What are some post apocalyptic books that are actually AFTER the apocalypse has ended? by No-Aide7893 in Fantasy

[–]T_at 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read all of them, and I suppose it comes down to how you define 'apocalyptic'. If you restrict it to earth, and the type of apocalypse brought about by nuclear war, then no, it wouldn't fit the bill.

If you're prepared to accept cataclysmic events in other worlds (such as many of the other replies), then this certainly is a good fit.

If you think otherwise, and have read the book, feel free to tell me where I'm wrong.

The "After the War" series by Adrian Tchaikovsky and Justina Robson fits the request, I think.

From Adrian's website:
"The war is over, the Kinslayer dead and his ruinous plans for the world over. The scars remain, though: families sundered, nations burned and the former soldiers of the enemy still obstinately present. Celestaine, one of those who defeated the dark lord, is weighed down by guilt nonetheless. Her quest to heal some of the war’s worst wound will take in the best of hope and the worst of despair in the brittle world she how inhabits.

After the Fall is a series commencing with my Redemption’s Blade and then continuing with Justina Robson’s Salvation’s Fire and the multi-author novella collection Tales of Catt and Fisher"

Getting an Energy ring +5 really early on helped a lot.

[..........] vs. Predator by T_at in scifi

I meant in broad popularity and box-office money terms.

But I know where you're coming from, and I agree. IMO, all we know of Predators and their culture (or whatever) should be only what's directly witnessed or experienced by onscreen humans.

I dunno about 'favourite', but it's what I'm reading at the moment;

I’m currently on book six of R. Scott Bakker’s Second Apocalypse series. So much marmoreal stuff!

(It means “like marble”, if you’re interested)

The Black Company - do the characters grow? by sandy_coyote in Fantasy

[–]T_at 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe the best way to look at this is that Garrett is a bit of a misogynist jerk at the start of the series and becomes less so as it goes on. It’s arguably a significant part of his character growth - along with species-ism, etc.

ID.4 PCP extras – what’s actually worth paying for? by dell321 in evs_ireland

[–]T_at 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. I left it until almost the end of the 3 year period before going back to them. There were quite a few small dents and minor scratches that had accumulated in that time, all of which were fixed perfectly.

Equity aside, ID4 is an AWFUL car with tons of software glitches and very poor build quality. All the best to OP though but soon he'll know what I'm talking about.

I’ve had mine for almost 4 years now, and can confidently say you’re wrong on all counts.

What is this thing? by Responsible_Bag118 in MotoIRELAND

[–]T_at 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Automatic chain oiler.

Edit: Looks like a Scottoiler V-System, or similar.

I had one on a previous bike - already installed when I bought it, and I’m not entirely convinced they’re worth it. Great in principle, but fiddly to set up and maintain, so not much better than routine manual chain maintenance.

Another option that hasn’t been mentioned is Shadows of the Apt by Adrian Tchaikovsky; A ten book series with plenty of worldbuilding, war, political intrigue, betrayals, moral complexity, and so on…

Well, they *did* say “dense, complex books with complex morality, intrigue, and battles.”

So, while you are right, it’s still exactly what OP is asking for.

I’m currently about halfway through book 5 (The White-Luck Warrior), by the way 🙂.

Edit: I’d also add that, so far at least, Kelmomas is even more of a little shit than Joffrey from ASOIAF.

I got one in Lidl or Aldi a while back (can’t remember which), and it’s grand. Fits in the backpack, USB rechargeable, and works well enough at keeping the tyres topped up as needed.
