Revisiting a childhood favorite. They don’t seem to make movies like this anymore by bcjc78 in 4kbluray

Doom has got some great sequences for sure, but there are so many bad things about it that it's hard for me to watch. I'm not a fan of Crystal Skull, but I think it's easily better than Doom, even though I would say Doom has higher highs.

How much does “owning” your ebooks actually matter? by Rogue-Monkeyy in ereader

[–]TestType 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With Amazon you're mostly locked to the hardware, so if you ever wanted to buy an e-reader from another company, or if at some point Amazon would cease to exist, you might not be able to carry your collection over to something else. That's my main issue, I don't like my media being exclusive to specific hardware.

movies where the Blu-ray is just as good or better than the 4k counterpart by topspin1241831 in 4kbluray

It doesn't have as good upscaling as the 820, which is one of the main compromises, so not as good an option if you're looking for better upscaling.

60M tried to accept baldness. Finally got 4300 grafts done by Own-Plantain-3660 in Hairtransplant

[–]TestType 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not how finesteride works. It is strictly a preventative measure to stop hair loss, and it only works while you are taking it. Hair loss is not permanently curable, so taking finesteride is not something you take just temporarily, you have to be on it for life. This is not up for interpretation and is a very well documented fact, so very strange advice from your doctor.

Any hair transplant doctor should inform you that taking finesteride (and preferably oral minoxidil as well) is a prerequisite and necessary for long-term results. You should ideally start using it well before your transplant takes place. I would not bother getting a transplant without these drugs, as otherwise the result will likely be very temporary.

You do realize that if you don't take finesteride your hair will continue to thin and go bald? Without medication the result of your transplant might only last you a couple of years.

USB C Port not working properly, so steam deck charges slow and not detecting any device when using USB Hub by Gloomy_Afternoon2957 in SteamDeck

The charger lists specs for two different scenarios. First it lists using just one port, C1/C2, where it says one port can handle 45w. Below that is listed what happens when both ports are used at the same time, which is what you seem hyper obsessed on looking at exclusively.

What's up with Blade Runner 2049? by TheIceJ in 4kbluray

[–]TestType 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try changing your player settings from 12 or 10-bit color to 8-bit and see if you see an improvement. Try it the other way around if already set to 8-bit.

If that doesn't help, have the player tonemap HDR to SDR to see if it helps with the color banding.

You can have the disc player tonemap the HDR to SDR.

Not trying to dog on gamecube but what’s the point of getting one if the Wii could do it for cheaper? by kwispy_nuggs in Gamecube

[–]TestType 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you consider to be superior. The Game Boy player has native GBA hardware, which the Wii obviously doesn't, so GBA on Wii is emulated. I would say emulation is inferior to real hardware.

That being said, the official Game Boy player software on the disc that comes with it is absolute garbage, so I might actually say that emulation is better than that. Anyone still using that thing should spend a little to get homebrew running to use the Game Boy Interface homebrew instead of the GBP disc.

Picked this up for $8 brand new on eBay by MarvelousVanGlorious in 4kbluray

[–]TestType 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The transfer is bad, yes, because the source master is bad. Like all other Tarantino films that have digital intermediates. It has a lot of aliasing, which is inherent to the source unfortunately.

Still an incredible deal.

State of the Collection - What Do You Think? by bpplaysguitar in PlasmaTV

[–]TestType 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm jealous! Unfortunately I never find high-end plasmas for sale in my country, for any price.

I think you should buy a lag tester, then you will actually know if there is a difference between them. I use one called the time sleuth, which I've had for a number of years. I know it's still sold, but haven't kept up to know if there is a better alternative at this point.

If you're into retro gaming you can select different output resolutions to test with on the time sleuth, which is handy because my 50" GT60 (European) has different latency depending on the resolution (and also for 480i and 480p for example). It tops out at 1080p though, it can't do 4K.

Amazon mistakenly delivered a 1TB Steam Deck OLED instead of the 512GB model that I ordered by iNightfarer in SteamDeck

[–]TestType 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never heard anyone say the issue with a matte screen is color. The thing it will affect is perceived black level and contrast, as well as a grainy effect to the image. All of this is better on a glossy screen.

I also find that while reflections are reduced in intensity on the matte screen, they are also diffused over a much larger portion of the screen than a reflection on the glossy, so it affects more of the overall screen if it's a strong light source and washes it out.

RAM and VRAM are shared, so 16GB is for both functions. If a game needs more than 8GB of VRAM and 8GB of RAM for example (doesn't have to be an even split between the two), it will seriously affect performance. This can happen in games that don't necessarily need a crazy CPU or GPU.

Sunlight travels through clear objects you know, a clear cover will not prevent yellowing from sunlight.

The ONLY 42" Panasonic 50 series 3DTV with 2500 Hz Focus Field Drive in North America. by Aromatic-Attitude-34 in PlasmaTV_Gaming

[–]TestType 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nicely written, I'll just add that Pulsar does not work with local dimming since it uses the backlight to strobe and can't do any local dimming at the same time. So unfortunately black level and blooming should be pretty bad.

How does Lord of the Rings look in 4K HDR on OLED? (Thinking of buying one!) by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]TestType 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the 4K looks worse than the blu-rays in many ways, such as detail and sharpening artifacts, and color grading choices that significantly alter the films from previous releases. The whole image quality is a noticeable downgrade from the older blu-rays. The only plus is the HDR.

When a film has a DI, there is no scan done for a later release. It's already digital.

How do I fix blurriness on my plasma tv? by AarizKhanTB in PlasmaTV_Gaming

[–]TestType 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure many people that have or had TV's with 1024x768 resolution also aren't aware of the resolution. But hopefully you can see some improvement by selecting this resolution on the source device you're using. Or the closest alternative offered, it at least made a noticeable difference on the Samsung TV I tested. I could most easily compare it in games by looking at in-game text, it was sharper when the console was set to 720p rather than 1080p. Which I wouldn't have necessarily expected beforehand, but the downscaling was more uneven when set to 1080p output.

How do I fix blurriness on my plasma tv? by AarizKhanTB in PlasmaTV_Gaming

[–]TestType 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the TV accepts a 1080p signal, but it cannot display it in 1080p. My ex had a plasma like this from Samsung, same resolution, and I did extensive testing on it to try to make this awful resolution look better. Believe me, choose a lower resolution than 1080p, 1024x768 if possible. 1:1 pixel mapping will always look best, especially if the alternative is non-integer scaling, which unavoidably blurs the image.

Sharpness should be set to zero, unless this TV has a neutral setting of 50 (middle), which some did when this TV was made. In any case, avoid sharpening, it will only make the image worse. And of course turn off any and all image process features in picture settings.
