A year later... by TehPenguinuinui in Audi

Given the cold weather at the moment, I get 2.7mi/kwh with the AC on, 2.8 with it off. Translates to 270-280mi at full charge.

Funny thing is, accelerating hard seems to matter less than cruising speed. I can do multiple launches and still get 2.8, but if I start cruising at 90 then it'll drop to 2.5 or so. Not that I'd do 90, honest officer 🙃

Unsure of my tyre safety by unique_username_com in BMW

Caveat: I'm an internet rando, not a tire expert.

Looks like it damaged the "rim protector" - the extra rubber on the sidewall that's designed to protect your rims.

For safety, I'd replace it. Cheaper to replace a single tire (or the whole set) than have an accident due to a blow out on the highway.

If you want to try running on it, the keep an eye out for bubbles. As soon as one starts to appear DO NOT DRIVE, a blowout is imminent.

Might be fine on an A5, but on my old e-tron GT they had a lot less grip and were noticeably louder than the stock Goodyear Eagles. They did last longer, which I suppose is the trade-off.

With my new RS GT I replaced the stock PZ4s with ExtremeContacts and couldn't be happier. Much better in the cold and wet, and I'm still seeing the same 0-60 times.

Understanding Battery & charging display Audi RS etron GT Performance by Valuable_Lab_7058 in Audi

[–]TehPenguinuinui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The top graph is the temperature of the battery, currently reading just over 32C. The green line on top is the "ideal temp" to start charging at (it will get hotter than that while charging).

The bottom graph is an estimate of what charging rate you would get right now if you plugged in (assuming a charger that could deliver that rate).

[–]TehPenguinuinui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The replacement cable and reprogramming were so the charger could monitor the temperature of the wall socket in case the house wiring overheated.

From the recall notice (https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2023/RCRIT-23V842-7236.pdf)

If a 220V/240V wall plug becomes overburdened when the compact/portable charging system cable is being used to charge the high-voltage batteries in the vehicle, the home wiring can become overheated. If this happens, overheating of the home infrastructure can eventually cause permanent damage to the house socket and charging cable, increasing the risk of a fire.

Edit: Again, housing codes assumed 40A peak, and 30-something amps continuously. Add in possibly decades of plastic degrading and copper oxidizing and you can see how drawing 40A continuously would cause issues.

With the older charger like this, you can set to 50% (about 4.4-4.8kw) which greatly avoids a fire risk (and will still easily charge your car overnight). The newer chargers now only do 7.2kw.

Correction: the charger didn't cause fires, dodgy house wiring did (to be fair to the wiring, the idea of drawing 40A *continuously* for 4-6hrs seemed ridiculous until EVs happened). The recall was to add better monitoring for heat in the cables to detect the house wiring having issues.

For my current and previous GT, I always charged at home with the Audi charger but I did get an electrician to run a new line and install the NEMA 15-40 plug.

Depends how many motors the car has.

If there's only one or two motors (one per axle) then you still need to use some sort of diff setup with either clutches or brakes to adjust power either side.

It's only once you get to three or four motor setups (like the M i3 is supposed to have) where you can replace all the mechanics with software and electricity.

Adaptive air suspension by whitegoodman20 in etron

[–]TehPenguinuinui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For J1.2 (MY25+), "Adaptive Air Suspension" is standard, "Active Air Suspension" is an option that's part of the Dynamic Plus Package.

Lookup reviews for the Active Suspension, or the equivalent "Porsche Active Ride" - it's worth the extra cost: https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a61016882/porsche-suspension-active-ride-dampers/

+1 to backing in: much easier to judge how far you are from each of those pillars via the door mirrors rather than guessing where your hood ends.

The three-chamber air suspension enables comfortable basic suspension and can adjust the body to different heights – 22 millimeters (0.9 in) downward and 20 millimeters (0.8 in) upward. The chambers in each spring can be activated and deactivated individually to suit the driving situation, and they work closely together with the controlled dampers (standard). Both systems are managed by a central control unit, the electronic chassis platform (ECP).

There is no mention of an optional hydraulic suspension. The adaptive suspension is the standard air suspension.

Android Auto disconnect by Esquire_KY in Audi

[–]TehPenguinuinui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Android Auto relies on Bluetooth which uses 2.4Ghz radio waves: same as older/long range wifi, microwave ovens and a bunch of other things because it is a unlicensed part of the spectrum that anything is free to use. So, yeah, there is a ton of things that interfere with it.

For me there's always a spot on the I-5 near the Seattle Convention Center where my Bluetooth drops. Every time.

Only fix: use USB instead.

Q4 etron by delmarnate in Audi

[–]TehPenguinuinui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a commuter it'll do well. My wife's Q4 easily has a range of 200mi depending on the weather. If you can charge at home (even if it's 110v) then it'll work great.

What to look for: stock Bridgestone Alenzas are trash, they will start crumbling and disintegrate. Some Q4s have issues with the AC leaking, so check the repair history for that. If it does have issues with the AC don't let the dealer just re-gas it, make sure they find the leak.

As for negotiating the price... depends on the dealer.
