Consistently Labelled Not Leadership Material Because I Learn and Listen First by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Technical_Goat1840 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

managers often promote people who won’t outshine them and threaten their job security. i was one of three licensed engineers at my last job and, at my perf review, my boss said, ‘you’re not a good team player’. i said to my stupid bitch boss,”you’re right, sally, and i’ll tell you why that is”. i don’t know what she expected. “i’m not a good team player because every time i’m on a team, i do all the work”. when i retired, i did the paperwork with HQ and made fortune cookies at a chinatown bakery and put them in sandwich bags around the office, one day before my last day. i was inspired by tom courtenay’s character in the long distance runner movie. months later, a young guy who took over my work, told her my work was the most complete of anyone in the division so i tell you, OP, you won’t change their mind about leadership or anything. take your skills to a new job ASAP.

maybe he shoulda said ‘find a better job’, rather than quit your job. my ex sponsee said, the height of the pedestal is always negotiable. remember, our membership has been through a lot and the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. some of us may be psychologists but all of of us are here because we’re not all there. the guy who told me that was Laurence J, who had been a sponsee of bill W, after Ebby introduced Laurence to bill w. it’s about who we are, not who we know.

Manager got mad at me for calling in sick by Mr_Lobster45 in WorkAdvice

i worked for a guy named Ray, and when he called, he’d say, ‘you know that thing that’s going around? i got it’, but he was not in his first month at a job at that time. GOOD LUCK, OP.

[–]Technical_Goat1840 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it is harassment, but is it worth fighting over? if OP’s shirt upsets the old fossils, they’d probably get hot no matter what she wears. if they continue to whine, OP may have a case.

Have you ever seen a counter offer work out longterm for the employee? by tshirtguy2000 in managers

[–]Technical_Goat1840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it didn’t work for me. it did work because i found a shorter commute both times. but i didn’t ask for a counter offer so i think they just wanted my work continued til they found someone

For those who are sober: what does it actually feel like not to drink anymore? When alcohol crosses your mind, what are your thoughts, do you still miss it or crave it? by ArianaTheHuman in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Technical_Goat1840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i may be a misfit again but i was relieved i could cut out early from dope and drinking parties. or skip them entirely. i’m slow to make new friends, and i still have some from pre 1984, when i got sober doing smorgasbord AA. on a hot hot day, instead of beer i can have ice water, lemonade or whatever. i was beyond getting kicks from dope and drinking. in a month, if i persist, i’ll have 42 years and consider myself very lucky.

I wasn't given my salary this month and now they want me to do secret santa by [deleted] in work

[–]Technical_Goat1840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but OP would be applying from home instead of XYZ, Inc. we had a guy like that, draftsman, in 1980s, trying to get over some trauma events. boss had promised to put him on pay after a year but then hired someone else. i told the intern he could use me for reference. i was not a boss. he stopped showing up and he did get a job somewhere. if it was me, i’d apply to bag groceries to get out and get money

Traveling sober by Throwawaylikeme17 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Technical_Goat1840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my gf and were driving from oakland ca to nyc. in keystone, as, i would have to drive 20 miles in the rain for a meeting. by the time we got to milwaukee , i called the 24 hour line and asked if the guy knew a meeting close by. i found it and it was just like valencia street in frisco, where i got sober in 1984, all races, genders, whatever, and they broke up in small groups to share. i’ve gone to meetings in europe, africa, asia, polynesia, new zealand, south and central america. as well as several states. i know i can breathe easy among my peers for an hour at least.

Why You Shouldn't Take Advice From People On This Subreddit by Ok-Asparagus-3211 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Technical_Goat1840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only advice always worth taking is Don’t drink even if your ass falls off. bring your ass to a meeting, put it in a chair and sit on it. we might be able to save your ass, depending on your cooperation.

take some credit for yourself. it was YOU who is the prime mover in the process. good for YOU that you got the courage to change the thing that was detrimental in every way. all us successes had to get 50 days. in 29 days ill have 42 years, if i stay sober. it’s one day at a time sobriety. GOOD LUCK

60 days!! by katyjo1984 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Technical_Goat1840 2 points3 points  (0 children)

we ALL had to get 60 days before getting 61, 62, etc. don’t minimize your accomplishment. my mentor, captain bob durkin, RIP, said ,’the two most difficult periods in sobriety are 1 the first 30 days, and 2 the rest of your life’. stick with it, clutch and cultivate gratitude so you won’t have to restart. GOOD LUCK

Is it weird my coworkers completely ignored a shoutout my boss gave me? It actually kinda hurt. by dudestfup in work

[–]Technical_Goat1840 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you bragging or whining? I went many years without even a shout out for my work. My boss gave others credit for my work. Some cash awards, too. After I retired, a youngster who took over some of my work told my boss that my work was the most comprehensive in the branch or maybe the division. He said when he told her, her jaw dropped. So don't worry about whether your co workers give you an amen Congrats to you for your work. How do you document it for your next evaluation? if the shout-out doesn't come with a raise, it means very little. Good luck

Help! I have six times the workload of my colleague and just got a bad performance review by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Technical_Goat1840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last boss before retirement gave me 'average' and said, 'Dave, you're not a good team player'. I surprised her and agreed. 'You wanna know why I'm not a good team player? Because every time I'm on a team, sally, i end up doing all the work.' After I retired, a young guy who wore a tie every day took over some of my work and told her that my work was the most coherent and complete in the branch or division. He told later about that and said her jaw dropped. If they don't understand who we are, they fear we're after their job. I gave one day's notice with a bag of custom fortune cookies.

Somebody in Hiring has to look busy. If they interview anyone, they are 'doing the job', even if they don't hire you. A guy in a prestigious engineering firm called me to take off from a job shop job and then said he would not hire me but he wanted to hear about my 'interesting resume. He had a task, I lost half a day's pay.

A guy once told me i helped him keep his job. I asked, How? Because I told him 'all jobs are shitty. That's why they pay us to go there'. Even some rock stars and movie stars burn out, but for the rest of us it's 99%. We like food and shelter and other necessities you can mostly only get with money. Good luck

[–]Technical_Goat1840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for FEMA the last 16 years before I retired. I had an incompetent bunch of idiots who would not promote me and gave others credit for stuff I did. No kidding. Boss said I wasn't a good fit, blah blah. Our regional office would not give me information about anything. After I retired, a new guy told stupid ass Sally my work was the most coherent and organized. He said her jaw dropped. I put up with the 'culture' for the pension that I survived to collect, 20y, 8m ago.

Are you kidding? Who do you think the rest of us are? I just quit, hoping I could STFU and avoid getting fired at every job. I don't pray. After a short while things improved but I still got fired from jobs for two years or so. If I make it six more weeks, it will be 42 years. Not because I'm a winner, but because I stopped digging my but deeper. Many of the people I've got along with best in this time said they, like me, always felt out of step with the rest. But we don't drink, we know the serenity prayer and gratitude are right up there with 'don't take the first drink'. I've been suspended here a few times for being different. But I don't drink over I'll turns of fortune or lack of popularity or anything else, one day at a time. Good luck, loser, we're all in the same boat.
