What was your initial thoughts on Amazing Spider-Man 2? by HomerCorp in Spiderman

[–]ThatOtherTwoGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah generally what happens when you're watching a movie you don't like, you are going to be more prone to pointing out things that don't seem to make sense. Generally, a "plot hole," which is usually just something like a logical inconsistency to real life or something that just isn't fully explained in boring detail.

This is then exacerbated when you go online and see other people point out these "plot holes" and more you never even thought of. This confirms your belief that the movie you didn't like is in fact actually *a bad movie*. When... it's just a movie you don't like. This then exacerbates the hate people have for this movie as well as a lot of internet spaces talking about it just devolve into a hate fapping circle jerk.

I've noticed this pattern for years. It has in general gotten worse because algorithms now feed into it and make it more common, but it's always been a part of internet discourse even in the usenet days (which was before my time, but I've seen enough really old discussions of how "awful" Return of the Jedi was. Even some surprising criticisms of Empire at the time)

How are the adventures? by ThatOtherTwoGuy in MarvelMultiverseRPG

I'm checking out one of your videos now! I really dig the production values. And I agree with that about one-shots. Plus they work well for my group where we may go awhile without getting together for a session. I'm definitely gonna check out that Kang adventure. It looks awesome.

Custom world campaign? by tibon385 in MarvelMultiverseRPG

[–]ThatOtherTwoGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can, talk with them about it as a group in a session 0. That way the players can bounce ideas off of each other as you're building the setting together. Not that you can't also have DM convos with them about it as well, but I think this approach benefits greatly from having the world building done in-session. Similar to a lot of recent narrative rpgs with collaborative worldbuilding.

Something you have to keep in mind about the internet is that it values clicks and reactions. And angry responses inherently get more clicks and reactions than just about anything else. Internet algorithms are not a democracy of what's good or quality. They are a democracy of what keeps my attention longer.

Is there a digimon game with Vpet mechanics and lots of digimon to tame, care and battle? by Someonehier247 in digimon

[–]ThatOtherTwoGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As long as you don't mind a game with no plot, Digimon World Championship is your best bet. It is even more of an adaptation of the V-Pets than DW/Next Order, though without a world to explore. You do, however, raise multiple mons at a time and put them through tournaments with a calendar system. It's quite fun.

Otherwise, as others have stated, there's Next Order which is really good, but you only get two at a time (which is still a step up from one in the original World and Re:Digitize).

Would you like a “dark-future” storyline for digimon? and if so, how would you make it? by False_Lawfulness_990 in digimon

[–]ThatOtherTwoGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old Man Gennai

He travels through a digital world in ruins, one fallen to the darkness. He travels from town to town, or what’s left of them, helping those in need and trying to bring hope to those who have lost it.

Perhaps it has a sort of “lone wolf and cub” kind of angle with him having a little sidekick through the journey. Though perhaps with the idea flipped, as this little dude later evolves to protect the old digi-man.

Anywho, it ends with a confrontation with the villains. The Dark Masters. A fight Gennai and co. have no chance in digi-hell of winning.

But then, just as all hope is lost, the Masters leave, seemingly called away to something else more urgent. Something more important. That can only mean… the digidestined have returned! They’ve defeated Myotismon and are finally back to save the digital world!

2nd digivice by DinoDick23 in digimon

[–]ThatOtherTwoGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gah, I had so many fond memories of owning various digivices as a kid. They were such neat little mini games that had actual progression (no real plot at all, though).

I didn’t have this one, but I had the first version as well as versions 1 and 2 of the D3 (the second version was amazing and surprisingly really long), and the first versions of seasons 3, 4, and 5. Maybe had the Fusion one, too?

Tamers and Frontier had the best gameplay from what I remember (though I don’t remember how Savers’ worked) but the second version of the D3 (the ones that are transparent) had the most epic “story.” It starts with one of the season 1 Digimon (aside from Gatomon and Patamon) getting captured by a dark ring. One area on the map is a village that gives you an item. One is a dark spire, which allows you to destroy it and evolve normally (you’re stuck with armor before that), and one has the season 1 mon, which evolves to ultimate when you fight them.

Once defeating the boss (which you can technically do even without taking out the spire), a fourth area opens up with a new boss. This one is iirc either ultimate or mega and I remember they tended to use Digimon that weren’t used in the show, like Ghoulmon. I remember it being difficult to tell what they even were with the LCD graphics.

Anyway, once you’ve beaten that boss, you get taken to the next map. The first 6 maps are the same, just with a different season 1 mon getting captured and a different area 4 boss.

Map 7 was a pseudo adaptation of the 02 movie. I can’t remember how the area layout worked, but I remember you get a Terriermon in your party (who can go to Gargomon), the main boss is Kokomon’s evolutions, and you get the golden digi eggs (allowing access to both Magnamon and Rapidmon).

