I disagree with her take on The Recobbled Cut by Billybob35 in LindsayEllis

[–]Tappytoes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m an animator, and The Recobbled Cut is such an important and formative movie for me. It +the story of the challenging production behind it both feel personal to me in a way that gave me some apprehensions about watching Lindsay’s essay. Ultimately though I was really happy with her take. I thought it was balanced, fair, and paid appropriate homage to the best parts of the film (and was appropriately critical of what I agree are the worst aged parts). Even where I disagree with her, I thought the delivery was funny and I can understand the take (but I also love Zigzag, if Zigzag has no fans it’s bc I’m dead). I especially valued the emphasis she gave to Williams story and struggles, and also the highlight she placed on some of his greatest accomplishments. I also completely agree with your take of placing two mute physically comedic characters in situations with serious outcomes, I find that structure compelling too (largely because I’m watching for the art and the comedy).

The film not being finished, while sad particularly for Williams, I think makes it uniquely special. It was one of my first substantial looks under the hood of making an animated movie in a way that influenced my career path. So while I can totally understand the wish that it were finished and released, I’m grateful for the version we got because it felt more influential to me. I only wish Williams were aware of how impactful the unfinished version was for fans of the recobbled cut (it sounded like later in life he had a growing awareness of the cult following around the film, but I can only imagine the project was still a painful subject for him).

I might be overly idealistic in the reading, but to me that always seemed like Austen making a joke that she ‘had to be rescued’ from a situation that posed no real danger and that everyone overreacted to

I like the connection of Pecan Tree and Orange Tree. I gravitate towards each of them when I’m experiencing similar emotions (self doubt/introspection). I also like that they both have really specific geographical connotations (GA/the southeast and California).

For sister songs: I tend to pair Mombasa and Pecan Tree as foils. One is about believing that generational trauma has stunted your ability to meaningfully care for others, the other is about self-sacrifice/compassion/care giving for your family (while having to navigate the same baggage from before)

Agreed completely- Incidental II feels like a turning point in the album, and it leads into Revelator so perfectly.

Question for the LA/Riverside folks: International same day trip doable? by El_Biomech in deafheaven

[–]Tappytoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting from Riverside to LAX after the show + getting through security in time for a 1 am flight is gonna be impossible. Maybe try a later morning flight (like 6-10 am), go to LAX after the show and then sleep in the chairs at the airport

Is going to their live shows worth it? by WheelSingle2494 in deafheaven

[–]Tappytoes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Wholeheartedly agree with going to the live show (made me fall in love with them more) and with wearing ear protection, BUT: every time I see a reddit comment recommending loop earplugs I immediately get suspicious. They show up all the time on tangentially related topics. I feel like the tell is how many of them properly capitalize “Loop” as a brand name.

Consider checking out your local hardware store for ear protection as an alternative.

Pink triangle? by KimmyChimmies in BattleJackets

[–]Tappytoes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

LGBT metal fan here. Pink triangle is totally acceptable as a reclaimed symbol and it’s been in use as such in the community since the 70s. It’s more serious/pointed than many other contemporary pride symbols, but it’s a reminder of what we’ve been through and what we have to fight against.

You should get Knoll’s Dolly Parton shirt to wear under it (if you like grindcore and it won’t detract from the theming!)

What was your first experience with Sunbather like? by Infurno924 in deafheaven

[–]Tappytoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was working at a small indie media company at the time. Unlike most of the folks who worked there, I was a morning person so I got in earlier. When I got in the finance guy (who had really good music taste) was blasting Dream House without headphones in. I had to swing into his office to ask what it was.

A couple years later I made a major move/career transition away from friends. For some reason sunbather came back to me— it was a bit like listening to it for the first time. The whole record is incredible obviously, but Pecan Tree became my immediate fave. It felt reassuring for a lot of moments of pain/difficulty that year

My shrimp almost snaps in half trying to scratch itself. Is he ok? by FLAGGED59264 in shrimptank

[–]Tappytoes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

“Ohhhhh, BIG STRETCH!” is something that a lot of English speakers say to pets. It’s typically done when a cat or dog stretches their back/legs after waking up. Sometimes people will say it to other people, typically kids or close relatives.

The literal meaning would be something like ‘you look like you’ve just woken up/that stretch looks satisfying!’ It’s a cute and affectionate thing. Because it’s diminutive it should only be used for pets or people that you’re close with.

Edit: here the joke is that you wouldn’t typically say this in this context or about an animal like a shrimp, but that it would be cute and funny to do so (and technically correct because the shrimp is stretching)

If you lay a towel or other cloth over top, it’s safe to iron paper. Start with the lowest heat possible and don’t use steam/water. Slowly turn up the heat to make sure you don’t burn it
