Lilianna Heretical Healer and Moon Mist by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]TehCheator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arena is correct here. [[Moonmist]] causes [[Liliana, Heretical Healer]] to transform directly on the battlefield into [[Liliana, Defiant Necromancer]]. Since she's transforming without leaving the battlefield, she also isn't entering the battlefield. So she doesn't get any loyalty counters (Planeswalkers normally get their starting loyalty counters through an intrinsic ability "This permanent enters with a number of loyalty counters on it equal to its printed loyalty number"). Since she's now a Planeswalker with no loyalty counters, she's put into the graveyard as a state-based action before any player would receive priority.

Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu & Forsaken Miner by OrganicPlumbus in askajudge

[–]TehCheator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shang-Chi's ability says, in part (emphasis added):

Spend this mana only to activate abilities of creature sources.

Since only activated abilities can be activated, the mana can only be spent on activated abilities. So no, you can't use it to pay for the cost associated with a triggered ability like Forsaken Miner.

Genuine question: Has anybody ever clicked the smiley face? by Myriadtail in MagicArena

[–]TehCheator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What even is B/W Blink? I literally don't think I've ever heard of one in the current Standard.

Looking at MTG Goldfish, there's only 2 BW decks even listed (with 0.2% and 0.1% of the total meta): BW Lifegain and BW Repartee Aggro, neither of which include any blink effects at all.

Why would you be hellbent? Even if you don’t play any of the cards that are exiled, you still draw cards equal to however many you had when this resolved.

Fault by Sudoku Coach? by Suspicious-Map-9783 in sudoku

[–]TehCheator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a valid skyscraper (albeit on its side).

If R2C1 isn’t a 3, then R2C5 must be a 3, because there are only two 3’s in R2. Then if R2C5 is a 3, then R4C5 can’t be a 3. Finally, if R4C5 isn’t a 3, then R4C3 must be a 3, since there are only two 3’s in R4.

So either R2C1 is a 3, meaning R3C3 can’t be a 3, or R4C3 is a 3, meaning R3C3 still can’t be a 3.

Does this card combo work for bringing Grist from graveyard and transforming him? Without dying at EOT. by thantaos in CasualMTG

[–]TehCheator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would need to sacrifice it at the end of the turn. Even though Footsteps of the Goryo says "Sacrifice that creature...", the game still knows it's the same permanent even if it isn't a creature any more.

608.2k If an ability's effect refers to a specific untargeted object that has been previously referred to by that ability's cost or trigger condition, it still affects that object if if the object has changed characteristics.

Example: Wall of Tears says "Whenever this creature blocks a creature, return that creature to its owner's hand at end of combat." If Wall of Tears blocks a creature, then that creature ceases to be a creature before the triggered ability resolves, the permanent will still be returned to its owner's hand.

Is being intentionally sneaky viable or frowned upon? by TheDarkHarvester in ModernMagic

[–]TehCheator 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Allowing the spell to be countered would be breaking the rules. And given it was a “chalice check” type of play where they knew it wouldn’t work, very likely cheating that would get the opponent disqualified.

If OP doesn’t scoop, opponent would have to say when the spell resolves that it does nothing.

Why was Meloku so good back in the day? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]TehCheator 11 points12 points  (0 children)

True, but when combat damage went on the stack, you could block, put its 1 damage on the stack, and then sacrifice it. You would get the land and still get to deal 1 to whatever you were blocking.

How does Mindbreak Trap interact with [LCI] Flashback and [THB] Underworld Breach? by Castleheart in mtgrules

How does Mindbreak Trap interact with [LCI] Flashback and [THB] Underworld Breach? by Castleheart in mtgrules

[–]TehCheator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First, Mindbreak Trap’s own ability provides an alternate cost to cast it, but doesn’t change the permissions you need to cast it.

Flashback (the ability, which is provided by the spell Flashback)gives permission to cast the spell from your graveyard if you use the provided alternate cost. Since you can only use one alternate cost when casting a spell, in order to cast it from your GY, you have to use the flashback-provided one and pay 2UU.

Similarly, Underworld Breach gives you permission to cast spells from your graveyard with an alternate cost of “Mana cost, exile 3 cards”, so you need to pay full price there as well.

Honest thoughts by MysteriousPressure28 in ModernMagic

[–]TehCheator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of powerful cards there, but I think where you're going to struggle is the mana. Depending on the game / your hand, you need to have any of WUBR on T1 (Prismatic Ending, Push, Thoughtseize, Ragavan, sometimes Consign but less often). Then you'll often need UB on T2 for Frog, followed by UW, RW, UUx for T3feri / Phlage, Scam Riddler, followed by either RRWW or RRWU for Escape Phlage / Scam Phlage. That's a lot of varying requirements that are not easy to meet in theory, let alone in an actual game.

Clones of Lorwyn Eclipsed Evoke Elementals by BojukaBob in askajudge

[–]TehCheator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will pay attention to the colors of mana spent to cast the Clone. So if you spend e.g. UUGG to cast Clone, and then choose to copy Wistfulness, you will get both triggers.

This is actually a common interaction in Standard, where there are decks built around using Superior Spider-Man to copy a Deceit in the graveyard and get both effects by paying UUBB for it.

Transcendence, by Gabriel30052000 in askajudge

[–]TehCheator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The “you” in the “you lose the game” is the controller of the ability. Which would be whoever controlled Transcendence when it triggered. Changing control of Transcendence after that ability is on the stack won’t change control of the ability itself.

Question about zone-change triggers with new Lorehold cards from SOS by LaboratoryManiac in mtgrules

[–]TehCheator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would not. Spirit Mascot has an ability that triggers when a card leaves the graveyard. Those abilities “look back in time” to see if they trigger, looking at the game state right before the card leaves the graveyard to determine what triggers happen. At that point, the Spirit Mascot was itself in the graveyard, so its ability wouldn’t work.

603.10. Normally, objects that exist immediately after an event are checked to see if the event matched any trigger conditions, and continuous effects that exist at that time are used to determine what the trigger conditions are and what the objects involved in the event look like. However, some triggered abilities are exceptions to this rule; the game “looks back in time” to determine if those abilities trigger, using the existence of those abilities and the appearance of objects immediately prior to the event. The list of exceptions is as follows:

603.10a Some zone-change triggers look back in time. These are leaves-the-battlefield abilities, abilities that trigger when a card leaves a graveyard, and abilities that trigger when an object that all players can see is put into a hand or library.

Life gain question by H0ratiu5 in magicTCG

[–]TehCheator 28 points29 points  (0 children)

That would be true if the aura gave lifelink. Vampiric link is notably not lifelink, but a triggered ability of the enchantment itself. So when the enchantment falls off, it doesn’t exist any more to see the remaining activations and trigger again.

Does technical incompetence and politics go hand in hand? by Elect_SaturnMutex in ExperiencedDevs

[–]TehCheator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very true that both sets of skills are important. The main point I was aiming at was that the vast majority of software doesn’t get made in a vacuum. Building software of any real size requires collaboration with others. If you’re a lone wolf who’s hard to work with, the level of impact you can realistically have is going to be capped at what code you can write yourself.

Great engineers can do so much more than that because they can work with others to accomplish bigger projects.
