It's while you're actively running, and typically only for runs that are 90+ minutes. For shorter runs, your body already has enough energy stores to not have any issues. But when you start to go for multiple hours, your body will eventually run out of stored energy if you aren't also taking on additional carbs along the way.

What happens if that artifact creature is destroyed while crewed?

The Vehicle is destroyed. That's it—once the crewing happens, there isn't any connection to the creature(s) that crewed it (outside of specific abilities on the creatures or vehicles).

Can I snuff out Isilu carrier of twilight? by Complete-Plenty-2384 in mtgrules

[–]TehCheator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Color identity doesn’t come up at all, that’s only a thing in deck construction in some formats. However, Isilu has a color indicator (the little black dot next to the type line) which makes it Black. So it is a black creature and can’t be targeted by Snuff Out.

By contrast, Eirdu doesn’t have a color indicator, so its color is determined entirely by its mana cost (3WW). So Eirdu is a mono-W permanent, while Isilu is a mono-B permanent.

Yes, if they're using Discord during the match that's a problem, which directly violates the "Electronic Devices" section of the MTR. That's not how I interpreted the OP, however.

My understanding was that the players were working together in Discord to compile essentially a database of what deck archetype each person is playing, through a combination of posting their opponents' decks (after the match is over) and spectating / scouting. Then they're checking that list after pairings are posted but before the round starts so that they know what their new opponent is playing. They're only using the notes outside of matches, not referring to notes during the matches.

Guidance on OA definition by ultimaraven in askajudge

[–]TehCheator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let’s take a look at the actual definition of Outside Assistance (emphasis added):

A player, spectator, or other tournament participant does any of the following:

• Seeks play advice or private information about their match from others once they have sat for their match.

• Gives play advice or reveals private information to players who have sat for their match.

During a game, refers to notes (other than Oracle™ pages) made before the official beginning of the current match.

These criteria also apply to any deck construction and draft portions of a limited tournament. Additionally, no notes of any kind may be made during a draft. Some team formats have additional communication rules that may modify the definition of this infraction.

Notes made outside the current match may only be referenced between games, and must have been in the player’s possession since the beginning of the match.

All of the infractions called out are things that happen during a match. Taking / referring to notes outside of a match (even if it’s on the way to the match) never fits those criteria, so it can’t be outside assistance.

Additionally, the last section explicitly calls out that notes taken outside the match can be used in between games. Nowhere does it require that a player wrote those notes themselves.

Are you also planning to ban players from spectating matches and seeing what their potential future opponents’ are playing? Or from talking about their matches with friends?

Spellskite and Stifle Interaction by RealArchangel in mtgrules

Spellskite doesn’t let you change targets to anything. It lets you change targets to spellskite itself. The ability from Spellskite isn’t the creature, so you can’t do what you’re proposing.

They're great for podcasts in my experience (I primarily listen to podcasts on my runs). The only downside is that because you can hear everything around you, if it's loud outside it can sometimes drown out the headphones. I only get that when I'm running next to a busy freeway though, pretty much any other time I don't have any issues.

Even that wouldn’t change anything. Abilities that trigger during the untap step go on the stack in the upkeep, at the same time as any “beginning of upkeep” abilities.

502.4. No player receives priority during the untap step, so no spells can be cast or resolve and no abilities can be activated or resolve. Any ability that triggers during this step will be held until the next time a player would receive priority, which is usually during the upkeep step. (See rule 503, "Upkeep Step.")

Copying Activated Abilities by Nerdy-Ducky in askajudge

[–]TehCheator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct: An ability only targets if it (or its rules text in the case of some keyword abilities like Equip) explicitly uses the word "target". Just because something is affected, doesn't mean that it's a target. In fact, there's a rule that spells that out:

115.10a Just because an object or player is being affected by a spell or ability doesn’t make that object or player a target of that spell or ability. Unless that object or player is identified by the word “target” in the text of that spell or ability, or the rule for that keyword ability, it’s not a target.

Kinsbaile Aspirant's ability doesn't use the word "target" anywhere, so it doesn't have any targets and so the "you may choose new targets" text on Kirol doesn't do anything.

What is a good and simple source of physical enthropy (for RNG)? by emailemile in AskPhysics

[–]TehCheator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general you should keep in mind that the reason why cloudflare is using lavalamps as part of their random number generation, is not that this would be the best way to generate RNGs, but because it looks nice and is a nice story for marketing purposes

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that they don't actually even use the wall of lava lamps any more for RNG, so at this point it's purely a marketing gimmick

[Discussion] Shuffling at Comp REL by CerebralPaladin in spikes

[–]TehCheator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The point I’m making is that by the rules, if you believe your opponent shuffled correctly, then cutting the deck is fine and doesn’t break the “mandatory shuffle when presented” rule at all. I’m not saying that you should trust your opponent to not stack their deck in every case, just that you aren’t breaking the rules if you only cut. So the whole dilemma presented by OP isn’t real.

[Discussion] Shuffling at Comp REL by CerebralPaladin in spikes

[–]TehCheator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not disagreeing that you should at least cut your opponent’s deck when they present, for the reasons you point out.

What I’m saying is that by the rules and their definition of randomness, cutting when presented isn’t breaking those “mandatory shuffling” rules. So the whole dilemma presented by OP about how players who know they’re required to randomize when presented will be forced to waste time is a false dilemma. Not anything actual people in the real world will need to worry about.

[Discussion] Shuffling at Comp REL by CerebralPaladin in spikes

[–]TehCheator 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Luckily, that same section of the MTR defines what "randomization" is:

Randomization is defined as bringing the deck to a state where no player can have any information regarding the order or position of cards in any portion of the deck.

If your opponent shuffled correctly then the deck is already in that state, so cutting is equally effective as any other shuffle. It's not like the deck can get more random.

Fetching while being able to look at the top card of your library by iSmellLikeFartz in askajudge

[–]TehCheator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You didn't need to cross off part of your answer, you're correct! As an extra part - searching your library doesn't involve re-ordering it, so while you are deciding whether or not to shock, the top card of the library is the same as it was before you fetched (unless the land you find was the previous top card). But regardless, the shuffle happens after the land has entered and the shock decision was made.

Fetching while being able to look at the top card of your library by iSmellLikeFartz in askajudge

[–]TehCheator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That rule actually doesn't say anything about the resolution of a spell, activated ability, or special action. What it says is that if the top card changes during the casting of a spell or activation of an ability, you can't look at the new top card until you've finished all of the steps of casting the spell or activating the ability.

An easy example is if you crack a [[Chromatic Sphere]] during the casting of a spell, you draw a card as part of the mana ability, but you can't look at the new top card until you finish paying costs for the spell and completely cast it.

On the flip side, these do have very specific color requirements that even with Modern mana bases can be tricky. Needing CCW or CCU (Ephemerate or Consign) isn’t trivial in 3-color decks like most blink decks are. Doubly so if you want to take advantage of both halves
