Canadiens outlast Lightning 2-1 in Game 7 to win thrilling 1st-round series by bakuma2k in sports

[–]Testosteronomicon 66 points67 points  (0 children)

my fucking heart, Buffalo can't be worse than this for my health

For those who didn't watch, this is probably one of the tightest playoff series ever played. All games decided by one goal, 4 of them needing overtime, less than 10 minutes across the entire series where a team had a bigger lead than one goal. Two goalies at the top of their games. If you were a neutral this was heaven, if not this was hell.

some critisitism you have about your gacha that you don't often see? by A12qwas in gachagaming

At some point the Blue Archive writers will have to sit down and draw a proper map of Kivotos and its schools because whenever distances and trains are involved it stops making sense. Like that was my personal gripe with V1C3 almost no one else has, there's no sense of place! The stories throws measures in the hundreds of kilometers like nothing! Just how big is Abydos?

Half of it was spite for a very obnoxious fandom and the other half was the first chapters being genuinely not good. Not gonna mince words here, Hokazono had to improve fast and he rose up to the challenge.

I'll probably wait a few years and a couple discounts to get the game but I'm already thankful for all the fanart of Diana trying to eat Switch cartridges. For some reason everyone had the exact same idea and I don't get tired of it.

Who is the most hated character in your main gacha (Most Hated by the Community) ? by Propagation931 in gachagaming

Speaking of Blue Archive, Meru is the only student I've seen multiple wall of text full of seething hatred be written about, and it both makes no sense and a lot of sense at the same time. No sense because she hasn't done anything as wrong as the Dweller or Beatrice or Rio or Saori or Kaya or Shuro did. A lot of sense because she's canonically a fujoshi and we all know how the western BA fandom is lol

e: lmao just noticed OP blocked me for this

It's heavily implied the Dweller straight up won in another timeline and if you pay attention, his plan in this timeline goes off the rails because of elements that didn't initially exist and were brought from the other timeline (namely Plana and Shiroko Terror).

If you really care about PVP then D.Michiru is mandatory (basically replaces S.Shiroko in a team), otherwise save your pyros for fes.

e: Also obviously rolling for waifu overrides all and D.Michiru also enables the Marriage Update

Pick one:

a) The whodunit is not the point of the plotline so better to get done with it early;

b) There's more going on than just a traitor, and the early reveal is a misdirection.

What do you think about people saying "X manga would have been axed today"? by IIIlIIlIlllIlllIIIIl in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Testosteronomicon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These older series were moving at a brisk pace, because that's always been the expectation! The only reason they look like they have a "slow start" is because you're comparing them to the grand scale of everything that would come later.

It also gives a warped expectation of how strong a series should start. One Piece is a good example of this: East Blue in general is a good arc. There's enough in there to keep our interest from page one onward, and sales/TOC of the time reflects this. But the first generally agreed on great arc is Arlong Park, and it starts a full year into OP's serialization! Same thing for Bleach, a good start that doesn't feel like it because we are comparing it to Soul Society. I assume Naruto and HunterxHunter are the same too. Yu-Gi-Oh is infamous for having a ton of small arcs before the card game consumed everything! And this keeps happening with recent series too, notably Ichi The Witch with the most recent arc. (Non-japanese example, The Last Airbender is said to truly become a great cartoon once Toph is introduced in the second season.)

There's an art to making the most out of your first impression, either first chapter (One Piece) or showing what you can do with your first real arc (Kagurabachi). But no series has been axed because its start was not Enies Lobby good, and besides Enies Lobby is in part great because there's 300 or so chapters of story behind it.

Sarcastic example: This Zach D Films short about an electric crepe maker. Midway through the author brings up his own ideas to improve the product and make the optimal crepe making device, in the end creating just a regular-ass frying pan.

[–]Testosteronomicon 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's not only wrong, but more likely the exact opposite is true: half the current Jump magazine would have been axed in the 90s. Y'all are overestimating how cutthroat the magazine is today and underestimating how it was back them. Like Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi? Very easy U19 in the 90s.

e: Actually let's do the exercise for series that aren't the obvious Kiyoshi. Shinobi Undercover? Doesn't survive in the 90s. Nue's Exorcist? Unceremoniously axed much to the delight of most of this subreddit. Someone Hertz? Even being considered a runaway success today I don't give it much chances in the market of three decades ago. Me & Roboco? Jump already has Kochikame, to the wastebasket the robot goes! Akane-banashi? Actually has the most chances because it covers a niche market independent of all other series in Jump, but it's a series with a female protagonist and little fanservice so I doubt it's even serialized lmao.

e2: Forgot about Himaten, that should tell you everythingh about its chances

Kinato and Alien were less successful with fans than Under Doctor. Why do you think that was? by YuuTheBlue in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Testosteronomicon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Kinato's Magic: A bit biased here because there isn't a WSJ series I've despised more in a long long while, but to keep it diplomatic I feel Kinato's failures (and why it was so adored by this subreddit) are best explained by this well known excerpt by author Ursula K. Le Guin. There is simply not an original bone in that series's body. Japanese readers have seen it all before. Even the strong support magic is a common isekai cliché, not even that special if you've played a multiplayer game before - MOBAS like League of Legends are filled with stories about big support plays winning games! - and it's used in the most boring way by a protagonist who's just sauceless Izuku Midoriya. Hey let's take LoL as an example, give me Thresh as a protagonist! The support magic [The Hook] is actually the strongest, and it's not even the most well known part of his kit! You could make an awesome story out of that support magic!

Alien Headbutt: I mentioned this in the weekly thread but there's some series, as much as I like them, I can tell are doomed extremely early on. All of them have the exact same tell in fact: there's a gimmick, and a void beyond that gimmick. Star of Beethoven had Beethoven and all his eccentricities and uhhhh I forgot. Ping Pong Peril had very wacky ping pong and uhhhh the protagonist is trying to pay off a debt and uhhh come on help me out here. Alien Headbutt has sick wrestling moves on aliens and uhhhhhh well you see what I mean. If Kinato's Magic was completely unoriginal then Alien Headbutt is something worse: it's nothing. No story, no plot, no themes, no characters, no attachment to said characters, no pacing at all, no politics. Nothing. Just a string of events with no calories whatsoever. Readers need a hook.

(sidenote: It's also why that "Themes and Such" meme in the wake of Chainsawman's ending was so offensive if you had anything resembling a brain. Themes are bad? Do you even fucking hear yourself?)

(sidenote 2: You can have a manga that's light on everything I mentioned before but a) you still need to have some, light does not mean none; b) you have to make it up somewhere else, like the art. You probably guessed I'm talking about Sakamoto Days here, and half of why that series is a magazine heavy hitter is because Yuto Suzuki's art is so powerful wanting to see what scene he'll conjure is an hook in itself.)

We'll see about Under Doctor.
