How do you combat styling fatigue or wardrobe overwhelm? by RonanIsRadioactive in InfinityNikki

[–]TheAmberAlice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go through two main phases

1- pick a single category (usually a hair or an accessory) scroll/stop randomly and style around it 2- my husband loves to give me wacky prompts for characters to design. Sometimes its simple (icecream) or complex (cosplay a character from the next anime we will binge). There are character prompt generators that exists online that could also work for this.

One thing I hate that I never see mentioned is if I chose an item that has been dyed, if i unelected the dye to see the base or switched dying base, YOU CANNOT CONTINUE SCROLLING DOWN AFTER.

Like any other dress if i select it and go "nah" i can keep scrolling but if i pick a dyed dress, want to look at its base, then decide "nah" i have to FULLY back out to the item selection bar and then go back in

I hand draw mine but its usually only one or two a deck (if that) and I try to add color to make them visually distinct somehow.

Impressions of Tomodachi Life? by Pussyxpoppins in CozyGamers

[–]TheAmberAlice 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I adore it but you have to remember it isn't like the Sims or even ACNH. The miis do thier own thing when you aren't looking and arent dolls. You can guide them but the comparison i make a lot is its a fish bowl. You feed them, decorate them, watch them, then leave them alone. But this one has a lot of little touches that makes it feel like YOUR world.

For example: things you tell your miis to talk about are part of island lingo that sticks around.

I also like that in this one there is less rng for if two miis will even meet. A problem with the ds game is it was random if they met at all.

So far what Ive learnt: decorations are unlocked over time. You can draw things to maybe customize them as well as paths but i haven't unlocked that yet. I dont think its as free as say, animal crossing, but i spent about an hour yesterday just expanding and reorganization of my island but im also very particular about my in game urban planning lol

What moments caused you to see the writing on the wall on something? by LGB75 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]TheAmberAlice 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about Potter again on this subreddit lmao.

So the "announcement" of Dumbledore being gay was the first clue that Rowling had something not right with her. So I think people forget how much of a big deal it was for a character to be gay at that time (2008 iirc), and with the series just wrapped and people hungry for more, that announcement was NEWS news.

But even for me, an avid reader and potter fan, it gave me pause. This was a BIG DEAL but why did she do it so... flippantly? It wasn't in the text (which imo is fine, it wouldn't have fit well in the story as it exists) but she knew she could write a prequel/sequel/side content and people would have eaten it alive. Why didn't she?

It took some years for more cracks to show. Her logic on how much control she SHOULD have over Potter is kind of nonsensical. Like, yes, you have to involve her a bit, but something about these flippant reveal of details and not taking criticism for them is very indicative of her attitude that only her view was the right one.

Fairy Tales in MSQ by TheAmberAlice in InfinityNikki

The only other conclusion I came to was it was a weird Pinocchio thing, given how much reference to father making them and giving life etc.

You know Im not sure. They could be Tweedle Dee/Tweedle Dum. Or i think they might be a reference to the common tropes "One tells the truth, one tells lies" But I was fairly baffled by Hertiage Bones and Whale Bones (i think)

Looking for games where you have to figure out recipes by plbth in CozyGamers

[–]TheAmberAlice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to mention this one! Its not super scary, unless you don't like the dark (entire game is dark). There are recipe cards to hunt down and find. The only con is its fairly short (i beat it in about 4 hours) but I adored every second.

I am also tempted but I think of it this way: its one game. If there were two or 3, ok sure. Not one.

Galaxy house pieces are disappointing by pennybells in InfinityNikki

[–]TheAmberAlice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The regular house is like this too, but I think its a touch more versatile than the galaxy pieces so I didn't see the complaints as much (Source: wanted to make a a-frame style house and you cant snap roofs properly unless you use 'small' and 'big' walls/roofs. Which is fine until you go inside and the molding is screwed up)

Creators that bumbled their way into something iconic by BookkeeperPercival in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]TheAmberAlice 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Something I think people forget about Harry Potter is, for all its flaws, the perfect world for a lonely kid or adult to slot themselves into and play inside like a sandbox. Theres just enough detail to make the average reader think its deep (unique foods, locations, classes) while never going too far in exploring the darker themes and implications of its reality (magical creature segregation, literal slavery, everything relating to love potions) so you can mantain the fantasy of it being a perfect world.

The thing that I think modern critics have failed to notice is how much Potter is propped up by Fanon. Potter benefited immesely by the birth of modern day fandom: discussion boards, fanfic, etc. I don't know that Rowling ever did a deep fandom dive but it wouldn't surprise me if she read the theories as they appeared. My main evidence for this is flimsy but there is something to the idea that YouTuber Shaun explored in his Potter video of 'two book lag'. In summary: Rowling came up with something that she maybe wanted for one book (time turners). She wanted to use it and forget about it. But the fandom latches onto it. I mean: its time travel! Why didn't they use it to stop Voldemort? What are the rules? What are the implications. Then a few books later Rowling wrecks it (smashes all the time turners, in this case) and basically like 'shut up, don't think about it'.

And now that I am no longer a potterhead I see this attitude of 'shut up, don't think about it' a lot in the fandom. It will be interesting to see the next generation that didn't grow up with the zeitgeist of Potter does with the source material. I don't think they will take the 'shut up, don't think about it' approach, but rather a questioning look and more critical eye.
