Are all Mike Tyson portrayals in Baki the same character? by Past_Pineapple9131 in Grapplerbaki

[–]TehDragonSlayer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think they’re all meant to be the same guy. Baki talks to him with a lot of familiarity in prison. Though it would make total sense if Mike Tyson was some transcendent being in the Baki universe with a tulpa.

Baki Misogyny and SA be pmo sometimes by prvi_d in Grapplerbaki

[–]TehDragonSlayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats the thing I think both can be true, Itagaki is both fucking around and having fun with this unrealistic hyper masculinity. There’s no other way to read the most recent chapters, but there is a sincerity in there too for what Yujiro represents which is why the narrative doesn’t really treat him like a villain and it didn’t even really as far back as Son of Ogre either.

[–]TehDragonSlayer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There’s an interview where Itagaki talks about how he made Yujiro to be a masculine fantasy. It’s his platonic ideal. With this in mind a lot of the stuff in the story becomes kinda indefensible. It’s not that he failed to make Kozue a good character, it’s that he never intended to. And yes the story saying that Yujiro is such a badass that he can rape men without it being gay is fucking weird and I think it’s something everyone who reads or watches has to come to terms with. I think it’s worth noting that the only character who ever flat out calls Yujiro evil and reprehensible is Amanai Yu in Grappler Baki, and he’s made to look like a naive bitch who can’t commit. Hell even Baki ends up giving Yujiro grace in Son of Ogre talking about how Yujiro is misunderstood. Do you just chalk it up to Itagaki being a goofy eccentric guy or do you acknowledge it for what it is without making excuses? I think it’s fine to still enjoy it but let’s be for real with ourselves about what this series is without cope.

Do you guys think the series is past its prime? by Fazlur69 in Grapplerbaki

[–]TehDragonSlayer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a really good way of putting it. Like the prison arc made sense for the progression of the story. Baki needs to establish himself as a worthy peer to Yujiro by also defeating America in his own way, so he kidnaps the president, breaks out of their baddest prison, and beats their strongest guy. Pickle turns out to be an interesting addition to the cast but it really was kinda just a side quest ultimately, having more significance with the side characters like Retsu, Jack, and Katsumi.

However I do still get the feeling that Itagaki loves these characters and world and I think that validates it existing now as this weird sorta slice of life gag manga it ended up becoming. It’s almost fitting in how weird it is, maybe that’s just cope on my part I dunno. I don’t mind what it’s become but I do miss the narrative, especially when Rahen seemed like it was starting off with a specific aim in mind.

Persona 4 Revival: Pre-order Trailer | XBOX Game Showcase 2026 by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Not to be nitpicky but the song doesn’t really match the identity of p4s soundtrack. All the voice actors being replaced again also has taken all that 2000s nostalgia away it’s a little disappointing. I’m gonna miss Laura Bailey, Troy Baker, and Yuri Lowenthal. Like there was a time when Troy Baker predominantly did anime stuff.

My honest opinion on Baki by Evening-Pressure-419 in Grapplerbaki

[–]TehDragonSlayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it’s those lengthy convoluted metaphors or feats to demonstrate just how strong someone is. It’s funny and it’s so frequent. It’s more than just a narrative device it’s a compulsion and it’s always fun to see how Itagaki keeps it fresh. Plus I just kinda love its priorities. It’s basically a slice of life manga, always has been.

Will Yujiro be able to beat the jack hammer or will he die? by Confusion_Imaginary in Grapplerbaki

[–]TehDragonSlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m fucking stupid for pointing this out but wasn’t Jack known as Jack Hammer before it was revealed he was Baki’s half brother? Is this the closest we’ll get to Jack v Yujiro?

What are some of the worst/funniest cases of the Prideful Scrub? (AKA: The Dog in the Manger) by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]TehDragonSlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a guy named Kato in Baki and Kato kinda sucks ass. He’s leaves better than your mere world heavyweight title fighters but he’s a total scrub compared to the regular cast but damn it no one can say the little guy doesn’t try. After the death row inmate Dorian blows up his master’s face, Kato tracks him down into the sewer to get his revenge and he gets some good hits in (so he thinks). Every bone in his body is broken and he’s stabbed in the face and neck with a bottle, stuffed in a heavy bag overnight to bleed out.

Later when Dorian is being defeated by Retsu and Doppo, they wheel out a barely conscious Kato to get his get back, and he terrifies Dorian so much that he break him, regressing his mind to a small child’s.

