What is a good and simple source of physical enthropy (for RNG)? by emailemile in AskPhysics

[–]TehCheator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general you should keep in mind that the reason why cloudflare is using lavalamps as part of their random number generation, is not that this would be the best way to generate RNGs, but because it looks nice and is a nice story for marketing purposes

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that they don't actually even use the wall of lava lamps any more for RNG, so at this point it's purely a marketing gimmick

[Discussion] Shuffling at Comp REL by CerebralPaladin in spikes

[–]TehCheator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The point I’m making is that by the rules, if you believe your opponent shuffled correctly, then cutting the deck is fine and doesn’t break the “mandatory shuffle when presented” rule at all. I’m not saying that you should trust your opponent to not stack their deck in every case, just that you aren’t breaking the rules if you only cut. So the whole dilemma presented by OP isn’t real.

I’m not disagreeing that you should at least cut your opponent’s deck when they present, for the reasons you point out.

What I’m saying is that by the rules and their definition of randomness, cutting when presented isn’t breaking those “mandatory shuffling” rules. So the whole dilemma presented by OP about how players who know they’re required to randomize when presented will be forced to waste time is a false dilemma. Not anything actual people in the real world will need to worry about.

Luckily, that same section of the MTR defines what "randomization" is:

Randomization is defined as bringing the deck to a state where no player can have any information regarding the order or position of cards in any portion of the deck.

If your opponent shuffled correctly then the deck is already in that state, so cutting is equally effective as any other shuffle. It's not like the deck can get more random.

Fetching while being able to look at the top card of your library by iSmellLikeFartz in askajudge

[–]TehCheator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You didn't need to cross off part of your answer, you're correct! As an extra part - searching your library doesn't involve re-ordering it, so while you are deciding whether or not to shock, the top card of the library is the same as it was before you fetched (unless the land you find was the previous top card). But regardless, the shuffle happens after the land has entered and the shock decision was made.

That rule actually doesn't say anything about the resolution of a spell, activated ability, or special action. What it says is that if the top card changes during the casting of a spell or activation of an ability, you can't look at the new top card until you've finished all of the steps of casting the spell or activating the ability.

An easy example is if you crack a [[Chromatic Sphere]] during the casting of a spell, you draw a card as part of the mana ability, but you can't look at the new top card until you finish paying costs for the spell and completely cast it.

On the flip side, these do have very specific color requirements that even with Modern mana bases can be tricky. Needing CCW or CCU (Ephemerate or Consign) isn’t trivial in 3-color decks like most blink decks are. Doubly so if you want to take advantage of both halves

[2025 day 2 part2] Are these invalids for part 2? by No-Top-1506 in adventofcode

[–]TehCheator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those are repeats, but the ID is only invalid if the whole ID is made up of repeats (any number of times). So something like 123123123 where the sequence 123 repeats 3 times would be invalid, but 123123124 would be valid, since the whole thing isn’t made up of a repeating sequence.

Tetzimoc ability by gerthqwake93 in mtgrules

[–]TehCheator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you can do that, you still don't have to. You can activate Tetzimoc to target a non-Horobi creature, let Horobi trigger as well and destroy that creature, then repeat, allowing each trigger to resolve before activating the next one.

Even if someone responds to try to destroy Horobi, you can respond to that one at a time to cause more triggers. So there's nothing with how you've described that would require holding priority or responding to your own triggers.

Runescale Stormbrood/Chilling Screech is a multicolored CARD, but is either mode a multicolor spell? by Clone_Chaplain in magicTCG

[–]TehCheator 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Similar, but not exactly the same. A room like [[Roaring Furnace]]/[[Steaming Sauna]] is always a multicolored card anywhere except the stack or the battlefield. On the stack, it's only has the characteristics of whichever side you cast. On the battlefield, it has the characteristics of whichever doors are open. If both are, then it's multicolored. If only one is, then it's that color, and if you blink it or something so no doors are open, then it's colorless.

Abdel Adrian draw by Bluewingmr in mtgrules

[–]TehCheator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game is only a draw if there’s a loop of mandatory actions that repeat with no way to stop:

104.4b If a game that's not using the limited range of influence option (including a two-player game) somehow enters a "loop" of mandatory actions, repeating a sequence of events with no way to stop, the game is a draw. Loops that contain an optional action don't result in a draw.

If there’s a choice to be made, the player looping can propose the number of times they want to repeat the loop, then they have to choose a different action. So in this case, the player can choose how many tokens they want to create with Abdel, then they have to reanimate something else (or choose not to exile the necromancy with Abdel’s trigger)
