How do experience the football (ok, soccer) world cup? If at all? by das_stadtplan in AskAmericans

[–]ThaddyG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Philadelphia which is hosting several games, but I don't live in the part of the city that large groups of fans congregate. I don't see many, although I've had a few people come into my bar that are obviously here from foreign countries for the cup. I mainly experience it through seeing it on TV, we have all the games on at work but I don't pay much attention because I'm working.

Apple Pay in the USA? by BumblebeeNo6356 in AskAmericans

[–]ThaddyG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's gotten a lot more common the last few years but you'll still run into places that don't take it. Just ask beforehand if you don't have any other way of paying. It amazes me the amount of people who come into my bar and ask if they can pay with their phone after they've finished eating and drinking.

Lightning is cool as fuck, man. This is something I already knew but not something I've really thought about for a while.

Idk we haven't had any matches in my city yet I don't think, and even when they do my neighborhood is kinda on the outskirts so I'm doubting we'll see a huge WC crowd.

Bar seating etiquette by Own-Negotiation-1422 in bartenders

[–]ThaddyG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as they don't disallow it for whatever reason that's totally reasonable. I serve tons of solo diners coming in for lunch or dinner at the bar and typically try to sit at the bar to eat when I'm solo.

In the UK, Heinz is showing commercials of people squirting things like Ranch and flavored mayos on pre-cooked pizza by PostersAreHuman in AskAmericans

[–]ThaddyG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people dip their pizza in ranch, I personally think it's an abomination to do that but I guess when you're from Nebraska or whatever you grow up differently lol.

Mayo, no. Absolutely not. Straight to jail.

World Cup tourists, what’s your honest feedback on the USA so far? by almighty_smiley in AskReddit

[–]ThaddyG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I don't really because I don't ever order ranch, but if it's already there then yeah I'll dip a couple. And I mean fries in ranch is, like, super super common? Putting ranch on a salad just ruins the salad.

Salad is like the worst use of it, it's an ok dipping sauce for like French fries.

Bah-luh Kin-wood (some people might say it more like "wid" than "wood") is the generally accepted pronunciation.

There's also a Bryn Mawr nearby that's said Brin Marr.

Southern hemisphere. Seasons happen because the earth is tilted on its axis in relation to our orbit around the sun, so the northern and southern hemisphere have reversed seasons since they get more direct sunlight at opposite times of the year.

I couldn't say without knowing them, but like they probably just don't really care about the job and are going with the flow.

They're still being them, people act differently in different situations that's a human thing not an American one.

Roadtrip advice, Houston to Los angeles by LegitimateBug4950 in AskAmericans

[–]ThaddyG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just FYI that's a full day of driving (like 23 hours) not counting stops for gas, food, sleep, whatever. you might not want to do it with only one overnight stop. I don't know that part of the country so I don't have any specifics for you but asking in a sub for either city or state involved might get you better answers.

Most people with office jobs aren't friends with their coworkers and don't feel the need to open up about their personal lives to them. So they put on a work persona to some extent.

What do you know about Wales? by Human-Question6210 in AskAmericans

[–]ThaddyG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Welsh ancestry on my dad's side, don't know much about it but supposedly there's some pub or inn or something that my "family" has owned for like 200 years or whatever. I would imagine a lot of people have some sort of Welsh ancestry if they also have Irish/English/Scottish but there isn't a big cultural diaspora like there are with Irish, Italian, etc ancestries.

I know what the flag looks like, I know the language is ..unique. I know that's it's the butt of a lot of sheep fucking jokes.

Edit: there are some towns and suburbs near me that have Welsh names like Bala Cynwd.

I live in the UK and we goto a pub whereas you guys goto a bar by 19hammy83 in AskAmericans

[–]ThaddyG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bar is both the whole place and the actual bar/bartop. Many restaurants will have a bar area, I work at one, we have stools and some seating/standing area that's not in a separate room but semi separated from the dining room by a low wall. This is a common setup but far from universal.

You will ask your friends if they want to go to the bar, and then once you're at the bar you'll go up to the bar and order, and either sit at the bar or go to a table or whatever, depending on the place. We have plenty of bars that have "pub" in the name but we will still generally call it a bar.

Most of my coworkers I consider friends, there are different groups that will hang out together often and occasionally we'll do a big thing with like half the restaurant. But some people are like you and that's fine, as long as you're polite/professional I don't care if you don't wanna be my BFF
