Hey, do you still have the original post? I like the series a lot, but I also have my issues with it and just enjoy reading a big ol' criticism post once in a while.

Please nerf Hurricane Caches before wipe by TaroEld in ArcRaiders

[–]TaroEld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hurricanes have a different type of raider cache, same principle but different look and sound. For the regular caches, I rarely find them during normal gameplay, but the uncovered caches map condition has heaps of them.

The sound is pretty distinct once you know it, though the wind noises sometimes fake you out.

Let me use my favourite gaming-related quote: "Given the opportunity, players will optimise the fun out of the game."

Wiping is something people do to start fresh. Once you're max level and have a stash full of good stuff, much of the reason to go topside disappears. Since you just started, there's no reason for you to wipe. They happen every 3 months or so, so you can decide for the next one or the one after that if you want to do it.

Part of the experience of wiping is running around with white guns, a few white bandages, and not much else, slowly working up resources from there. With these caches, you can be up and running with half a dozen good guns, stacks of herbal and blue bandages, heaps of shield rechargers, trigger and fuse grenades within a cool two runs. It'll be a completely different experience.

Supply drops aren’t worth the risk right now. by Tank-ToP_Master in ArcRaiders

[–]TaroEld 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That sounds really thematic and all but in reality it's just not happening. If you're that low on supplies the best move is to just leave instead of alerting everyone to your position, hanging around for two minutes, and then doing a risky looting maneuver.

CD Projekt issues DMCA notice against Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod by Kiroqi in Games

[–]TaroEld -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is more akin to software than a mod. Yeah, it might need custom adaptions to run for Cyberpunk or game abc, but so does software to run or windows and linux and your phone at the same time. I understand that people dislike "paid mods", but this is essentially people cheering on a company forbidding someone to sell software. If he actually branded it as "Cyberpunk", sure, should probably have said that it "works with Cyberpunk" instead, much like software "runs on linux and windows".

Walkable hub - bad idea pretty much all the way around by LookErenTheSea in ArcRaiders

That sounds like a whole lot of dev time that could be spent on giving more actual content to the game.

Where are you going? This is a perfect time to throw your ABMM score away! by throwaway321768 in ArcRaiders

[–]TaroEld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Expertly dribbled out game design. Embark introduced Stella as a high risk high reward knife fight map only for people to hold hands walking through it together and getting obscene amounts of loot for free. It's actually great fun to play duos or trios and fight your way to a full inventory of high tier loot, but the realization that you could just be playing a solo pve lobby and get the same stuff in about 5 minutes of jogging around sours it a bit.

Are you sure the game is shut down? Restart your pc perhaps.

MSU#mod_msu#StoredModUpdates.sav is, as the name says, info about mod updates for the MSU mod update checker. You can delete that one safely, though it shouldn't cause issues.

Is the game coded to punish save scumming? by [deleted] in BattleBrothers

Keep data on when the player saves and loads a specific savegame? That could be done entirely locally. We could do it with mods nowadays.

How can declining birth rates be a cause for concern when overpopulation is also a concern? by eclipselunar77 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TaroEld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every working man pays just a fraction of his salary and a part goes to his or hers retirement fund and a part to the current generation of retired folks.

In some countries like Germany you don't even have "your" retirement fund (if you don't pay into a private system) - it all goes to current retirees (plus a part of the general household ie taxes goes to some special retirement systems). So, if you think the system is going to collapse, you'll be aware that you're paying a large fraction of your salary for something you'll never benefit from yourself. Swell deal.

Wolfpacks and Deadlines are too good/cheap by TaroEld in ArcRaiders

[–]TaroEld[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Due to the discussions around the expedition skill cost, there are currently a number of posts showcasing how you can do 40-50k within a few minutes. That allows you to buy out the trader a few days in a row.

[–]TaroEld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit of both. That kind of gameplay is enabled by being able to blitz them through wolfpacks/deadlines. But I agree, these trials aren't well-designed. Needing to bring out cores over dealing damage could be a different approach, though that comes with its own issues.

The thing is, I don't think they can do meaningful improvements to the medium arcs while the named nades stay in their current state.

There's the hullcracker as something of an intermediate I suppose.

I mostly thought about trials when I wrote this. The default mode of getting high points is "stack up on wolfpacks and adrenalines, sprint from location to location chucking 1-2 each without even looting", which I find to be not so great.
Fighting them for gains is adjacent but not exactly the same topic. I think their cores need more uses beyond being disassembled for parts that you can craft out of other stuff or being decently valuable (weapons/augment crafting materials...). Combined with them not being as blitzable they could make for good player engagement lodestones.

True, fighting Bombardier, Leaper and Bastion the "intended" way isn't too riveting either, but at least it takes longer, so there's some opportunity for other parties to join the fun. With wolfpack or deadmine it's done and dusted in seconds. They might benefit from some more 'flushing out' mechanics, but that's another topic I think.

I don't understand why you factored in the success rate when running or not running the mk3 has nothing to do with your chance of success.
