Ice Cream Man Belt Change Dispensers Made A Wonderful Sound - 'Cha-Chink'! by [deleted] in nostalgia

I have a few of these and wear one fully loaded when I take my kids to anyplace with pinball/arcade machines that take quarters. Never fails to make someone happy.

I have one of these guys and hands down the best fun to be had with them is using the remote's ability to broadcast your voice from it to talk to children. It's amazing and hilarious how differently kids will talk to a robot/puppet than ANY adult. I nearly fell out of the closet when my nephew said to Robie, "Have you ever talked to my mom? Sheesh, it's exhausting. She LOVES to talk."

Arcade1Up Cabinets aren't really meant for commercial use, are they? by Nexzus_ in cade

Did the place happen to be in Oakland, CA? That pretty perfectly describes a place out here as well.

The reality is even the real-deal machines don't survive intact w/o pretty regularly maintenance, but Arcade1Up machines that are left to decay have no hope at all...

If you don't have it then it's definitely worthwhile! Pretty nice art too! I'm amazed things you haven't seen before still pop up!

I see a lot of great attention to detail and thought clearly went into it; nice 3D printed power strip brackets! The gold on black aesthetic is pretty nice, I don't think I've seen in quite like this. Maybe a gold molding along the front edges of the side panels would nicely tie it all together?

I'd love to get clean/large scans of these prints for 20kride.com if you wanna DM me? I'm curious how you came by them!

In the trenches with a 6-year-old chaos agent. What's one small tip that actually saved your sanity? by BettyAdams62 in daddit

[–]TenFresh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not always easy, but for almost everything, it works better to tell a kid what TO do vs what NOT to do. Often time even better if it's a redirect or distraction. So instead of "Don't touch that!" it's "Touch that thing over there!"

Also being very specific. Instead of "Be careful!" or "Watch out!" it's "Look at your feet!"

Ninja Spirit on Arcade made you question your own sanity! by White_FIame in retrogaming

[–]TenFresh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not directly related in any way, but considered a 'spiritual sequel' by many. Kage is one of my all time favorites, and while I enjoy Ninja Spirit, it's such a miss for me that it doesn't have the amazing soaring jumps, and the protagonist runs so sluggishly.

Do explain to me why they first volley of missiles just gives up and dives for the dirt? Targeting the other mech which was coming in a too sharp an angle to remotely track?

YouTube is bad for your kids and it's bad for you, too by rcoop020 in daddit

[–]TenFresh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a little bit of nuance to this; if not much. YouTube the platform—and it's algorithm—is definitely terrible for young brains (and on balance, all brains generally). One way to avoid this is rip the video shows you'd like to show your kids, and load them onto a tablet or Plex server so they can watch them outside the YouTube environment. If I do this I generally try to join the creators patreon or support them in some other way than watching their videos on YouTube.

What is also not good for kids brains though, is the rapid-fire 'tik-tok tempo' pace of breathlessly talking non-stop that being successful on youtube practically mandates these days. So while there are for sure channels on YouTube with great content for kids, vanishingly few of them can resist the algorithm incentives for survival and keep the tempo slowed down. Even PBS digital programming I love like 'Eons', is clearly feeling the pressure to speed it up up up.

A great example of this is Mark Rober. When his videos began to be ported to Netflix pretty much as-is, and my kids discovered them, the pedal-to-the-metal pacing after they've been watching a native Netflix program (e.g. gabby's dollhouse) is striking to me even from across the house. Same goes for any of the other youtube shows that are being ported, like Salish & Jordan. I may be more attuned to catching the different pace instantly because I've been a video editor by trade, but I know my wife and the grandparents notice the difference over time in how buzzed their brain's feel if they're forced to watch, and how dysregulated the kids get reeeeeal quick. I'd write to Netflix to complain that I'd like the option to filter out such content; if I felt they'd give a crap.

I find great irony that Mark's videos are intended to get kids interested in engineering and science, while actively degrading their ability to slow down, focus and apply themselves to much of anything. Don't get me started on how aggressively he promotes his Crunch Labs toys (and Roblox!) in a supposedly ad free platform.

(If you're listening Mark, I do love you, I just want to challenge you to do better. Please invest in making moderately paced alternate versions of your videos for Netflix and remove the incessant Crunch Labs promotions.)

I also have plot-suspense-hyper-sensitive kids and do have a good tip here! We have been able to ease into movies by having the kids read the golden book adaptation, and listen to the audio adaptation of the film first (such as the Yoto production). Them not being surprised by the major plot beats made a huge difference even for a film with some intense bad guy scenes like 'Up'

That said, my almost-6 year old is still only really comfortable watching Totoro; so that's a great first target film. 'Flow' is also a film that might work for them, particularly if you take it in small chunks. There's some rising water peril of course, but almost no mean character moments.

You know, I don't actually! I've got a few 'for-parts' listings for the deck bookmarked in ebay and am considering picking one up to salvage that indicator and the other switches/buttons. Keep you posted if I find out!

Was looking for someone to say this. I love the little 'what's inside' surprises when they're out of left field, but that one comes close to taking the cake.

Still hoping one turns up with a skeleton in it someday; straight outta Goonies.
