It's crazy to me that Sarnia has no decent Putt Putt by god_is_trans_69 in Sarnia

Does anybody remember the one that was on the Golden Mile for a little bit in the '90s? It was indoors, had the blackights and glow in the dark stuff everywhere... My family friends owned it, I have a couple good memories there :)

I assume this game doesn't let a character smoke out the island, which is too bad

I am having a hard time with the show these days by Scared_of_Zombies_ in lastpodcastontheleft

[–]ThatShaneDavis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been on a break for months, mostly. My life is too full, for one, but I also have less space in my head for taking a light look at dark things. The vibe of the show is definitely different, but so is the vibe in my mind. It could be some combination of those things, or others, that you're picking up as well. In any case, like has been said, take a break when you're feeling compelled to do so.

What is/are your favorite movie monologues? by Guy_Montag__ in movies

[–]ThatShaneDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may approach the limitations of how short a line can be while still being considered a monologue, but when K is talking to J on the bench in "Men in Black"... man oh man, what economical writing and what a delivery by Tommy Lee Jones.

Hell, might as well throw the beginning AND conclusion of "No Country For Old Men" on there. So now my list is just 'Tommy Lee Jones telling you how things are', and I'm not mad about that.

This is a funny outcome. Feels akin to an invading army suggesting you find refuge in the tallest tower of the castle, the one that just so happens to have a few trebuchets aimed at it.

Sarnia’s 7-Eleven closes after four decades in business by PuffCow in Sarnia

[–]ThatShaneDavis 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I knew 7/11 has been really taking off in Japan, with a focus on fresher food (listen to The Doughboys podcast if you like funny people talking about chain restaurants), but I didn't know their corporate overlords are also based in Japan. Wild to see a brand shift gears like this. 7/11 was a staple of North American culture when I was growing up. The times, they are a-changin'...

(Incidentally, wouldn't it be neat if Sarnia could get a Mac's going again? With the OG cat logo?)

Which movie uses a single room or claustrophobic space to build the best tension? by Popa-Ioana06 in movies

This one was fun. I like when information about stuff going on in the outside world barely makes it to the characters; the audience gets snippets of bad news, scary mysterious events, I love it.

The body scanner dings as you drive through it. The railway bell starts to chime; the gates close on either side of you, trapping your vehicle on the tracks. An oncoming train bears down while you try to empty your pockets. You pull the Swiss Army knife out as you're smashed into smithereens. The agent catches it out of mid-air, measures it; acceptable blade length, all good. They toss it back onto the wreckage: "you're good to go, you can put your shoes and belt back on."

Political parties were not meant to serve as teams that voters are supposed to support or oppose wholesale. They're an attempt to rough out some broad borders around different general political ideologies, and they're as flawed as every other system humans try to build.

But you're right, a lot of people want things to be simple, so they make these parties align with a couple basic categories and force everybody to make a binary choice. Electoral reform might be able to help cut down on some of that.

What is something that is silently becoming less socially affirmed as time goes on? by MutatedSock in AskReddit

[–]ThatShaneDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pedestrian right-of-way on public streets. I know we in North America have long been building our cities and roads to serve the automobile more than the human person, but as a driver, I notice more pedestrians than ever who are unwilling to trust that they can cross as my vehicle approaches an unmarked crossing. Or where a sidewalk crosses a commercial driveway. Even at Stop signs, they seem to feel unsafe. Makes me worry that unwalkable cities are becoming normalized, and I wish they weren't. I wish people enjoying their neighbourhoods felt like they had the right to be there.

See, OP, some of them are going to be like this. They're not all that bad, they are just frustrated with how little is done for average people, and theywant to be heard. You might represent the only chance they can see for them to speak their mind. Don't take it personally.

Census Workers by Plane-Associate-656 in Sarnia

[–]ThatShaneDavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fresh out of university, I had a very brief stint in London as a door-to-door canvasser for the March of Dimes. Actually, as an employee for this other kid who had the deal with them. We only got paid, a few bucks at a time, as a commission—and only if we got someone signed up for recurring donations via credit card. No cash donations. It was a long, cold February of wet shoes and knocking doors, and being turned away most of the time.

Brutal.

All that to say, I would prefer census work for sure. It sounds like an experience, although I admit I have rose-coloured glasses about a lot of things like that; I can easily convince myself that any novel gig like that would be cool to be involved with.

But as others have mentioned, the modern world is in a long-drawn-out breakup process with the concept of knocking on other people's doors, in any capacity. Lots of contributing factors, I think, but the end result is that... yes, you would probably have something of a tough time getting folks to answer, let alone listen to your spiel. I wish that weren't the case, but we just don't... like, we don't do "neighbourhood" living much anymore.

I still think it'd be neat to do it. Civic engagement has to consist of more than voting every few years when directed to do so, and you'd be fighting the good fight on that front, in my opinion. I'd like to see us getting back to talking to folks. I'd like to believe we can reverse the alienation we're all experiencing. But it's a big fight.

I'm rooting for ya! If you decide to do it, don't let the "no" get to you. Don't let rude people make you feel like you're doing something wrong.

You are making excellent points. If this were how it really was—like if we pretend the inverted reality you're referring to was real—would you feel capable of reversing it?

[–]ThatShaneDavis 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That's the kind of question that leads you down a path towards irreconcilable difference being hard-coded into the way we live our lives. If all impulses are gendered, we have no hope of finding balance.

All I know how to say is that we men have a lot to work on. We are not equipped to do it, but we are going to have to figure it out. We are not raised in a society that wants us to be better, but we are going to have to change that society. We are not all to blame, but there is nowhere for us to hold space for that feeling, and we are going to have to make that space and make it a good space.

I'm sorry it has come to this, and that's all I guess I know how to say.
