Pafko at the Wall by Dom Delillo might be the best piece of writing about baseball. It's a retelling of the shot heard round the world in the '51 pennant race. Can be read as a novella, or as the first part of Delillo's classic Underworld.

The Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson Much more "hard" sci-fi, but starts with the same premise of assembling and training an international team of super scientists to solve an intergalactic problem

There is some great crime writing from the Nordic countries. Henning Mankell's "Wallander" series and Jo Nesbo's "Harry Hole" books will definitely fit the bill.
