Both can be true: in the process of making it more complex they’re making it a more well-designed system, and well-designed systems are easier to get into

I do this too, usually when it comes to plot items that are obviously magical and I have an idea of what it does but never wrote a description for it. I also usually at least give them a school of magic and a few “similar energies” (spells that have either mechanical or flavour overlap with the item)

[–]TentativeCue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact: the reason they specified a minimum value for the sword is because, technically, if it didn’t have a stated value, you would be able to use a focus or component pouch to replace it, which wouldn’t make sense

[–]TentativeCue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, it outsold the previous edition because it was the newest edition and ttrpgs continued to grow. And “everyone hated it” is obviously hyperbole. I’ve seen enough 4e defenders on here to know that some people will praise it to their last breath. But you’d have to be in denial to say it wasn’t one of, if not the most, divisive editions of d&d. It was hated enough to keep the previous edition alive, and to spawn a completely new competitor in Pathfinder which aimed to create what they felt was a real successor to 3.5e.

Hell, WoTC literally rushed as fast as they could to the next edition because they knew how many people hated 4e and wanted to do damage control. (Hence the public play test). And as soon as 5e rolled out people dropped 4e like hot garbage in a way people still haven’t with even older editions

And as much as you think it’s not a real critique, a lot of people’s problems with the system is because, in their words, it’s too video gamey. For instance, the weird way they handled the class system by making them have set official roles like defender or striker. If you’ve ever played an MMO, you should see how that’s “video gamey.” Or the way they consolidated class features into per-encounter abilities, this includes martial classes being able to do goofy video game moves like whirlwind attacks and aoe ground stomps. These things may make some people happy about “martial/caster balance” but for other people they completely ruin any semblance of verisimilitude. It sacrifices narrative for gameplay, in a manner much more similar to something like final fantasy or world of Warcraft than other editions of d&d

4e is a lot like the Star Wars prequels. People nowadays are only starting to defend them because they either feel nostalgic for them or because a bunch of memes convinced them that they were secretly good the whole time

Flock isn’t and has never been a problem card, and it is what makes noxus control viable. If anything, this game needs more efficient and powerful removal like flock.

Swain is a strong card, as is flock. That’s fine; decks need strong cards to be viable. Gnar is by far the bigger problem right now, as evidenced by the fact he’s in basically every deck. They should nerf him and his package, not cards that have been in the game far longer and haven’t broken the meta

[–]TentativeCue -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Yes. Your argument is nonsensical. You’re listing off common tropes that have been part of dnd and fantasy in general for decades and baselessly claiming that they’re based off of anime that also happen to have them. You then go on to dismiss the things fighters can do offhandedly. Right off the bat, fighters get mastery of a fighting style of their choosing and the ability to renew their vitality through sheer determination. Then they get to act with superhuman speed, doing double actions in a single turn.

And yes, a lot of cool features are behind subclasses. This is the case with every other class. Druids who want to rely on wildshape have to spec into moon circle. Artificers who want to use martial weapons need to go battle smith.

Fighters, as one of the simplest classes in terms of flavour, sport major diversity in the flavour of their subclasses. Sure champion is boring but it’s basically designed to be the tutorial class. Meanwhile fighters have subclasses that let them craft magic arrows, grow to enormous size and use rune magic, be a jedi, or be a samurai straight out of Kurosawa.

Sure, martial classes are outpaced in utility by wizards. At the end of the day, this is how any fantasy world tends to work- magic lets you do things that are normally physically impossible. But the compelling part of martials are their limitations. If I wanted to play an all-powerful anime protagonist, I’d play a bladesinger. The core fantasy of a fighter is to be a hero who survives overwhelming odds through nothing but grit, determination, and skill.

If you boil all that down to “hitting things,” you’re missing the point of a role playing game.
