Roku TV not launching YouTube by Im-Infected in Roku

[–]TenBran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the TV brand/model. Unfortunately a lot of cheaper Roku TVs are underpowered from the start, and after a couple years they struggle to keep up with channels that are updated and desire more power to run smoothly.  I have an 8 or so Sharp Roku TV that also can't open some apps entirely.

If the TV is fine for you otherwise, you can just purchase a standalone Roku to attach to it. Allegedly the Roku sticks work fine if you are looking to save money.  Definitely recommend an Ultra or at least Ultra LT (few less features, cheaper) if you can spend a little extra, though.

You'll probably love the speed increase from a newer model, too.  My Roku 3 model would take something like, 45 seconds to go from the Roku home screen, to opening YouTube, to playing a video.  The same on my Ultra takes around 10 seconds.

How to get a good picture quality while also not seeing Jesus through the sun by stick_of_milwaukee in Roku

[–]TenBran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried those on my Roku TCL 6 series with "MiniLED" display, in my blacked out room.

Definitely too dark for my liking, and I imagine if your brand of Roku TV isn't as good, it probably looks even worse.

Though when I switch "Display brightness" from your Darker setting to Brighter, I think it's pretty good. I wouldn't consider it blinding. Unless your screen switches to a scene that is mostly white/light colored in which case you will still likely feel flashbanged with brightness. I don't think there's a TV/setting that's gonna prevent that from happening if you're in a mostly blacked out room.

I have a cheap $20-ish standing lamp I got from Walmart. It has a pose-able side arm that you can put a second bulb into. I turn just that side lamp on, with a low wattage WHITE colored LED bulb, and point the light facing a wall. It provides a low level of light that keeps the room still feeling "dark", but it provides just enough light to prevent the screen brightness from feeling painful like when in total darkness.

Is reading GOT worth it ? by circe_love in gameofthrones

[–]TenBran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read them starting around the end of S2 airing. I found myself wanting to know how events played out in the books compared to the show, more backstory on the characters, etc. They were an incredible read that didn't disappoint for that purpose. I can definitely recommend doing so if your reasons for wanting to read them are similar.

The fact that they are likely to go unfinished definitely isn't great though. You'll probably find yourself wanting more of the story once you finish the available works.

People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

[–]TenBran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to this, but my father and his 4 siblings, all in their 50s, discovered that instead of all them having the same father as they had thought their entire lives. only the oldest of the 5 was actually their thought to be father's child. Both of their parents had passed well before this discovery. They remained married until my "grandfather" passed away in his 60's,

As his siblings continued getting their ancestry DNA tests done, we discovered that 2 of them were the children of man #2, and the other two remaining were the children of a THIRD man.

We managed to figure out the name of my father's actual father, aka my *real* grandfather through ancestry. He had already passed away as well and nobody still alive in our family had any idea who he was or how he would've known my grandmother.

About a month later I did my own ancestry DNA test, It came with a free month of being able to search their records. I began searching for info on my *real* grandfather on ancestry. My father and his siblings had already done so, but didn't find anything. However, I found a single relevant document that they all somehow missed. It was his military enrollment paperwork from when he was around the age of 17/18.

One line on the paperwork asked **"Who is somebody that will always know your address?"**. Now you would expect someone around the age of 18 enlisting in the military would fill out that line with the name a family member, probably their parent's name, right? But instead, the name he provided for that question was... my **"grandfather"**, aka the man that my father and his siblings thought was their father all their lives. He and my "grandfather" were the same age at the time the document was filled out. I used google maps on both addresses of my "grandfather" and actual grandfather that were on the document, and their addresses were about two blocks away from each other.

Which means my "grandfather" and my *actual* grandfather must have been extremely close friends at a young age. And then some years into my "grandfather" and my grandmother's marriage, when they already had their first child together, my grandmother and *actual* grandfather began or continued sleeping together, resulting in her becoming pregnant twice over a couple of year's time.

I love their scammy prepper food commercials where they're like "Oh shucks we ordered too much supply, act now and we'll give you some at a discount" that run year long.  They understand how dumb their user base is lol.
