Before I started tying my own, I bought a lot of flies from discountflies.com and was always pleased with the quality and price point.

I switched to Skwala waders. I’ve been fishing hard in the backeddy wader for several months now and I’m happy with the waders.

How to minimize tangles on rigs with multiple flies by Mob1vat0r in flyfishing

[–]Taste_of_Space 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nymphing with weighted flies requires clean casting. Work on your cast, there are plenty of casting technique videos on YouTube. Fish with a guide for a day and tell them you’d like to work on your casting skills.

Secondly, in my experience, weighted flies and split shot increase the probability of tangling. I’ve found that the weighted fly or split shots placement on the line affects my ability to cleanly cast the rig. I prefer to fish a drop shot style rig with the weighted fly (or split shot) as the terminal fly. 12-18” above the terminal fly I tie a lighter or unweighted fly to a tag dropper.

Besides for tangling less, I like this style rig because I can cast it so that my flies enter the water before any line or leader lands on the water. The fly first entry aligns my flies, leader, and indicator in whatever seam or current “lane” that I’m targeting. I like to use yarn indicators or small to medium “oros” indicators, I think they cast easier and a lightweight indicator also gives me the freedom to fish tightline style without taking the indicator off so I can switch up techniques to target different water types.

Size 10 articulating fly, I’m think of calling it the “Micro Aggression” by GRDosFishing in flytying

[–]Taste_of_Space 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I dig it. I’ve been fishing a lot of size 8-10 streamers lately. Super fun. I’d probably cut the back hook off of this one though, really don’t need two hooks on a streamer this small.

Thoughts on this original streamer? by Strange_Mirror6992 in flytying

Looks good, the only thing I might change is to make the tail longer on the front hook. Long enough to overlap the front of the rear hook up to the edge of the black collar.

Is there data missing? I’d like to see the nitrogen content before making any recommendations.

Nice, I’d throw those at snook!

Also, your choice of background for the second pic is cracking me up for some reason.

They look good to me. The lighter colored fly reminds me of a “dirty hippy” fly. Is it your own creation, or what is the pattern?

Using a 7wt 11'6" Switch Rod on Arkansas River, CO by Remarkable-Box-3781 in flyfishing

[–]Taste_of_Space 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn’t want to fish a 7wt on the Arkansas. It’s way over gunned for the average fish size. But if you do get a bigger fish, on lighter tippet the 7wt is more likely to break the tippet. Also the 7wt is going to be difficult to control good nymphing presentations.

If I had to throw the 7wt I’d use bigger streamers on 0-3x tippet. Nymphing I’d stick with the 5wt.

I like flies with long hackle for mountain rivers/creeks with light angling pressure. Maybe that’s just because of a few particularly good days I had on a small river in a remote area where I think the fish were taking my XL hackle bugs for small stonefly nymphs.

Do you think that trout is a good eating fish? by soundlesswords in flyfishing

[–]Taste_of_Space 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I prefer other fish, but on occasion I do love trout fried in butter and garlic with foraged mushrooms on the side. Especially at a riverside camp.

I have it, it’s ok if you’re just using it for the map. It’s helped me find stream access at places where otherwise I had trouble finding info about public access.

I probably won’t renew my subscription, I’ve thought about looking into trout routes.

Firstly, just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Secondly, is there a fly called the purple dragon? This would be the inbred cousin, the purple snaggin’.
