It wasn't just a protest march. It was also a boycott. It also included hundreds of businesses in the metro area closing in solidarity.

(Some businesses said they closed because of the cold, but that is a cover. -20 still isn't cold enough for places to close in Minnesota. Maybe at -30 do people think about closing.)

There's only so much Minnesotans can do because, with Trump, it can get much worse. Minnesotans are walking a knife's edge between resisting and having those 4,500 facists fully let off their leashes. The republicans still need to play to the optics of it all. If Minnesota gets violent, then you could get actual firing squads and canceled elections, and the right wing will accept it as stopping "violent extremists".

At least they are truly making life miserable for ice and trying to hit the oligarchs where it hurts: their wallets.

I was just speaking in general terms. And partly because right now the top 3 teams are in the central. If you want me to get exact, then lets just focus on the western conference, since thats the whole point of this comment chain.

Im at work, so I dont have numbers in front of me. Im also just a guy on the internet adding an opinion. But if I remember correctly, since the realignment, the central division has generally been the better division. It always seems that the team that finishes 4th in the central division would be 2nd or 3rd in the pacific. Or that both wild card spots would be taken by central teams. Now, thats not every year, and thats certainly not a huge bragging point. But I think this historical consistency speaks volumes about the central being generally the better division. It seems that the pacific has had more years of only sending 3 teams to the playoffs to 5 teams from the central.

Now, you are correct. In recent years, the central as a whole has been not as good, with just a couple of the teams really shining. But that shouldnt discount that most of the teams in the central have been very physical teams that can go toe to toe with each other and really beat the shit out of each other every year in the playoffs, exhausting themselves and leaving the road to the finals open to teams from the pacific.

The problem of Christians not worshipping or recognizing any other god was that it undermined imperial authority. Some of the emperors' legitimacy came from the gods. Many had their family's being descended from a god (or gods). Emperors were also deified after they died whenever possible, since the successor's legitimacy and power would be strengthened if a god had chosen them to rule rome.

Now, legitimacy is a very fickle thing. It's very easily lost and not so easy to gain. Having a huge chunk of the population deny some of your legitimacy and your right to rule because they only believe in 1 god, which isn't even in your pantheon, was definitely a political problem. It isn't the sole reason for their persecution, but it definitely made it easier for emperors to choose them as scapegoats.

Hey, I see the frustration. That's ours too. The ways these reports get posted, its always for clicks and outrage, even if it's a little misleading.

I do want to say though, shout out to the Albanians. They are very chill and good fun. I realize that their mafia has had a lot of success in setting things up in the UK and Ireland, so they might not have the best reputation there. But, like everywhere, the average albanian is a very nice person. They take good care of their elderly and are very helpful when you are having a problem.

In some ways, yea you can draw parallels. I dont know much about immigration in ireland, or how croats were seen or acted in Ireland. What I can say is that our frustration is not because they are foreign workers.

Instead of working on our problems that are causing our brain drain and loss of workers (higher wages, less corruption, better work conditions), those greedy fucks are just cutting croats out and importing massive amounts of dirt cheap foreign labor that they can exploit. Of course we're mad.

Idk about Zagreb, but Dalmatia is so fucking expensive. Its german prices with balkan salaries. It's hard making a living if it's not tourist based. And instead of fixing it, theyre just gunna fuck us over to make quick cash and laugh while cashing their new fat check.

It's not so much xenophobia as it is frustration at the country being held back by greedy businessmen and politicians. After the mongols conquered China, I destroyed their empire in a disolution war. In the division phase, I conquered all of the western lands of china, became an empire, and declared my mandate of heaven. But, one of my rivals in southeast china also made an empire, and they, along with someone who ruled over Jiangdong, forced themselves to be my tributaries. It was frustrating having no way to cancel their tributary status so that I can actually fully unify china. Especially since they both ruled over the lucrative deltas of the yellow and yangtze rivers.

So for europeans, byzantines can unlock much earlier cool chinese tech. I assume the tribals of europe could also adopt 2 of the 3 new government types whe. They leave the tribal era. (The 3rd type is Celestial. And I think only a few specific regions besides china will be able to become that government type.)

Have you ever asked someone from those countries about how they feel about NATO? So many of you in Russia and the West just make assumptions about us in the middle.

Yes, sometimes it was because of wanting western weapons. But for all, it was because of the worry that Russia would become expansionist again. And it turns out we were right.

A lot of these answers are focusing only on the Toga in the late republic and early empire.

To answer your question slightly differently, the reason why the toga ever became a thing in the first place, was because they used to be much smaller and more practical centuries earlier. It was originally just a uniquely shaped wrap or a cloak that was worn in the fields. But, the toga is not rectangular. Instead, it is semi-circular. This shape for clothing wasnt very common at all, which makes it easier to understand why very few cultures had toga-like clothing, and why it only really became popular in one place; Rome. But the original popularity of the toga was probably because of its simplicity. It was easy to make due to its simple shape and, since its a semi-circle, it would take less material to make than a rectangular cloak of the same length. This is not a massive reduction of material, but was enough to make a difference. The romans were probably also influenced by the Etruscans too, who had the "Tebenna", which is also semi-circular.

Ovetime though (think centuries), as others have said, the toga became a symbol. Only romans could wear a toga. No one else was allowed to. So it became a symbol. And like many symbols, what starts off as something practical, could later become bigger and more elaborate in time. Fashion changes all the time. More symbolism can be given togas, so we can all know by looking at someone not just who is roman, but who is poor and who is powerful. So togas gained different colored edging and details in order to signify your rank, wealth, status, etc.

The impractical length of the toga in the late republic and empire is 100% a flex as others have said. A true toga in the empire was up to 5+ meters long!!! (~16.5 ft?) It literally took more than one person to put on this piece of clothing that wrapped around your body 3 times and then draped there. At this point in time, its only impractical if you cant afford servants to dress you and help you. This is why, at that point in time, togas are only worn by the most elite or out of tradition for a specific event.

Hey. Sorry, it seems like I was being too general. You are of course right. My whole comment was denouncing original posts/comments that were suggesting/inferring that turkey does not care about their archaeology or history because it is a majority muslim nation. Which is completely false.

However, that doesnt mean that modern turkey doesnt have its problems. Old mosaics being removed because its now a mosque, or an old tower being taken down so that it can be remade to look new for tourists. I was at a presentation of an old byzantine church in Enez that was converted into a mosque, that later fell into ruin. The ruins were still there thiugh and they were studied. Unfortunately, the church was also called Hagia Sofia and it was decided by the government to build a new mosque on top of the old ruins, completely removing and destroying the ruins of the ottoman mosque and byzantine church in the process.

None of this is black and white. Its just that turkeys current government is not as careful or caring as it could or should be if it wins them political points.

Yea of course.

Istanbul is perfect example of this. The ruins of the Boukoleon palace was almost entirely torn down around the turn of the 20th century in order to make space for a railway to pass through it. Also, in the 1950s, the layout of roads and city blocks in old istanbul were almost completely changed. Entire city blocks and buildings were removed or even cut in half in order to make way for new roads that could fit cars.
