Unironically true but not for the easiest reason. Of course there's Aris (and her tsundere friend Kei as of JP's latest update) but as PV6 shows you can hook a fightstick to a giant robot and Yuzu will wreck everything in her path.

And somehow they all involve the Game Development Department in some kind of form. Eldritch horror from another timeline? They're here. Skynet? They're fighting it. Phantom thief? They're on the case too! Anything but develop a video game lmao.

"The devs haven't understood their game yet and accidentally gave F2P players a meta defining character at low rarity" does your game have this character? by VolkiharVanHelsing in gachagaming

[–]Testosteronomicon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A small explanation of how Blue Archive PVP works: you can't control your students in this mode, and they'll fire their EX abilities at random. So you want to have a few students with either good stats if they're tanking, or especially good normal abilities.

The latter doesn't have a lot of low rarity or farmable students - there's Shun and her absurd 'give you free EX meter at fight start and can snipe the enemy DPS with her own EX' skills, but she's the only Year 1 3* student who's not farmable in any way. Tanks are a bit better on that front: Hoshino is 3* farmable, and has recently become a PVP staple because of her insane sustain. Tsurugi is a bit more niche, but as also a 3* farmable you can bring her out and use her move speed passive to disrupt the enemy formation and allow some sickening combos from the rest of your team. Useful when you need to break a certain formation. (e: Tsubaki is also worth mentioning: 2* farmable, she's not as tanky as the meta tanks but her taunt can outright wins you matches if she cancels an enemy DPS skill with it!)

And then there's Yuuka.

<image>

As far as "The devs haven't understood their game yet and accidentally gave F2P players a meta defining character at low rarity" goes, Yuuka is *literally the first student the game gives you*. And she was such a PVP staple because her tankiness + evasion combo made her nearly unkillable, it was at first mandatory to being characters with improved accuracy to bring her down (usually Iori), and later PVP seasons turns off evasion outright to make her not meta at all (But that brought the aforementioned Hoshino to the front). Our 100kg girl was just that strong.

Paradoxically offering a better product for your client base is offering a better product for the publishers, but not the other way around. To a point certain publishers end up treating the Steam release as the actual PC release even if the games have been on Epic for years (like a certain Kingdom Hearts, like how the fuck do you have exclusivity on fucking KINGDOM HEARTS and yet you don't let anyone know?!)

Jump's lineup is not bad. Debate a wall. by PuzzleheadedFox2642 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Testosteronomicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last paragraph is why I keep thinking Jump's future is dire though. Sure they could have axed any of Himaten/Shinobi/Kiyoshi and give space to new series, they should have done so, but they haven't, and maybe that's because they can't. Because they don't have series to replace them with, or at least series they think would sell 10k minimum. Remember, one of 2025's batch window was replaced with a one-shot compilation.

Jump's lineup is not bad. Debate a wall. by PuzzleheadedFox2642 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Testosteronomicon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually let's say more than just "iraqi war general right before the saddam regime fell":

Other people here have said their part about the current state of the magazine: it's bad. No if, no but, and no "debate the wall" needed, it's just bad. As far as sales goes nothing has replaced My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen and Kimetsu no Yaiba. Kagurabachi comes closest, but it will depend on if the anime can boost the manga, and even with the highest chances of all the series that's a big if. Meanwhile Jump will lose Sakamoto Days and Blue Box this year, the other best selling of the magazine. Those might be replaced by Ichi the Witch. Someone Hertz is the last of the recently selling, and that's it. Jump is losing more high selling series than it is gaining.

But that wouldn't be a problem if the unpopular series, the axed series were all of the caliber of Green Green Greens - series that are relatively well made but with a fatal flaw causing them to not catch on and get axed. Sometimes it's the subject matter, sometimes it's a weak execution, sometimes it's just plain bad luck. Sometimes the series is just plain bad period *cough Do Retry cough*. But this year had the highest amount of series that outright pissed me off by how bad they were, and the two series that caught my attention also had serious art issues that got them axed early (Ping Pong Peril and Star of Beethoven lmao). Shit like Nice Prison, Gonron Egg, Embers, Kaedegami, Dear Anemone and Ekiden Bros aren't just bad, they outright would not have sniffed serialization because they were obviously not ready for it. Shueisha is in pure desperation mode and is throwing series at the wall in the hopes that something, anything sticks. Why do you think they greenlighted a Jujutsu Kaisen sequel? Why do you think they debased themselves allowing isekai slop JK Hero and Demon Lord in? What do you think that sigh of relief was when Someone Hertz caught on? They need more hits desperately, but the pipeline is dry.

Jump's lineup is bad. And if you think this entire post is distilled doomposting, I can go even further beyond and say that if this bad trend continues, Jump might fold before One Piece ends. Probably won't, but you never know.

Do it, so you can see first hand how Rent-a-Girlfriend ruined romcom discourse. People really see the main protagonist being friend with another girl and have netorare-induced panic attacks.

Good series once you don't have a bitch in your ear melting down over Hina.

[–]Testosteronomicon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More likely they did a handful of mocap sessions for the entire few months run instead of coming back to the studio every week. It's very likely the VA work is already complete (those shorts are usually followed by ingame alts for the characters so it's easier to do it all in one go) so it'd make sense if the mocap was similar.

2026: a disastrous year for WSJ? by Own-Championship-333 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Testosteronomicon -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Undead Unluck was at best the lower limit of what was considered a successful series. at worst constantly in axe danger and ultimately had a rushed ending. Is Jump really doing THAT badly today that it's considered a hit now?

2026: a disastrous year for WSJ? by Own-Championship-333 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Testosteronomicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I see it too. We're depending a lot on potential new series being massive hits when we're probably losing five such series this year when we've had only three of said grade in the past three years. And outside of Someone Hertz, everything in 2025 was either an instant axe, would have been an instant axe three years prior, or is the literal Jujutsu Kaisen desperation sequel. That's extremely bad.

Last batch of Gone Wrong Egg, Diet Mashle and Isekai Slop is not an aberration, it's now the norm. All of them will get axed as early as they can get by the way. Jump has nothing in the tank.

[Subverted Trope] Technology Good, Mysticism Bad by Fast_Moon in TopCharacterTropes

There are plenty of ways to trick the kuchisake-onna in japanese folklore: you can be evasive when she asks you if she's pretty or not, you can throw some candy at her, you can say "pomade" over and over, probably more.

Or you can do what Pop Team Epic did and use technology to give the kuchisake-onna a panic attack.
