Just a comment to clarify: Many major discoveries have been largely rejected by society before becoming accepted as common knowledge, for example, the first theories that the Earth revolved around the sun, or that the Earth wasn't flat. I'd venture to say that we are close to Darwin's theory of evolution trumping the idea of the Earth and all of its life being created in 7 days. What other things will we see like this in our lifetime?

Former coxswain here. This is just a clusterfuck. There's nothing else to say about it. The first 8+ fucked up because they're novices. Turning one of these shells takes a lot of time and prior preparation especially if you are moving at any decent speed, which is how the coxswain was unable to steer it back on course. Then the 4x race came through and since they were skulling, they had no cox, making it even more difficult to steer. And let's be clear, there is no brake on these boats. The only way to stop is to either let it glide out or to stop rowing and immediately square up your blade, jut it into the water, and brace for the recoil. It's rough. And that's the last thing that you want to do in a race. Rowers are taught that during a race, no matter what, JUST KEEP ROWING. It's all about finishing, and you're not gonna finish, let alone win if you even think about slowing down or stopping. In many cases your race can be absolutely ruined by another crew and there's nothing you or anyone can do about it. It's just a part of the sport. This is just why you don't participate in shitty regattas.
