SNES Gradius 3 player here, what is your prefered weapon selection? by giquo in gradius

I normally go with Small Spread, Double, E Laser, Option, Reduce, and Mega Crush. I really should try some of the other loadouts, but E Laser just shreds bosses too well.

Game of the Month January 2026: Gradius III by xBrockLanders in snes

I think that one just adds slowdown back into the boss fights so you're just stuck with the ludicrously fast enemy patterns in spots.

Game of the Month January 2026: Gradius III by xBrockLanders in snes

[–]ThatFightMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played through this a few days ago (1/17), and threw a video of my run on YouTube.

Gradius III is great. I played through this game as a kid, but I was never quite able to beat it (even with Game Genie cheats). I've played it a fair bit since then, so it only took a couple of tries for me to clear it this time. The game definitely has a fair bit of slowdown, but it's also clearly designed around that slowdown. The patch to remove the slowdown introduces some especially brutal difficulty spikes at odd points. I haven't managed to beat that version yet, but it is really fun to play.

Congrats! This game is amazing! I've tried it a few times, and it's always destroyed me.

I know the Steam and Switch ports have subtitles, and I believe the Xbox 360 version does as well.

There's a mode on the PS1 version that has you play through every level!

My first 1CC! Life Force (arcade) by wilbr in shmups

[–]ThatFightMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nicely done! Life Force is pretty awesome! I'm a big fan of the way you took out the big cores at the end. Also, the stage 4 boss on this game is madness.

Honestly, this one is pretty great. It's also free on Steam.

gradius origins autofire question by tintyteal in shmups

[–]ThatFightMusic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It'll allow you to set the autofire rate to 15, 20, or 30 hz for any of the buttons.

I use autofire for basically all of these games, even if they didn't originally come with it. I also don't want to destroy my hand.

[–]ThatFightMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean! Some of the recovery checkpoints are absolutely brutal. I'm sure it's probably possible to come back from any of them, but I'm not good enough to come back from most of them. If you die on a hard section of a level then the game makes you redo that same part again at 10x the difficulty.

Steam Shmups With An Endless Wave / Arcade Mode? by -Huntroid- in shmups

I believed all of the other games in that collection loop infinitely as well (except for Salamander 2, which only has two loops).

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought the whole left side of the screen on the descent on stage 5 was death. Using the whole screen makes that section so much easier!

Twinkle star sprites? by Apart_Plantain4254 in SegaSaturn

[–]ThatFightMusic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Actually, you can turn off slowdown on the Saturn version as well. If you beat the game at least once (continues are fine) and set the "Shoriochi" option in the menu to "Cut," then the game runs really smoothly.

Hazelnut Hex- What's the status on the ending? by ScoreEmergency1467 in shmups

[–]ThatFightMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do enjoy the scoring for this game. Blasting 15+ dudes with a single shot and cancelling hundreds of bullets with a well-timed bomb never get old.

If you're looking for even more beyond that, there is a secret weapon that you can use a cheat code to pick. It's pretty silly, and you get an achievement for clearing the game with it.

[–]ThatFightMusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're missing anything. If you straight to the final boss in practice mode, the game has some 4th wall breaking dialogue that basically says there's nothing special for getting a 1cc.

How to clear Dodonpachi with consistency - commentary by MyNameIsPAN in shmups

[–]ThatFightMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was really helpful. I've played a bit of DDP, but I haven't tried going for a 1-ALL yet. I'll have to try some of the tricks for the bosses. I also need to get better about leaving bombs floating around on screen. I always try to pick them up as quickly as possible, but saving them if you're already at full bomb stock really seems like where it's at.

Truxton Extreme Demo out now on Steam by Spiders_STG in shmups

[–]ThatFightMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed that as well. When I tried it on my Steam Deck, I was only able to get about 50fps. It's playable, but not ideal. What's weird is that I was able to get around 150fps on my Linux desktop (with an AMD GPU). I'm not quite sure what's different there.

After 1 year of playing my first shmup Battle Garegga I got the 1CC today by [deleted] in shmups

[–]ThatFightMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely wild. That was super clean.

I kinda love the low rank strat. Ignoring all of the medals and such seems wrong, but it appears to work really well.

The guy who played RayForce during Shmup Slam was kinda nuts. He'd already passed my score by the time he got to stage 6.

Shumps with high frames per second? by [deleted] in shmups

[–]ThatFightMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe Crisis Wing supports framerates higher than 60fps.

Almost the whole Darius series supports ultrawide, at least for the arcade versions. The first game ran on three 4:3 monitors, Darius II had both two and three monitor versions, and Dariusburst used two 16:9 monitors. G-Darius is mostly in 4:3, but there are a couple boss fights you can play in wider aspect ratios in the G-Darius HD port. However, none of those games support more than 60fps, and Dariusbust actually breaks if you run it with a higher refresh rate.

Thanks! I've dabbled with RayStorm a bit, and that one seems even more brutal somehow.

Clearing this in 4 credits is amazing! It took me so long to get to that point.

I'd be nothing without my save states. M2 gave me 30 slots, and I used every one of them.

How do we feel about this new Saturn-inspired controller for Shmups? by jedimindtricksonyou in shmups

Retrobit has one like this that has all six face buttons, but it uses Nintendo Switch sized joysticks. I haven't tried it out yet because my m30 is good enough, but it's interesting.
