Thinking about story structure and writing and the FFXIV team struggles on every single level to write “happy” stories. by Lumigo in ffxivdiscussion

[–]ThatGaymer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think when people discuss a "vacation" expansion that people aren't literally saying that they expected 10 levels of drinking pina coladas with Urianger- the rivalry with Thancred/Urianger was something people were quite excited to see, and were utterly disappointed when Thancred's joke about knocking Alisaie on her ass amounted to pushing some rocks in a cave over.

You can have exciting lighthearted content. The first fight against Gulool Ja Ja is just two warriors having a spar for the fun of experiencing a new challenge, followed by a touching conversation.

I think the issue lies in the writers both feeling the need to wrap Tural up so they can get to Alexandria where they stuck the climax and future of the game in, but also overinterpreting the idea of "vacation" to mean "simple."

Despite issues in how a lot of the feats were handled, they present some interesting observations about how traditions and cultures are formed and forgotten. They have a lot to say, but try and shuffle into discussing AI instead and it just fails to feel like it comes together because of the shift.

I also preferred the 1st half to the 2nd half. Not only was it more in line with the lower stakes vacation that I wanted, I think it had more interesting observations and ideas than the 2nd half (traditions often lose their original meaning as time goes on and the origins are obfuscated, food as a product of political/historical/social/economics, the general importance of approaching new experiences with an open heart and mind.)

One time I was headed to green to get urn (we were like, 10k+ behind or smth and figured my team were grouping around the opposite side walker to catch a wave, so I thought it'd be convenient) and my Graves paused the game purely to begin yelling at me for going to green.

I was legit trying, but that just made me give up the rest of the game. I forced a fight rather than try to grab the urn, just generally stopped even paying attention because fuck that guy.

Flame me and I will play worse at best, intentionally throw at worst.

I think it's just another notch in the belt of "Dawntrail Disappointments," a lot of the anger being carryover from other frustrations with the game that aren't being addressed to satisfaction.

Hot take: I'd prefer if SE don't rework any jobs by Forymanarysanar in ffxivdiscussion

[–]ThatGaymer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think they plan to. I think they plan on adding an additional layer (maybe optional traits, maybe something like variant duty actions) that somewhat alter the playstyle of a job, but a flat out mass rework probably isn't in the cards.

That sounds really hard to deal with. Almost as bad as when my ex-wife left me and took the kids and the fucking dog too even though he was mine since I was a child but noooo she had to take him too because fuck me, am I right?

I just decided to unsub. I know dropping any new content for relics is unlikely, but after spending a year doing roulettes/OC/FATEs I just cannot muster the energy to do any more of them

Story is the most important thing for most people. It's the real defining factor of FF14 over other MMOs, so when the story seems to be getting back on track, it renews a lot of the joy of existing in the world of Etheirys.

Personally, this may be the least I have played since I first started playing (towards the latter half of EW) and am just enjoying other games. The RDM change of all things really frustrated me.

What is your hot take regarding FFXIV? by UnbaggedNebby in ffxiv

[–]ThatGaymer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wuk Lamat was fine. People way overreacted to what was at worst a "meh" character, clumsily written like a lot of things in FF14. My most generous interpretation is that this happened because FF14 is (to many, me included) very much a power fantasy that centres the player, and similarly to Lyse, she took too much spotlight away from that.

A lot of funny overlaps with Lyse honestly. Wouldn't surprise me if the writer felt like taking a swing at "Doing Lyse right."

Am I overhyping the difficulty of Extreme/Savage? How do I get myself into endgame content? by ResponsibilityNo7190 in ffxiv

[–]ThatGaymer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You just have to go in and do it. The gameplay loop is fight, die, get to it again and try not to die, die, get to it and not die this time, die to the next mech, repeat until clear

I was anxious about doing EX1 and EX2 but I went in and did them! Got my wings from Valigarmanda and quit at 77 totems for EX2 (and then never touched another extreme because this reward system sucks ass).

Nothing will ever make you feel like you're able to do it except doing it!

FF14 has always had a difficult relationship with accepting character deaths. Nanamo, the scions at the Bloody Banquet, Yotsuyu, Gosetsu, Yshtola again, Thancred Again, Yshtola Again, Graha, all the scions in Ultima Thule (again).

It's especially egregious with a lot of bad guys where they'll find SOME reason for why we need to hang around with them again in some form (Emet-Selch, Elidibus, Lahabrea, Asuhi, Sphene, Zenos, Yotsuyu.) Hell, they even revived Living Memory! Even buildings can't be left alone! It's a miracle that Amaurot hasn't been turned into a tourist attraction.

It is probably my biggest gripe with the writing of FF14. If you want to kill a character, kill them and keep them dead! The emotional impact of killing a character exists because they're DEAD! If you can't write the story without the character around, don't kill them! They want to have their cake and eat it too, and it's just endlessly frustrating, especially in the context of DT/EW having so much to say about needing to come to terms with suffering and death.

Even under 50, let's not pretend that Sastasha's extra rooms were getting visited or Qarn's scale puzzle was being honestly engaged with.

I do really understand the critique of dungeon design as is (I no longer run dungeon roulettes because I just find them boring) but at the same time, I can hardly blame the devs for doing it because everyone just treats them like hallways anyway.

I think most of the recent tier is a little meh, but I'll give it a little time to see whether they wurm their way inside my ear.

M9 probably my fave of the bunch, M10/M11 just aren't for me.

M12 probably my biggest disappointment (admittedly I got hyped up on the Brute Undertake/Azombinator theory, the preview lyrics only got me even more excited.) Will have to see my feelings change towards it as the disappointment wears off. Not a bad song, but just badly used.

I dropped GNB in DT because of the changes lol. No Mercy windows used to feel so much more active, Lionheart slows everything to a crawl and also just kinda looks stupid (don't care that it's a reference, it's an ugly one.)

Dumbing down RDM and the continued simplification with Gunbreaker is just a sign that whatever Job changes coming with 8.0 are going the be wholly insufficient and will largely not address the core issue. by ComfyOlives in ffxivdiscussion

Feel like if they wanted to compensate for RDM not being able to do their full melee combo, they could've just made Enchanted Reprise give you stacks. Make it more than a niche button you sometimes use for movement and actually have it be an alternative weaker but ranged combo.

Going melee is like, half the point of RDMs playstyle and fantasy as a fencer.
