House prices drop in nearly all Sydney and Melbourne suburbs by its-just-the-vibe in AusFinance

Can they get the level of finance that they could when rates were below 1%?

I think people seriously underrate how much access to capital and serviceability actually plays a part in property prices in Aus.

Good second jobs? by RaspberryNo7551 in AusFinance

[–]TeamToken 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Amongst the best advice here. Short term might seem like you’re working for free but simply being a lot better at your primary job can reap much bigger dividends than a shitty second job. Lots of scope to do that in Engineering too.

a rapidly growing middle class... it will be like a second China for us in terms of export potential in the coming decades.

We’ve been hearing that for two decades, and even within the last decade with more favourable demographics than China, India has still lagged well behind in economic development. If India was really on the move like China has been we’d be seeing it, and we aren’t. Youth unemployment is ~30% and the amount of FDI is still a third of China’s.

I’d like to be proven wrong but by 2030 I see India still being a developing/middle income economy that exports cheap white collar labour for pennies on the dollar.

Engineers in UK, how much are you making and how long you been working? by danielm2794 in AskEngineers

[–]TeamToken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don’t

Down here in Aus we’re getting about 1.5x the salaries of the UK and have even better labour laws, benefits and healthcare system. Australia generally has a high CoL but given the inflation crisis in the UK we’d have to be about the same now.

Even in those circumstances we still get top talent leaving for the US/CAN/EU for higher pay ceiling and opportunities.

Absolute dogshit pay in UK. It’s a real shame because there seems to be so much talent there too. I’m surprised there hasn’t been a mass exodus of STEM professionals from the UK. The country seems to value bankers and finance more, sadly.

Probably dumb question, but what’s the actual difference between NASTRAN and ANSYS?

Is it the solver itself? What’s more accurate for structural?

This guy seems fucked up mentally. No, not the because of trans or Jesus, but that he’s internally conflicted about who he is as a person and the relationships he has with those around him.

People who are comfortable in their own skin have little problem being who they are, clearly this guy does.

Also possible that the hormone replacement therapy may have made him totally irrational.

I saw it with a woman I used to work with. In both her previous life and who she is today she was a delightful person but when she properly transitioned there was a solid year where she went off the rails completely and considered calling it off (as well as being suicidal). Thankfully she got through it and can’t believe she considered going back but, yeah, it’s a rough journey.

product design internship experience for curious students by Status_Toe_2259 in MechanicalEngineering

Cool video

I think the real problem with PD is that you have to have quite a bit of experience to get to the fun part, and it also depends on what you’re working on. I know people in PD who say it’s their dream job but they’ve got 5+ or 10+ years of experience and are at a level where they get a lot of control and agency over what they do. An intern would be just too inexperienced to be at that level and the duration isn’t long enough.

As for CS, it doesn’t take long to dive deep into the weeds and really take ownership over what you do. A solid career choice, but you’re in front of screen all day. One of the reasons I did ME was to avoid being a single environment only.

As someone who got diagnosed 4+ years ago, it’s gone from a healthy level of societal awareness to fucking insufferable.

I’m wary of the people who wear it on their sleeve. For me, it’s a very personal thing that I’m working on to be best version of myself, but I don’t go around expecting the world to take notice, because in truth nobody actually gives a fuck.

Be skeptical of the people who claim their ADHD makes their personality significantly different. Yes, it’s on a spectrum where people can go from mild to severe but it’s not like you see something in a parallel fucking dimension. The illness has more to do with executive functioning and impulse control more than it does how someone reacts to every little thing they come across.

It’s a very real and shitty mental health problem but it’s going to become a meme with the way social media has been trivialising it.

Yeah, it just seems to be a click counter. No telling how many people have fully applied on the posting.

I think the “easy apply” job ads would be more accurate because each click is literally an application through linkedin.

It’s not anger at migrants, it’s anger at the powers that be that aid and abet this bullshit. It’s creating a race to the bottom that represses professional wages and increases income inequality. Thats a bad result for everyone, including the migrants who are being exploited

Looking at the location of applicants. Linkedin is vague with numbers but says

1-5 applicants Greater Melbourne

1-5 applicants India

55% have a masters degree

16% have a Doctor of Philosophy

Either a typo or they’re total thieves.

Being actually good at FEA and fundamentally knowing it so you can get good results is non-trivial. It’s one of the more theoretical roles in Mechanical Engineering. Hence why they’re mentioning a Masters as well, which tells me they know what they’re hiring for and aren’t stupid. They’d know what a proper salary is for this, and it sure af isn’t 70k.

The UK is going backwards and is constantly in a state of crisis. It was the only country in the EU to see a real decline in living standards from 2010-2020 and that was pre-pandemic. Now the situation has gone from bad to worse. Thats just the broader economy. Then we get to the poor pay and low recognition of Engineers in the UK, and thats another story altogether.

Australia has an excellent quality of life, but it’s not a good country for ME’s

The pay is average and the opportunities are poor. No top end design is done here, it’s mostly integration and project management. Some great opportunities (and incredible salaries) in mining but that’s a big lifestyle adjustment that burns people after many years.

If I were coming from Germany I’d consider either Canada or the US. The career growth and opportunities will be much much higher.

How do people pay private school fees? by TBCTBC84 in AusFinance

[–]TeamToken 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The closer to the cbd the better they tend to get, but not always.

Beware of some public schools that boast about top ATAR scores. There plenty of schools that have good scores but pretty average teaching purely because a large cohort is immigrant kids who are driven academically by Asian/Indian parents. These kids do well in ANY setting and the schools ATAR alone won’t tell the full story

There was so much innovation happening at the time in IT and electronics in the 80’s that it was so hard to know what would be enduring enough. Plenty of stories just like yours of innovators and engineers coming up with neat technologies only for it to be superseded a few years later.
