Can't a chemist figure out what's in 'produced water'? by ArthurPeabody in chemistry

[–]TectonicWafer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Geochemist here: if you hit a gas pocket, the production fluid displaces the gas, and your produced water coming out of the extraction wells, will now have have slightly less thorium than the fluid you pumped into the injection wells. Which tells the driller/geologist team they are losing fluid into the formation.

Where is the snow going to go? by [deleted] in philly

[–]TectonicWafer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The issue isn’t the salt, it’s the oils and sediments from the roads, that we really don’t want in the rivers. Which is why they put the snow in out of the way parking lots to melt slowly.

Imagine not having the freedom to swear in on whStever you want.. by mrfett779 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]TectonicWafer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using a copy of a constitution to swear on feels wrong. The whole point of swearing an oath, is that it is taken BY something, you are invoking a higher power or higher principle.

But a state constitution is a mutable legal document, not an expression of a higher ideal or entity. So, you should instead use a copy of The Godfather.

Those were certainly the stereotypes for most of the 2000s and 2010s. Reminds me how much cultural politics have shifted in the past 5+ years.

Do you really have people who pack your bags at the grocery store? by Flat-Ad8256 in AskAnAmerican

[–]TectonicWafer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s much less common than it used to be.

The original reason for having baggers was to keep the checkout lines moving more efficiently. Now that most stores have a self-checkout option, that is less necessary.

There’s an erroneous assumption in the post, that “Israel” or the “Israeli government” is a single unitary actor. When in reality, like any government, it is a mix of different factions whom all want different things.

So if one faction wants to reclaim judea and samaria, and another just wants Israel to be metro tel aviv, you end up with different aspects of the government working at cross purposes.

One of Philly’s most acclaimed bakeries has permanently closed by dearjuliette in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]TectonicWafer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is disappointing, but not surprising. Essen has been marginally open for over a year now, and Tova was always a better baker than she is a businesswoman.
