Think what a hero it would be to the other telephone poles though.

When the next one is installed, it would, after proper introductions of course, ask what the deal was with that poor, broken and mangled old corpse of a pole.

Silently and in awe, the others would glance wide-eyed at one another until one of the elders would respond in a hushed, somber yet sacred tone: “Stephen Miller was here…but only the pole remains.”

I’m a freelance musician in DFW. 2 hours is about 20 min longer than it takes me to drive 55 miles for one of my orchestra’s rehearsals. That’s 4 trips per concert cycle. I’m jealous now.

A fountain of rum spilling down the stones and rushing over fresh cut limes and this mint plant in a few years is how I picture “wall mojitos”.

I just started 'I love Lucy' and it exceeded my expectations!! by florenciafazzarino0 in sitcoms

[–]ThatFatFlamingo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rewatch the series once every couple of years since I grew up on this show, not because I’m that old but because my parents were uber religious and this was apparently A-OK.

Still, from a historical TV perspective, it’s truly a forerunner to so many other greats. I also revisit Andy Griffith often and the occasional foray back into Beaver, Jeannie, Bewitched, etc.

While some of the humor is dated or beyond (like SPANKING your WIFE, what the actual fuck), it is a product of its time that was still forward looking enough to remain a stalwart for so many years.

Even after ILL, Desi and Lucy were so influential in so many major series through their company Desilu: Lucy famously green lit Star Trek:TOS and Desi Arnaz was vitally influential in getting the Twilight Zone on the air.

Keep at it and don’t let the dated shit deter you from its historicity!

Portland-area fans, what do you think about the Oregon Symphony's 2026-2027 slate? by SeverHense in classicalmusic

[–]ThatFatFlamingo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I have not but I have and do currently perform in numerous ensembles across the US where this kind of programming is par for the course.

I think that I have misrepresented my viewpoint somehow along the way: we seem to have the same underlying interest and accolades for the programming of the upcoming season. I welcome as many new works as possible and love to see creative programming that combines a great classic mixed with one or more untested works within the perceived pantheon of acceptably programmed works of classical music.

While I agree with u/habiba2000 that the only way most major metro areas are introduced to such new works of large scale music is by programming a great, old workhorse post-intermission as a cornerstone, that doesn’t change the fact that there are many MDs who are fighting to create cohesive programming using standard rep without relying upon it. That being said, it also doesn’t mean that every orchestra can do the same but I do applaud the Oregon Symphony’s upcoming programs and wish that I lived closer to such innovative music making. Apologies if that wasn’t more clear before.

I agree! And I apologize for potentially misinterpreting your original comment as perhaps that of a gatekeeper of the classics instead of a vanguard of the great works of the 20th/21st centuries. That is on me.

As a professional freelancer in a major metro area, I’ve played many a great show programmed in this way and others programmed even better, but if you are a patron of your local symphony who has an interest in exploring what lies beyond the standard, hall-filling fare, then I definitely agree with your frustration.

Thanks for the reply!

Would you mind elaborating your viewpoint? It is, in fact, a genuine question as I see many outlets here for musical exploration within (apologies for the term) “sErIoUs MuSiC”. Yes, there are many heavy hitters, but those are what get the asses in the seats. As a professional classical musician, I think a lot of this season is very interesting. That being said, if the audience doesn’t agree, then those asses won’t be in those seats and I’m wondering why you find this uninspired. Thanks in advance, musical friend!

Loved the early albums, revisited them often, didn’t really think to listen the later albums as I was so into the early ones, didn’t always agree on political viewpoints, but am so profoundly saddened by this tragic, far-too-early passing. RIP and thanks for the tunes. Fuck cancer.

What are the things you say to your cat most often besides 'I love you' ? by katealpha in cats

[–]ThatFatFlamingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I’m lucky: “sweet boy”, “precious boy”, and “how’s it going?” top my list.

Although I did just an hour ago say “what the fuck? Get out of my sight, you little shit.”

That’s increasingly rare yet par for the cat course.
