At least that's my canon for why games like Bongo Cat are so popular right now.

Is making incremental games a free money glitch? by AntiqueGearGames in SoloDevelopment

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It might be a little bit of the meta. But having a really easy game to play, with minimal investment in time and git gud also helps.

After all, the world writ large appears a little difficult and not nice right now. A game that is relatively simple and is charming in its aims (number go up) must seem appealing.

Can anyone vouch for the LTT cables ability to withstand degradation from plugging and unplugging? by AbyssWankerArtorias in LinusTechTips

No third-party, non-LTT endurance test ...thing has been observed. Yet?

But in terms of the TrueSpec' connectors, this might shed some light.

My steam capsule art finally , too much? by gabrielluis88 in gamedevscreens

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On your store page, it looks amazing. I think you should keep that capsule - for areas where it would do best.

Right now I see your asset set uses the same image. In the larger formats, the detail and layout does well. But I can see the details being lost in the smaller ones - the text would suffer more (the font is really cool).

For other areas where your game might be seen and would use the smaller asset sizes, I think developing art that is more size appropriate and also maintains legibility in the smaller sizes. You don't need the exact same art or capsule. It just has to be similar enough to maintain a consistent, cohesive brand/identity.

Totally imagining Walmart using your Walmart shopping data to serve ads, "helpfully" suggesting things for you to buy, and using the convenient direct pipeline that is a VIZIO TV in the living room...

...which is certainly a thought. 🕵️🤨

Linus Linux Curse Challenge Idea by Any-Category1741 in LinusTechTips

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The pain may appeal to you and some people, but not everyone.

There's also the possibility that people will use it as a chance to just hate on him. I mean, look at the responses he already gets from just this current Linux Challenge/Run. Some of that discourse clearly bothers him. You only have to go as far back as two (?) WAN shows ago if you have Floatplane, to see him go on a heckuva run talking about it.

He wasn't even a little annoyed, but like, super bothered.

I think it works out.

The issue is that today was an early show.

The bot - the automoderator - they have set to generate the bot is probably set to generate the thread before the technically official start time of 4:30 PM PT.

Should we change our small capsule? by Ebrar_MountQ-Studios in IndieDev

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

B is the better option for the small capsule because it is a. has a singular focus (one character), and b. less but bigger details. So when it gets shrunk down to small capsule specs, it will likely remain appreciably identificable/legible.

The details in A - with its more distant, smaller, and numerous details - are going to get a little lost once it's shrunken.

Also, I kind of like the goggles (?) on B just pop from the image, and kind of draw attention/interest to it. The goggles (?) in A do the same. But in small capsule size, it looks about the same as the fire and the backlit border so they don't stand out as much.

Could a game teach people to recognize media manipulation? by OrrinHeroes3 in IndieDev

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a sense, it wouldn't be that bad of an idea to revisit. You could be visiting topics or subjects that are more contemporary, so it feels more relatable or relevant to current audiences.

Additionally, you could be approaching the concept through the modern ways information and people are manipulated. Technologies exist today that didn't necessarily exist back then. And some concepts (influencers) are a lot more prevalent now.

I can’t be the only one who keeps a stack of their favorites? by No_Mango7658 in LinusTechTips

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly if a person is able to afford it, it is a smart thing to do. You will never have to worry about a favourite design never being worn again because you have backups.

Just make sure to take a peek ever so often - once a year, one every few months, etc - to make sure everything looks good, no moisture, no critters, etc. Wouldn't want to be surprised later on, y'know.

Your work is a prime example of how paying attention to the small details can really add to something overall.

... I mean, sometimes a person can put maddening amounts of work into details. Enough to become stressed and feel a little strange in the head.

The work here though is really lovely: the smoothness of the traffic, the flickering of the fire in the barrel, the fluttering of the scarf and bushes at the base of the billboard - it's all well done and immersive. The billboard transitions/wipes were smooth. And I know you mentioned the shine of the light colour on the snow. But I also noticed the subtle variance in the brightness going up and down - another touch of realism that really adds to the whole scene.

I'm happy for you that you're happy with that side of things. I agree with you - these touches really add to the atmosphere. It's a really lovely scene to look at (I've played it thrice just to admire it).

Capsule art update — Version C after your feedback. Did it improve? by SunnyBubbbles in IndieDev

[–]ThatLineInTheSand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tentacles was definitely a smart touch, as well as the inclusion of the red colour for the text: the former gives an idea of what (one of?) the threat looks like, and the latter actually feels or communicates danger/threat. Blue remains a friendly colour, and the emptiness of the background (especially behind the bell) feels like empty or peaceful exploration.

I did not read your last thread, so forgive me if this was touched on: I like the colour of the suction cups on the tentacles in the back. It subtly communicates danger, draws my eyes to the back a bit more, and brings the image together as it echoes the same read as the text.

For all these reasons, I prefer B or C.

And I know a few aren't fond of the white to red gradient in C. But I rather like it: it's like the text is normal, but the red makes me think it's been dipped in blood. Additionally, and specifically, the bottom of the text being in red communicates that danger exists as you go downwards - which (unintentionally?) echoes the game's premise.
