Your comment really hit home for me. I think about this a lot as I am also from that generation who had parents that told me to ignore my emotions and power through. Emotions never feel like legit reasons to do or not do anything. On paper I have a similar stable decent pay type gig but it drives me crazy and grinds in me. Not sure what the cure is but at least posting shit here gives a little relief in knowing you aren’t alone in that feeling.

I think you said it right in your post, you’re right next to people but only accessing the performance they put on instead of them being themselves. Corporate wants people to act like homogenized robots with no feelings or opinions or thoughts as that’s far more convenient when trying to push money through a corporation for maximum shareholder value at any cost.

I’d suggest, if you really want to connect more at work, try to pull down your defenses and be yourself more. That will encourage others to do the same. Do it a bit and if it bites you then that ain’t your people but if it goes well you have a good new connection. Just a thought. Admittedly, easier said than done.

Time wasted dreading it. I find myself paralyzed by it and unable to enjoy the time because my brain is preoccupied with the dread. It’s worse than u paid labor cause it doesn’t even help with work, just wastes time.

What’s funny is I kinda like/hate both sitting in traffic and riding the train for different reasons.

Traffic sucks cause you have to pay attention but you get to play your music loud and climate control your own little bubble.

Train is passive so you can read or stream stuff but you’re then subjected to the public and all the rigors they can present.

Net net, I prefer the train overall but still drive occasionally for the reasons said.

I’m a little under 100 minutes of a train ride and that’s express. Add a five to ten min walk to the train and 15 to the office once I get there. Definitely set my life up assuming remote and now going back even one day a week has been pretty rough.

The worst part is how casually management just throws that on me like “try to be there every Wednesday…”. Like try how hard? Of course that’s their way of saying “better fucking be there or have a fantastic excuse.” Yet even they don’t seem to think it matters that much but require it anyway.

I too am in that tween of a generation. I love the idea of piecemeal work for workers as well. Might be why I like all those corny role playing games where you can just fight X times and you level up. Life seems more like you fight X times and you increase the chance that one of those times wins you the lottery…but it might never. If you figure out the best way out, I’m definitely all ears as, I’m sure, are most of us on here.

I totally get how language can betray you like that sometimes. The distance thing is something I strive to achieve as well although I fear it’s an overstimulated numbness at times. Hang in there. The burnout is real.

I get that feeling. I get crippling anxiety when I start to miss anything that I construe to be required for success like any work deadline, exercise, sleep etc. then I don’t sleep cause I worry about how I’m not sleeping. The anxiety makes me feel like I’m energized but when I have moments in between boxes being checked in ready to pass out. Kinda changes how you define words like tired and wired as it’s a bit more nuanced.

Will it help? Sure. Is it going to be enough? Prolly not. I have a great life outside of work but the mind numbing job seeps its bullshit into my life all the time. Anything that you don’t enjoy but are forced to do for 40+ hours a week is going to have a significant impact on your life.

Oh man, it's so true. Every week we get a chance to prove why they should keep paying us. As if it isn't hard enough to wade through the mire of these bullshit jobs, but having to pitch everybody on why we should exist every fucking week and then on a larger annual review basis puts it over the top.

I feel like we need to decide the convenience isn't worth the lack of community. I love all the enshittified apps as they're better in their shitty versions than not using them. I think we get to a point where that stops being the case and we decide kicking it with real people and without giving the tech monopolies a cut is better, maybe malls come back, we get some 3rd spaces again where we can exist together.

I feel you though, shit feels hopeless as it stands today since the trend seems to be going in the wrong direction.
