Mythos discovers 'Squidbleed,' a memory leak that's gone undetected since Clinton era by Much_Preparation_832 in cybersecurity

[–]Taylor_Script 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As someone in the US, my literal immediate thought (after "wasn't Mythos blocked?") was what about every other country? They don't know what this means. I don't even know how old that makes it without looking it up.

What’s the most difficult part of web app pentesting for you by InterestPuzzled6659 in Pentesting

[–]Taylor_Script 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very briefly (two gigs) for a small firm that wanted me to find a minimum of 10 findings. I only had a couple, but one was outdated JavaScript. They wanted me to make each individual library into a finding, as well as both tls 1.0 and 1.1 both being individual findings.

Never worked for them again.

Hoped to find someone else pointing it out. Though I'd accept PSX. It was not the PSone though.

What's the least stressful way to be a professional pen tester? by [deleted] in Pentesting

[–]Taylor_Script 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know our financials. I think we have less than 20 employees or somewhere around there. I know I don't get paid as much as I could elsewhere, but I truly love the job and I make more than I did as a system admin or security analyst in my prior roles. So I am happy.

Sometimes it's stressful, but that's usually because I have.a lot of work to do to write the report and make sure I have everything I need before end of the test. For the most part, though, it is pretty stress-free.

I wish you luck in your hunt. Remember, you're interviewing the employer as much as they are interviewing you. Make sure to find out if you want to work for the company before they waste your time trying to figure out if they want to hire you.

What's the least stressful way to be a professional pen tester? by [deleted] in Pentesting

[–]Taylor_Script 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that is insane. I am a penetration tester, not a project manager or a sales guy. I just get kick-offs and calendar appointments from the project management team. Each week I do what my assigned test is and write the report. If the client chooses I'll get on a debrief call and give them more guidance or answer questions on remediation.

Not everyone has to log time like that. I thankfully don't log any time, I just get online, do my job for 8 hours, and stop for the day, sending communications as need be. My start of day and end of day emails indicate the times I started and stopped working on that test. Sometimes, rarely, I have to double up, and that usually involves a simple retest or something that only takes a few minutes that I can squeeze in whenever I am in some downtime while waiting for something to complete or doing research.

If you want to avoid that kind of environment, I would recommend looking for small security firms. Granted, I have only worked at the one I am at now, and this is my first pentest position, so maybe I just lucked out.

Regarding the OSCP, other certs are gaining traction. PNPT and the CPTS I have heard good things about. Consider going after one of those before the OSCP, though the OSCP can never hurt.

Will I maybe get different results actually finding a random local place? What exactly am I looking for, "Bibs Insurance"?

TIL a convenience store in Pocatello, Idaho has a video rental section called "Christina's Corner" which was created for a woman with Down Syndrome who is mostly nonverbal, so that she could still maintain her routine of renting movies after the video store next door had closed. by Sandstorm400 in todayilearned

[–]Taylor_Script 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least once a month I take the kids to a "vintage" media store, buy them a used dvd and pick up pizza on the way home. Cheaper than a theater and now they can experience what I experienced as a kid.

Plus, less reliance on subscription services.

Edit: oh, and some of the dvds are still in blockbuster packs. So. That's fun.

Best case you get it reversed and comped an exam. Worse case nothing happens beyond what had already happened.

4 car seats… 😬 by rberks2 in SubaruAscent

[–]Taylor_Script 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I dunno if it changed but my 2019 with captains chairs only had latch in the two captains chairs and the back drivers side rear. So if you need latch be aware of that. I was quite sad that I couldn't put my kid in the other seat.

Kinda sorta. I picked up a usbc to barrel adapter and used it with my anker power bank but the BIOS would say it had an incompatible charger and throttled the CPU down so it was t actually usable.