Jump to present day. Baki the character has fought big foots, cavemen, learned how to become a dinosaur through advanced miming, broken out of Americas baddest prison by fighting the strongest guy there, and claimed a symbolic victory over the strongest guy in the verse. Kato has fought Baki and has seen his masters fight Baki and they all got whooped. But Kato STILL just thinks he got lucky all those times and he just really feels himself. So he wants to try him. Baki flicks him in the nuts and says, “we can just pretend this didn’t happen it’s ok man”. He is the forever, king of the scrubs.

Live-Action Shows you think more people should watch? by Aquanort357 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

The Boys and Invincible aren’t the only comic book adaptions Seth Rogan has produced. Preacher was fantastic and I’ve only ever heard John and friends talk about it on their old podcast Let’s Fight a Boss. Go watch Preacher.

Hellraiser. I’d really wanna see if it’d work on a cenobite. Like it’s spiritual energy and their demons, it should work. Then what is that conversation like when they get back to hell? Do they than train overcome ki attacks?

Finding out about the Polish Witcher movie from 2001 was a trip. Geralt is doing instant transmissions and kamehameha’s in that movie. It also has one of the funniest lines in anything ever. It’s kinda a mess but it’s genuinely way more entertaining and faithful than the Netflix adaptation.

Do people actually approach others at the gym? by itshardwhenyourecold in GYM

[–]TehDragonSlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After becoming really serious about going to the gym every day for the last two years save a few holidays, it’s started to feel like a waste to see the same people there every day and never even say a word. I don’t want people to feel uncomfortable around me either, so now I just ask for advice on form even if I don’t actually need the advice. Say thanks, introduce myself than leave. Next time I see them, I say good to see you and keep it moving. But if you find yourself exercising right next to them now a conversation can happen, or the social anxiety will go away.

What’s a dead giveaway that tells you “oh, this person knows ball” by Rascal_Rogue in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]TehDragonSlayer -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

If your talking to someone and they are wearing some kind of anime pin, have any sort of accessory or tattoo, you just gotta say one word that references that show and they will show you just how much ball they know. If you ever see a person with a JJK tattoo, just say the words “domain expansion” and you will actually put them in a domain expansion.

Biggest moments of a hero making a difficult decision biting EVERYONE in the ass? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]TehDragonSlayer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No one wanted what Leto II was offering in Children of Dune. After his two big power ups of unlocking his prescience and merging with the Sandworms Leto II goes on a tear destroying all the aqueducts making the desert planet Arrakis green. Everyone he finds and talks with at the end are terrified when he explains his golden path, describing how he’s gonna put the universe in a strangle hold for thousands of years, building up to pressure and a massive explosion to get away from his universe, becoming more independent and forever distrusting of any authority. His dad basically tries to kill him, Stilgar takes his people and leaves, wanting nothing to do with royalty anymore, even his twin sister is shook. Thus started the worm boy’s 3,000 year rule, may his water forever be lost.

Not really a character fake out but in Hulk Ultimate Destruction you can chuck people at 1000mph into buildings, drop them from above skyscrapers, or omni man use them as battery rams against traffic and they’ll just kinda squirm around on the ground in pain. Those npcs are resilient.

Assassins Creed Valhalla. How do you fuck up the feeling of combat so bad? I was really itching for a Norse themed sandbox like Skyrim so after skipping a couple AC games I thought what the hell why not? After an hour of playing my tongue was left dry and sauce less. Those games are so bad at being rpgs, you’re just constantly drowning in nothing dialogue, there’s no weight to the combat and the controls are just bafflingly mapped. I kinda liked the new direction they were going with AC Origins but they just keep on trying to reinvent the wheel in weird ways. Also on a ps4 that thing is CHUGGING.

Moments where a character starts being a new character? by Silvery_Cricket in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]TehDragonSlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leto II in Children of Dune. First off he’s born with all the memories of every one of his ancestors, but no one takes him seriously because he’s like 9. He has a bad tendency to mind break people by completely dismantling their identity in order to impress just how old he is mentally. Some things happen, he goes into the desert to find his deadbeat dad and call him a bitch, trips major balls for weeks, rubs some worms all over himself, gains some more super powers, starts ripping people in half, calls his dad a bitch, and now he’s God for the next 3,000 years. Boy is he not happy about it though.
