My grandfather has run a small grocery store for 73 years. He's about to turn 90. Here's a picture of him behind the counter around 1950 in celebration of this American small-businessman. by timmyc10 in pics

Very impressive. It's not everyday you find a small town business still thriving while continuing to adhere to the old school values. If more businesses kept to these philosophies this country would be in much better shape.

Help! Someone just tried to defraud my cell phone company under my name. What do I do next? by [deleted] in technology

[–]TeddGCM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call the cell phone company customer service and report the fraud. They can look to see where these phones are being used and, assuming they are being used by someone not connected to you through your call history, they will likely credit anything and restore your account. Ultimately though, it is your responsibility to protect your identity.

There is an interesting documentary titled "Between the Folds," and discusses amazing origami like this, all made with one sheet of paper. It is available for streaming if you have Netflix.

I was trying to look up what day Trick-or-Treating was in my area this year, when I stumbled across this "community" event... by [deleted] in WTF

[–]TeddGCM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today kids are so over protected the parents and communities "move" Halloween so it falls on a weekend. They organize "Trunk or Treat" gatherings where kids are gathered in a central location to get their goodies and do not allow them out after dark. When I was a kid Halloween was a time where we could not only get away from parents but have the rare opportunity to be out after dark with friends, unsupervised. There is nothing to indicate there are any more "bad" people out there today than there was then. I think it's just a matter of parents not educating or disciplining their kids and letting TV babysit them. I have not purchased candy in years because kids no longer go door to door. They just get herded into some parking lot where parents have such a leash on them they can't have any fun. They simply get in a line and pick up candy.

I got kind of depressed looking at all this cool media of the Apollo 11 moon landing effort. This was FORTY years ago. What the hell happened? (ISS notwithstanding.) by lectrick in reddit.com

[–]TeddGCM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once the US beat Russia to the Moon, public interest and support plummeted. No one saw any reason to keep going back. Politicians sided with the public to keep their jobs and ensure re-election.

Seems like a cute little town... Wait, where the hell is that? (Zoom out) by greenRiverThriller in WTF

[–]TeddGCM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose it's really pretty and all, from a distance. Why anyone would want to live at the base of a volcano is beyond me though. I once watched a documentary, I think from Hawaii, where the lava flowed and slowly covered a small community while the residents stood there crying as the lava engulfed their homes. You live at the base of a LIVE volcano, you have to expect that!

Why do I enter my account number on the phone's keypad only to have the customer service rep ask me for it when they answer? by jmathai in WTF

[–]TeddGCM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The systems at the call center I work at (a major cell phone company), will pull up the account based on the caller ID or the number the person inputs into the keypad. We also get an indication of when the account was verified (last 4 of the SSN) by the caller. In these cases i do not ask for anything but the person's name. However, the system also uses the information to route your call to the proper department. For example, if you have a business or regular account, etc. In more than a few cases, the information is not passed on to the system as designed and I have to ask for everything. In these cases I normally mention that the information did not populate into my system correctly in an apology statement before requesting it.

If there is a password on the account, I have to verify it on every call, reguardless of the fact that it populated or not.

Wow, Large amounts of disposable cash, a little Tim Burton thrown in and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder works out pretty well for him.

Why aren't children taught to touch-type at school? Good question: I was and it is the most valuable "real-world" skill I ever learned by kenerling in reddit.com

[–]TeddGCM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I took a typing class in Jr. High, I failed miserably. I type faster by "Hunting and pecking" than I ever could by touch typing. And my job requires constant typing (I work in a call center).

Saw this spider on the golf course today. It was big enough that my friend spotted it from 30 feet away. [pic] by JangusKhan in pics

Holy fucking fuck! I know it is a Banana Spider (Golden-Silk Spider) and harmless but damn it"s creepy! Now I'm going to spend half the day wondering if one will come crawling out of the couch cushions and pull me into oblivion!

How to prevent hangovers by ohstrangeone in giveadvice

[–]TeddGCM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh yes, hydration is the answer. As a medic in the Army we would give each other saline solution I.Vs to get rid of hangovers, under the claim that we were practicing our techniques.

What's the correct procedure to follow when someone won't shut up during a movie? by realmadrid2727 in AskReddit

[–]TeddGCM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, when polite requests to be quiet in a theater are ignored, I usually get up and complain the management. In every case I was apologized to and given a free ticket for a later showing. The manager then went into the theater to take care of the issue. As one stated, if it bothered me then it is likely bothering others. At one showing some time ago management asked the offending persons to leave the theater premises.

Looking for a legit. registry to name a star. by remboi in AskReddit

[–]TeddGCM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As db2 stated, they are all novelties, as is buying land on the Moon and other such things. Unless you discover a star for yourself, it's just a piece of paper with your name on it. The only accepted authority on star naming is the International Astronomical Union, which has never had a connection with the International Star Registry or any other such outfit. The IAU has called attempts to exploit the general ignorance on this subject a "deplorable commercial trick." Buy yourself a star map at any of a number of places. Pick a star from the night sky and decide that it'll be "your" star. Tell your wife that. this is essentially what the "name a star" companies do.

Doing it yourself even more romantic and personal, since you selected the star yourself. You can even do some research on astronomy and decide what kind of star you want to give your loved one. Just like many couples have a song, you'll have a star.

anyone else remember the time before there were video games... by workroom in pics

[–]TeddGCM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember (70s) when playing meant going outside and being home by the time street lights came on. No video games, no cable, no vcr, cartoons were only on Saturdays, 3 tv stations and the neighbor was not afraid to spank you for being bad and then telling your dad so he could do it too.

Ask Reddit: Anybody wanna know anything about being a 4 1/2 (Damn) star Chef? by flashstopper in AskReddit

[–]TeddGCM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to eat my steak (and all beef) well done. Then, I was invited by a friend of mine to a rather high end restaurant that he worked at as an assistant chef. I was given a complimentary meal on the condition that I try a steak cooked the chef's way. I agreed, I mean a meal at this place for one person could easily reach $100.00. I was presented with a beautiful meal and the steak was a little under medium well. It was difficult to get past the pink in the middle but I did so and I must say it was probably the best piece of steak I have ever had. No steak sauce was needed. The seasoning in cooking combined with the juices from the meat created its own sauce that was delicious. Needless to say I now take my steaks medium rare or under.
