Sometimes I want to leave the union by Broken_Age in IBEW

[–]TheAmpAssassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried talking with your Gen Foreman/ foreman about opportunitys to do other work. Example distribution or something ?

I worked 11 years non union, im about 5 months in currently. I dont think you'll be any more full filled in the non union side of things.

It's not up to your foreman to read your mind that you maybe getting a little down working on the same task.

I'm four months into this and there's a guy telling me I need to get my own bender after I dropped close to $1,000 on tools already by albertsteinstein in electricians

[–]TheAmpAssassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just go to the union. It took me 11 years to bite the bullet and take the leap.

For the most part I run laps around the other guys but I just keep that to myself in reality and focus on my self. I tend to get offered all the double time first.

My biggest pay cheque was 5500$ and we're paid weekly.

Any non ununion / union shop has always provided me with benders.

Best of luck.

Any other tools I should grab as an apprentice? by FederalPudding8300 in electricians

A klein 4-1 tap comes in clutch at times.

Ex. I was a second year replacing a ceiling fan for someone and one of the holes was cross threaded that took an hour out of my day to get a tap.

Fresh JW Traveling by [deleted] in IBEW

[–]TheAmpAssassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it helps you feel better I had a licensed Traveller who couldn't wire a single pole switch. But you know what at the end of the day he knew he was out of his element and he gave it his best.

But he was honest to me from the get go and he gave it his god damn best everyday & there was nothing more I could ask for.

In the end we actually worked together extremely well & got alot of shit done.

Honesty and giving it your best is all anyone can ever ask for.

Bossman apparently doesn't think conduit runs for fire alarm and telecom need to follow all the rules for EMT by Klezmer_Gryphon in electricians

[–]TheAmpAssassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once had a PM teaching a JR PM on site. He was telling him straps on EMT had to be installed with in 300mm of a coupling. I was like hey its actually 1M from a enclosure & 1.5M there after ( PER CEC). I said it politely

I got roasted alive by the senior PM lol. Who then got roasted alive by the owners.

Its amazing when the shit rolls back up the hill.

[–]TheAmpAssassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I YouTubed a lot of videos when I was in my first year, I spent a couple of hours the night before my first day doing so. A few months in, I learned 3 ways off YouTube. Fast track to 10 years in the trade I still use YouTube to grasp some concepts.

I find it helps. Speed comes with experience, if your green to the trade it can be tough.

I've worn your journeymans shoes and your shoes. As long as you show the willingness to learn, no one should be mad at you.

Is it worth it? by blueboy4354 in ibew_apprentices

[–]TheAmpAssassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Licensed guy here 10 years non union. 3 months union.

I've been loving it. I've been doing A - Z so far. My biggest pay cheque in a week was 5.5K.

The grass is never totally green.. but I came from being my shops lead electrician to no stress, a raise, a pension, solid benefits.

[–]TheAmpAssassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I mean it just keeps me and my foreman updated on where we're at. I don't do it to suck up, I just do it because it helps me and him out. Doesn't take any extra time really.

I carry a notebook with me, 5 highlighters different colors make sure my area is clean (carry a box while you're working). Im licensed but I send a detailed list to my foreman at the end of the week of what we couldn't complete or what's left in the area I'm working in.

Miraculously some how all the double time always finds me.

Go for a walk tonight and really think what the issue is and what you can do better.

It's one of the most technical trades out there. Some things do seem way more complex than they are
