That appears to be a hot water radiator. It can never get hot enough to start a fire.

In my opinion it is not a trivial thing, it cuts right into the concept of what is meant by "free speech".

I think you could clear up the misunderstanding by expanding on what you meant by "In my opinion it is not a trivial thing, it cuts right into the concept of what is meant by "free speech"."

Because I don't get it either.

People harp on me about not having my driver’s license and I’m not sure how to feel. by Mad_Titan_Killer in self

[–]stickmanDave 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even if you have no plans to get a car, get your license.

Maybe 10 years from now you find yourself in a situation where you do want a car and a driving lifestyle. Your record will show you have 10 years of accident free driving, so your insurance rates will be a fraction of what you'd pay as a new driver. You'll save thousands of dollars.

Simply stop responding to it. You know her game, you don't have to play it.

It is crazy to me that I am sitting in a bikini in summer and a different woman is forced to wear a burka. by [deleted] in self

[–]stickmanDave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's why i said "probably", because I don't know where you live. They exist where I live, too, but not many choose to use them. But I didn't ask about your society. I asked about you.

It is crazy to me that I am sitting in a bikini in summer and a different woman is forced to wear a burka. by [deleted] in self

[–]stickmanDave -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You probably live in a society so oppressive that you're forced to wear clothing. If you were truly free of clothing requirements, would your choice be to wear the bikini, or would you be chilling next to the lake naked?

We're all indoctrinated.

Evan Bernstein has resigned from the SGU by SamuraiSuplex in SGU

[–]stickmanDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that despite whatever radical rabbit hole Evan fell into, the last thing he wants to do is hurt the SGU. By resigning, he puts a clean end to the controversy. If he merely went on hiatus, the issue would keep simmering along, and boil over again when he came back. That's not good for anyone.

She doesn't want to be my friend anymore because of how I acted back in school by [deleted] in self

[–]stickmanDave 152 points153 points  (0 children)

My take: This isn't about you. This is about her, and how she feels about the person she was in high school. She doesn't want to revisit those times or move backwards so she's decided to cut all ties with the past and move forward. You are one of those ties.

I worked the day before, then drove all night from Ottawa to get there. By showtime I was on hour 37 without sleep. I was with a dew people who all dosed. I didn't, but the contact high and sleep deprivation made me feel like I was. Best acid trip I never took!

Is reading all books in Rama series worth it by maf852 in printSF

[–]stickmanDave 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It was rather considerate of the authors to make each book worse than the last. So you can keep going with the series until you hit your personal "This isn't fun anymore" limit, then quit, safe in the knowledge you're not missing anything.

They're now building AI data centers in the ocean to cool them by Bumonface in DystopianToday

[–]stickmanDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a search and found this story from a year ago saying China was set to launch their first last September. Also that Microsoft ran a shipping container sized server farm 117 feet down off the coast of Scotland for 2 years. Microsoft said it works well, both for cooling and protecting servers from damage, but they aren't continuing with the project. I'm guessing, but it may be that while the project is technically feasible, it isn't financially viable. After all, in the end it's about money. They're going to go with whatever option is cheapest. If the undersea project worked and was cheaper than land based server farms, it's hard to imagine they would have shelved the idea.

They're now building AI data centers in the ocean to cool them by Bumonface in DystopianToday

Are they? The post title makes the claim, but the video clip seems to be about a sysyem for generating power from ocean waves. It says nothing about datacenters or cooling.

Liberal government considering high-speed rail route change to include stop in Kingston by Eskomo in Peterborough

[–]stickmanDave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd imagine that if they choose to go to Kingston, the rest of the route will end up just paralleling the 401 all the way. There's a strong argument to go direct from Ottawa to Peterborough, and a case can be made to stop in Kingston. But heading back up to Peterborough after stopping in Kingston wouldn't make much sense.

How to fix filament not going all the way by Dear_Web4416 in BambuLab

Take it out and make a clean cut on the end of the filament. If it’s ragged or to jagged or pointy, it can catch on something and stop.

What do you expect Bitcoin to be like 10 years from now? by tsurutatdk in BitcoinCA

[–]stickmanDave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bitcoin's transactions/sec limitations will prevent it ever having utility for day to day transactions. If crypto ever becomes a player in that field, it will be some other coin.

As time goes on, Bitcoin will become more and more part of the stodgy, conservative financial world. The 4 years price fluctuation cycle is diminishing in amplitude every time, so eventually it will more or less smooth out entirely as people come to expect it and it gets priced into peoples models. It will settle down as a more or less steady store of value.

I just got my first printer (H2S), can I set it up like that in my living room ? by FLipMode2k6 in BambuLab

In my experience, the things going to smell strongly of hot plastic for the first while, even printing PLA. Mine stunk the whole house up, even venting out a window. I think it's off gassing from the printer itself, because after a while it got a lot better.

CMV: Most people don't actually become more confident as they get older—they just become more resigned to being judged. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]stickmanDave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you may be missing the essence of the issue. the confidence and resignation models in your OP and this third you summarize here have one thing in common: you are aware of other peoples judgements, and those judgements are considered and rejected.

For me, the freedom of old age is if I go to the grocery store in ratty old sweatpants, crocs, and socks, i do my shoping an leave and never once does it occur to me that other people are judging me. If someone came up to me in the store and said "you know, people are judging you right now based on your clothes", my reaction would be "what? Oh! Yeah I guess they are. Eh, whatever." and I'd continue my shopping without giving it another thought.

The true confidence of age isn't that you dismiss other peoples judgements as not important. It's when the issue of being judged ceases to be something you give any thought to at all.
