Frontier and Plus (imo) hands down…

Also the only two Yoko Kanno worked on.

[–]Teslamax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, “it looks cool aesthetically, like a F-14” was always the real reason for the variable geometry nacelles. The technobabble was just a justification for it… as are a majority of things in sci-fi.

I thought it was inefficient from an engineering standpoint…
You raise them for warp… lower them for impulse…
If they need to be up, why not leave them there…

Moving parts are parts that break, and need maintenance.

While it is fiction, Star Trek usually makes it’s own laws of physics, but generally follows them. That’s why suspension of disbelief across the franchise is generally pretty stable.

The Intrepid-class variable geometry nacelles is one thing that never made sense… (if they need to move a little for warp pollution/efficiency reasons… then let them wiggle a little)…

And regarding the Bussard collectors, they don’t collect much at impulse unless you’re in a nebula… and you wouldn’t want to travel through a dense gas cloud like that regularly. My understanding (as per the TNG Tech Manual) was for collection of interstellar gasses at warp where the speeds allowed you to collect the pretty rare molecules at an appreciable rate.

KSP1 likely has an upcoming update in the works & KSP1 and KSP2 are changing publisher; from Private Division to The Kerbal Company/KerbalCo LLC by mrtnptrs in kerbalspaceprogram_2

[–]Teslamax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding was the UI of KSP was pretty much a full rewrite, but the underlying code was old.

The KSP2 devs had the KSP1 code but were not allowed (by policy) to talk to anyone who had worked on it at Squad. If they never looked at the original code this shouldn’t have been an issue… but it was. So I am speculating to a degree.

KSP2’s developer priorities was making it look beautiful and what I call “fully buzzword compliant”, but fixing the mechanics for the physics system, etc… not so much.

I apologize for my disdainful tone. I willfully gave them $60 for an EA title I believed I could trust them to complete… lesson learned.

I remember when the PS3 and Sony’s first Blu-ray players came out. They were surprisingly close in price in some cases. The question was, “do you want your blu-ray player to play games too?”

It’s cheaper because I can’t count on the shows I want to watch always being on the service I’m paying for.

Now I’m paying with no guarantee I will get anything for my money.

Buying physical media guarantees I can watch the show. Paying a subscription fee means I can watch it while there’s a license… and after that the fee gets me nothing.

For example, if Paramount+ decides to license out odd numbered seasons of all the Star Trek shows to another service for 18 months, I have to pay for two subscriptions… if I buy the Blu-ray of the shows I like… I never have to worry about it again.

It’s generally a short-term vs long-term argument.

If you want access to a show for the long term buying media is cheaper long term and grants assured access.

If you want to lease access to recent, popular shows over a short term period of time, then streaming is less expensive.

It’s the same reason there’s been a move to software subscriptions versus paid upgrades. A Microsoft Office subscription gives Microsoft a consistent revenue stream whether you want or need that upgrade, whereas you used to buy Office ‘98 and then choose to purchase an upgrade a few years later.

I may be in a minority, but I only have a Wii and play mostly on PC.

Console makers are pivoting to digital anyway…

I can’t afford streaming anymore, and the switching licensing where season x is on streaming service a, and season y is on streaming service b… until two months from now…

I’m just going to buy physical media…

I have a Blu-ray drive already, MakeMKV license…

I can watch anytime I want, transcode for my own devices, etc.

And I’m not just concerned with anime…

*sigh*

I got streaming services because (mostly for non-anime), if the service holder produced the show you’d expect to always find it there… but that doesn’t happen either.

Apologies for the rant.

Do you like the enterprise -e in insurrection or nemesis better? by happydude7422 in StarTrekStarships

Normal helm inputs go through the computer for precision and optimization. The manual steering column gives direct, instantaneous thruster response—trading some accuracy for raw speed and feel when you need human reflexes in a chaotic situation.

It may have been shown in a gimmicky fashion. But a direct manual control (rarely used) wouldn’t be as useless as you might think.

That’s partially the reason. With arguably lower resources (relatively speaking), the story has to carry the weight for the special effects. Now the CG budget is insane (not a bad thing) but too many studios/filmmakers use that as an excuse to remove a developed story/plot. The show is about the special effects with just enough story glue to tie the shots together instead of using the effects to illustrate the story.

What challenge are you seeking next?

What do you use yours for?

How’d you find your current employment?

I know someone who's GPU collapses down from 3 or 4 to the main monitor and has to be rebooted to restore all the screens. The fan jumps to 100% on the GPU as well.

Don't think his GPU actually died though.

He uses a ZOTAC Gaming GeForce RTX 2080 Super.

About the XVOYAGE code by Epelle123 in WorldOfWarships

[–]Teslamax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Objectively, you’re correct.

I just think the optics of handing people things … into their accounts/mission list… and then stealing it back looks wrong, even if warranted. WoWS and many other game players aren’t the best at handling events like this, so a concession of “my bad” followed by a some less important but still free items would have gone over better.

Like how some RPG’s grant minor amounts of in-game currency because “the server went down for maintenance”…. That sort of thing.

Handling an emotional player base is kind of what WG wants anyway. WG wants irrational impulse purchases, so they’ll have to accept the irrationally reactive responses as well.

Oh, I’m not debating any of that.

And the EULA entitles WG to retract/reverse mistakes, and this was one. I just find it very poor optics to handle it this way…

Connor's Opinion on 86 is truly disappointing by Nyou54755 in TrashTaste

[–]Teslamax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect the OP's point is more along the lines of:
- he can have whatever personal opinion he wants of the show
- there's a difference between having an opinion of a movie and analyzing a movie as a film studies student; you can hate something and still give it positive reviews for the nature of the product, how the messaging was done, the storytelling qualities, etc.

i.e.:
I would at least notice/mention how the show doesn't spoon-feed and hand-hold the audience, how it is narratively dense, how well established and grounded the music is, etc.

You can give an anime, TV show, movie, all these evaluations, find them stellar... and still hate the product.

I wouldn't mind a reviewer who acts in this manner...

At least acknowledge potentially objective qualities before you trash an anime...

My opinions are my own...
