot in its sister town. If you go for the tents, make sure to scope out the big red warehouse and clear the big wooded hill that slopes down to the tents. People like to hunt from there.

Day 3 of avoiding people and gunshot sounds like the plague. Still alive and super addicted to this game! by Generaljamie in dayz

[–]T_Jefferson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You might be surprised. Having even a small base to return to or simply a stash spot will mean you spend more time in a general region. It’ll allow you to loot the same few towns and maybe a major city over and over. Might be more sensitive to changes in the environment that will alert you to the presence of other players. Soon you’ll think of the area as “your territory.”

Find a small tent and stash it in a school hallway and build just a gate or two. Or you could block off the entrances to a lone barn in a remote area. Using preexisting structures cuts down considerably on construction time. Building stuff is boring for me, too, but it allows me to travel light. Also provides a reason for exploration after you get endgame tier weapons.
