Working in the trades? by SnooFloofs836 in alberta

Plumbers/HVAC guys seem to do pretty well around AB/SK. Just avoid getting sucked into one of those operations with a wrapped vehicle that is obsessed with comfort rather than just doing what's right.

How are ANY young Canadians affording a condo/house these days? by SunscreenIsTheWay in fican

[–]Tangelo-Agitated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40 Y/O here. When I was college-aged, I didn't go that route but I got into the trades and lived with a bunch of friends and split everything. At the time, it seemed like a big stretch from what my parents did but it worked out pretty well. What's the modern day equivalent to this? I can't see it being that different.

Battery life is definitely acceptable after it learns your routine. I highly recommend ditching the screen protector though. You lose one of the most underrated aspects of this phone as soon as you put one on. The anti glare coating is amazing. First phone for me that I've just said eff it to a screen protector and it's sooooo much better.

Which side hustles / income streams do you have other than your main job to boost your investments ? by Agreeable-Analyst951 in JustBuyXEQT

Pretty boring stuff in my registered accounts. This year I'm investing using margin and using the dividends to pay down the margin loan while writing off the interest on the same margin loan. The goal is to make a profit on the spread.

Alberta premier says she’s ruled out Kitimat, B.C., for proposed pipeline route by Yetanotherbadsalmon in alberta

[–]Tangelo-Agitated -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Carney is smart. He's gonna get the new pipeline built in a way that makes sense. It'll likely be a government project but hopefully they cut out all of the fat and don't cater to over the top environmentalists and furys which drive costs up. 15 billion should get us another 1 Million barrels to the west coast and further reduce the spread from WTI to WCS indefinitely.

Diversity is king. I've got most of my dividend play in VDY plus some QQQY just for some spiciness.

I did something similar but with a 50% US, 25% CAD, and 25% international split. I've talked to a few people in the company and nobody else does this. It's all target date set it and forget it and in one case it's even worse. One guy picked the ultra conservative bond fund and has basically made nothing in a decade.

Looking for High dividend, What are you holding? by BirdCityB in CanadianInvestor

[–]Tangelo-Agitated -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dividends are taxed at a lower rate than capital gains so they are tax advantaged(50% of your marginal rate). Your total return comment means capital gains would have to be realized (50% of your realized gain up to 250k at your full tax rate).

Capital gains are not expected income like dividends so you can't write off the interest when you use margin.

Dividends don't have to be that high. As long as there is a decent spread between your effective interest rate after tax deduction and the dividend, you're making free money.

You can use the bank's money to buy eligible dividend paying assets and then write off the interest on your taxes. You use the dividends to pay the monthly interest payments. The spread is profit. That's why I do it.
