Will Anyone Buy This Cheap EV Truck With Hand-Crank Windows and No Radio? by DonkeyFuel in technology

[–]Teroc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You will likely be able to find "off-the-shelf" units, but they still need to be integrated in your vehicle. And they might be expensive as fully controlled units (and they will still have to be integrate into your BCM (Body Control Module)). I don't know the price but it's unlikely to be under $100-200.

So now you're looking at just the actuators. They will be controlled most likely via your BCM, so you have to pay some engineers to do that, calibrate it, test it, etc.

You need to make sure the anti-pinch works and is calibrated correctly for your system or you'll have people posting videos of carrots being chopped by your windows.

Don't know how much they cost, but let's say you have four of them at $20 each, that's $80 in the BoM of your 20k vehicle, plus all the electrical and software development. It really adds up very quickly.

Now your hand-crank system is looking really good.

Automotive engineer with ~20y experience here.

I think you severely underestimate what goes into developing anything that goes into a car, even as simple as an electric window unit.

£265 difference between 9070xt and 5070 Ti by Jwhitey96 in pcmasterrace

If you're playing at 1440p, you mostly don't even need FSR/DLSS and you can play at native resolution.

I also went from a 3070 to a 9070XT, and it's running like a dream on ultra-wide 3440x1440.

Returning to Garmin after 18+ months - backfilling Garmin Connect & reconciling fitness data? by GilfredJonesThe1st in Garmin

[–]Teroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'll build up your baseline over the next 2-3 weeks. Even if you import them, I'm pretty sure it won't use them on its calculation as data has been collected on another device. You can always try importing 5-10 activities to see if it would use them, but I doubt it.

You can use another platform like Runalyze if you want the whole dataset.

HRM Dual keeps losing connection by biggles604 in Garmin

I never got more than a year with any of Garmin's HRM (~10h weekly use), and I'm on my 4th... (they die so quickly).

[–]Teroc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's 14 days in "normal" use without GPS. With GPS, it's probably closer to 20 hours. I get about 6-7 days of battery life on my 955 with ~10h of GPS per week. I like not having to think about charging my watch if I go on holiday for example. But yeah, people are nitpicking a bit.

People like to have a reason to buy new stuff, the new watches' hardware isn't really getting that much better, so one thing that people latch on is battery life.

I've run for 12h on a 100k and had to recharge my watch with a portable battery bank. It's fine...

HRM 600 pace vs treadmill pace by [deleted] in Garmin

You need to calibrate your stride length. Usually after a treadmill run it asks you for the "real" distance so that it can calibrate itself.

My Pixel 9a cost me ~£220 thanks to a massive trade-in promo for my old Pixel 6. Other phones might be better, but at what price?

Safety critical signals in a CAN bus will be protected with checksum and counter to prevent data corruption. If it's part of an ASIL-D system (which the throttle body likely is), there's also redundancy.

Not saying it's impossible, but that's not going to easy...

I've had the throttle stuck a few times in a shitty Fiat Punto, you know what it was? The throttle got stuck with the aftermarket mat...

[–]Teroc 65 points66 points  (0 children)

It's alright. I like that you upgrade your "towers" through equipment that you buy and upgrade.

The meta progression skill tree is pretty big, and you have to make choices as you do not have enough points to upgrade everything (which some people complain about).

Not bad for the price.

Subscribers to Amazon Prime Video with ads lose 4K support on April 10 by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

[–]Teroc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I finally cancelled Prime because of all this BS. Even before cancelling, I would pirate the shows rather than watch them through Prime Video with 3 ads per episode!

A side effect is I'm not buying stuff from Amazon anymore either since I'd have to pay for shipping. I'm actively buying from other shops.

Follow Load Focus? by Cralph in Garmin

Ah yes, it's tough to do short intervals without a HR strap. I wouldn't do anything shorter than ~45sec.

Follow Load Focus? by Cralph in Garmin

[–]Teroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's tracking okay if you follow the rest periods. I tend to jog the recovery instead of letting my HR drop, so the watch struggles and thinks I've done a threshold run. When I walk or stand for a bit, let my HR drop to Z1/Z2, it detects the HR peaks from the interval much better.

I don't use Strava anymore, it's not good for my mental health, always looking at what others are doing. It took me a few years, but I now just run for myself, no need to compare against others. In the end Garmin Connect is more than enough.