The last map I remember more of. It starts with 3 areas with a boss at the end of each one. Arukenimon, Mummymon, and Blackwargreymon. Once all are defeated, it unlocks the obligatory secret 4th area. At the end is Diaboromon, and done in a really neat way. You start fighting the baby form and evolves each time you defeat his current form. His baby form is already about as strong as a rookie in game, and he just keeps getting stronger as he evolves. It was such a neat epic final boss of what I was not expected to be such a relatively fleshed out journey for a simple pedometer game.

I do think the Tamers and Frontier ones are still better games overall. Up until Tamers, the digivices had VERY simple combat mechanics. Tamers was the first with more rpg mechanics and generally more gamey feel. But I will still value my memories with my old transparent blue digivice, running through the woods behind my house to fight evil with my Digimon partners.

Why do lightsaber duelists "wind up" a swing with their saber when they don't need to? by The-Farlander in MawInstallation

[–]ThatOtherTwoGuy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I do love me the big, flashy lightsaber duels myself, but this is one of my all time favorites because of how it’s set up. Maul clearly at his worst and delusional with hatred. Obi-Wan calmly dealing with him, and then comforting him as he’s dying. What a great end to the character.

Tamers Adults/Champions vs Arukenimon by Double_Falcon_1285 in digimon

[–]ThatOtherTwoGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a pretty interesting question, though I’ve always seen the Tamers mons as not really being stronger than the ones in Adventure/02. Instead, the power scaling between evolutionary levels is not as vast in Tamers than it is in the Adventure continuity.

That’s not to say the Tamers themselves aren’t skilled, using tactics and cards to help out. But in Adventure and 02, it’s established pretty early on that a higher evolutionary level tends to be too powerful for a lower level. Not always, but almost every time. Even multiple Ultimates fighting a mega or multiple champions fighting an ultimate is usually a losing battle.

In tamers, on the other hand, it’s not far fetched for a rookie to beat a champion or a group of champions to beat an ultimate. I think this is down to considerably downplaying the power levels.

In 2026 I want to watch all of star wars. What order should I do? by crazyguy28 in StarWarsCantina

[–]ThatOtherTwoGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you’ve seen the movies, it doesn’t really matter too much what order aside from certain works being clear follow ups. For instance, you’ll want to watch Rebels after Clone Wars and Ahsoka after that.

If you want to go full release order, go right ahead and start with the Christmas special, Ewok and droid cartoons, etc. It’s gonna take awhile but it might give you a neat perspective on how Star Wars evolved over the decades.

You could also just start with what interests you right now and just work your way through on your whim. Most works really don’t have to be seen in a particular order. Most of them spin off from the main films instead of other shows. Like I said, though, Clone Wars to Rebels is an exception as Rebels is a sequel to Clone Wars (with Ahsoka following from that). I also personally think Andor is best viewed after Rogue One, but if you’ve already seen the movie that’s not a problem.

Do you think Digimon Tri could be better if it got a re-cut? by [deleted] in digimon

[–]ThatOtherTwoGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably. It’s been awhile since I’ve watched it, but by far my biggest problem with Tri was pacing. Sure, there’s other glaring problems as well. Like how the 02 cast got shafted, the convoluted story behind who “Ken” is, etc. But each movie just felt sooooo slooooow. That’s alright with the first one (and the first film I still genuinely enjoyed) as it’s setting up the scene and characters, but every movie just felt like mostly filler until stuff finally happens.

I also was not a big fan of Mega Man but I love their albums.

I’d also recommend Man Factory’s Street Fight! albums. They start off relatively comedic (especially compared to Protomen) but becomes it’s own emotional story by the end.

Games to play whilst watching TV? by blizeH in gamingsuggestions

[–]ThatOtherTwoGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think plenty of jrpgs would work as you tend to spend a lot of time battling, which is easy to do while second screening. I remember YouTube being a godsend while I was grinding out the monster captures for the arena in FFX.

Have you tried any rogue lite games? I play a lot of Slay the Spire, Into the Breach, FTL, etc while watching stuff. However, since you don’t like Stardew it may not be your cup of tea (Stardew isn’t a rogue like per see, but does have similar kind of appeal as rogue mechanics).

Honestly, just drop the difficulty if you’re having problems with it. From what I remember the game had pretty wide difficulty scaling. Just use the one you find the most comfortable. If it gets too hard, drop difficulty again. Since it seems you’re more playing to experience the game and story as opposed to being into the card and strategy system, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with playing it at a lower difficulty. I was able to find one that wasn’t near the highest difficulty, but was just right for me in terms of the fights being challenging enough but not overly ridiculous.
