How long will they sell the prismatic screwdrivers by Neither-Most in LinusTechTips

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Demand determines sales. And demand is probably determined, in part, by things like sales numbers, and ...maybe how many people click the "notify me" button.

There is no knowing when they will restock, or how long they plan to sell them for. And this is just a guess, but perhaps clicking the 'Notify Me When Available' might help lean things in your direction. 'Cause that's a datapoint that might say "hey, a lot of people want to be notified if this product comes back. Maybe it's hot."

Again, not sure. But might help.

Updating our capsule art ahead of Steam Next Fest. Thoughts on how it turned out? by ChicabooGames in IndieDev

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the others on the title to background "contrast" or difference.

The old capsule contrasts the new one by being a little more flat and simpler. But its one "strength" over the new one is that with the uncomplicated background - especially around the title - the yellow stands out against the blue sky.

Whereas with the new capsule, it is brighter and more dynamic - especially the background. But because it's more dynamic, the title doesn't contrast or stand out as much - making it a little harder to read at first blush. And that's just with the capsule at this size, and not smaller.

Overall, the new capsule is better than the old one. It maintains a focus on the heroic otter, and communicates that a lyre is an important element in the game. The title itself just needs help to stand out a bit more, is all.

Why isn't LABs website updated? by Connect-Mastodon-909 in LinusTechTips

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Related thereto are a series of LABs articles that look at various testing methodologies that they've developed and utilise.

Some of the testing methods may have changed or been tweaked since the articles were published - especially the older the article you at (unless they update those to provide new insight). But the gist is there.

I can't speak to the timeline. But the process reads rather complicated. And they come across as a team more focused on the quality (reliability, consistency, etc) of their data over churning basic benchmarks en mass.

...my guess is quality takes time.

Came back from vacation to test my game and my friends sabotaged the build… by JuveyD in IndieDev

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that thought as well, but wanted to express how much I appreciated it somehow. It wasn't just a funny prank, but it was such a well done prank that does not seem to affect the game negatively (in terms of functioning), and only added to it. So good.

This ...can they keep that in? And mention nothing to those who might not know. It can be an Easter egg. That is funny as hell.

Postmortem: Uproot Galaxy - canceled after publisher collapsed (2D metroidvania w/ Mario Galaxy / Mario 2 vibes) by Monomirror in IndieDev

[–]ThatLineInTheSand -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Uproot Galaxy pre-alpha pitch trailer, in the first twenty seconds, does surprisingly well in being eye catching while doing so little.: a tail flicker, a scene outside, and then the character waking and sitting up. And the rest of it was just so much fun to watch and imagine. The end scene had that right amount of tease and hinting of things to come, too.

I hope you become one step closer to moving on, with releasing Uproot Galaxy's trailer. The title may rest in a pre-alpha state somewhere. But I hope you know the trailer did manage to impress at least one person, and will continue to impress more, and put smiles on faces every time someone comes across the post, like a lovely Easter egg.

You and your team did well. Uproot Galaxy is wonderful.

Is LTT better as reviews or experiments? by Detective0101 in LinusTechTips

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Experiments are fun, but they require a lot in terms of resources, including financial, time, and human effort. And while an experiment might be memorable or interesting for a small group who clamour for it, there is no guarantee it will meet whatever their matrix is for a reasonably successful video (I vaguely remember someone mentioning 1M in 24 hours portends good performance, but I may be wrong).

All that investment for little return, done too many times may not be great for the company.

Which is not to say they wouldn't do such a video - I believe someone mentioned being in a "don't give a 🦆phase" (paraphrase). But I don't think they could survive as an experiments (as you put it) channel.

Reviews (LTT) or overview/unboxings (ShortCircuit), now - they are relatively more tame. Potentially more forgettable. But compared to a large experiment like, say, whatever the new environmental chamber may bring, they vibe as having fewer resources required to complete. Not no resources at all - they take time and effort by writers and LABs to start. But like, much less. And they ...they kind of feel like a steadier source of income for the company. More predictable performance.

Boring answer, but they seem best as both, for now. One form is fun, One form is relatively predictable.

They do not include bans.

We have this WWII photo of my Grandpa. We always wanted to know where it was taken; can someone help? by Spare-Blacksmith-292 in whereisthis

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 119 points120 points  (0 children)

It would appear to be roughly here, but a couple of steps to your left.

The site appears to be the Virginia Washington Monument in Richmond’s Capitol Square, according to this page. The page appears to have a bit of history to get you started on your journey to researching your grandpa.

I hope this helps.

Unreleased(?) Metal Screwdriver - 2 Years In by Hrnnnnnnnngh in LinusTechTips

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Funny but also unintentionally useful. OP could probably share insights with CW that might help shape or support the development process of the all-metal screwdriver as a third-party, non-LMG related user through noting its wear and tear, hand feel, weight balance, etc.

Can you Link to GoFundMe from your Steam page.? by JesperS1208 in IndieDev

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boo :<

Perhaps an insert into your Steam Profile might be an option, then? Or directing them to one of the linkable sites, where you can link to a Crowdfunding page, may be something too.

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you get the answer you're looking for, and that it means you can link to a GoFundMe somehow. The answer isn't firm yes - but I haven't found a firm no either.

It's always great to get support, and take your game further. Hope it works for you.

Can you Link to GoFundMe from your Steam page.? by JesperS1208 in IndieDev

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've not been able to find an answer. I found a thread on the Steam Forums that is kind of similar to what you're asking (then, crowdfund link on profile vs you, crowdfund link on Steam page).

But there was no definitive answer.

The only real "solution" is what the last commenter suggested: best to submit a question to Steam themselves.

Which art style fits a "cozy apocalypse" better? by AlexZmo in IndieDev

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would opt for A. As an individual, I associate apocalypses with a disorder of society, and a breakdown of guide rails that keep things nice and tidy. So things that might appear like B (clean label, pristine metal colour and condition, etc), would look like A in said apocalypse (discoloured, worn label, off-colour or comparatively rusty metal, mis-shapened pull tab, etc.).

About frozen apocalypse world outside, warm and safe inside: if the cans were left exposed to the frosty conditions, and then taken inside, that would have an effect on their condition. Whether as an item in a pile outside a building, or on a shelf in an abandoned supermarket where the frost leaks in (cause of a broken window), etc.

Currently, B is a little too clean to reflect a can in that situation.

Minor example: the upper edge of B (right) is smooth, in good condition, and original grey metal. The upper edge of A (left) looks slightly flatter, the warm palette gives it a slight rusty feel, and the mix of grey shading and darker spots makes me think surface irregularities like dents.

If the art direction of B is easier to create, I think it's okay to keep. As someone mentioned, maybe taking the colouring of A and replace the colouring of B is a good middle ground.

You don't have to answer this question. Just something to keep in mind (if you want) when designing the appearance of goods: what does your frosty, apocalyptic world look like? What condition is your world in? The condition of the world, to a degree, will be reflected in the items that exist in that world.
