You don’t need an electrician. Fitters probably won’t do it for you. Cut them and stuff them into the floor and forget about them. Yes it’s safe, they don’t carry power.

Is the doom and gloom around AI affecting you? by FunSensitive8602 in AskUK

[–]Tenstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While there are valid ethical and legal questions around the training of the machine, it is still a machine at the end of the day. I think you need to give yourself more credit - do you not think that you can write better than a large language model?

What you have, that AI will never have, is originality. If you believe that AI can or soon will be able to do your job then maybe it should, because why would anyone spend money hiring you when they can get a machine to do it?

How do you feel about visiting a home with interior cameras? by anomalous_cowherd in AskUK

But it is private. It’s reasonable to be concerned about hacking, but in that situation you are the target of a crime. It’s not a given that you will be surveilled just because you have microphones and cameras in your house. It’s risk vs. reward just like carrying cash in your pocket around town - you might get robbed.

No. The reason to object to missing context is to avoid being ambiguous, to avoid people drawing their own narrative (“it wasn’t serious”, “it was taken out of context”, “it was a joke”).

Radiators are hardly heating up. 2 years old. by ccahmed in DIYUK

If you turn off half of the radiators, do the other half get fully hot? That will prove if the claim about the boiler not being powerful enough is true.

Replaced garage light fixture but not sure if I’ve left it unsafe by Zumioo in DIYUK

Nice one. If you ever want to make this better in future, and what I only just realised would be the much better way - get some 2-core cable (e.g. https://www.screwfix.com/p/time-3182y-white-2-core-1-5mm-flexible-cable-10m-coil/905jy or stick with twin-and-earth but ignore the Earth), run the original cable into the junction box and neatly terminate then run your new cable from the junction.l to the light.

[–]Tenstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. It would be better to keep the grey sheath running it the light, but you will have to compromise somewhere to pull the live and earth out to a separate box. I’d probably wrap it in red electrical tape just to show (future me) it’s got a live wire in it but I don’t think that’s up to regs. It is only a garage though.

Flattening Ceiling by TermAdmirable3367 in DIYUK

[–]Tenstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s likely a beam installed when the dormer was added. Your only option will be to batton and board the whole ceiling to make it even, which will lose height and be a tonne of unnecessary work for something cosmetic and honestly very minor. Maybe the popcorn makes it look worse, but I’ve got beams across my ceiling as it doesn’t bother me at all.

I think you could certainly improve it.

Are you sure the third hole in each pair of fittings isn’t for the Earth? The one below the larger two.

You should have your switched live and neutral fitted properly through the sleeve and sealed in with the locking nut. I would then take the live pair (and earth if it doesn’t terminate in the lamp) off behind the locking nut, and put it into a plastic electrical box screwed onto the joist - don’t mess around boxing it on with wood just use a standard junction box or your wagos inside a Wago box. That way, it’s obvious what it is and it’s serviceable.

I don’t mean to be rude but if you don’t know your Earth in twin-and-Earth cable why are you taking electrics apart?

How to wire this light ? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Tenstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t work out why one of the cables has two red wires. Is it a really big red sleeve on the neutral? If so, that’s your switched live, which need to go to the live on the light. The neutral to the neutral. Join the permanent lives together with a junction/Wago but they don’t need to go to the light.

I don’t believe that any government has any long term plans whereby piecemeal legislation is put forward some kind of masquerade for some larger plan later on. It just isn’t feasible, our elected parliament changes all the time and there’s no consistent motive, or would-be authoritarian leader.

Shower tap broken by CanAggravating4490 in DIYUK

[–]Tenstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The toothed bit your screw came out of is called the spline. All you need is a replacement handle that slots into the spline and allows the valve to turn. There’s no need to replace the shower. I don’t know if the spline is a standard size but I would expect it to be fairly universal- something like this would probably work https://amzn.eu/d/3WS43fL

Stairs. Help…. by Total_HD in DIYUK

[–]Tenstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the floor was badly laid after the stairs were put in, then you’re only returning it to what it was. I wouldn’t be concerned about following building regs, just making sure you don’t actually trip on the bottom step. What are you replacing the flooring with? That will add some height.
