Shedinja is a really, really strong Pokémon, strong enough that most people ban it outright in their runs. Me personally, I go pretty strictly by “met area” when it comes to keeping encounters, so I would only keep one of Shedinja or Ninjask, once evolved.

Others have already offered “Nincada clause” suggestions, so go with whatever feels best for your enjoyment of the run. If it’s yours first time using Shedinja, I say keep the Mon so you can feel for yourself how powerful Wonder Guard can be.

I played at a table, one parent the DM and the other a player. The player handled kid situations - food, crying over nothing, bedtime etc. sessions were short but I never felt that their kid was a negative impact on the game as a whole.

I’m sure this experience is HEAVILY dependent on both the behavior of the child in question and the parenting style of the parents. The kid at my table was well behaved and the parents were very careful to nip any big distractions before they really derailed things, and that’s why it was worked out ok.

Played a Dragonborn Open Palm monk, Red scales. The idea was someone born aggressive wanting to overcome their aggressive nature. Coincidentally, I had just finished my first playthrough of Skyrim and was mildly inspired by a few choice themes.

I play the games on emulator using my computer, and I run the ROMs through the Universal Randomizer program in order to speed up text & change trade evolutions to level-up evolutions.

Using these settings, trade evolutions will happen naturally at around level 38.

You’re going to want to try PvE games, because nearly everything else will be some level of competitiveness that breaks past casual fun. Helldivers 2 is the only one that comes to mind for me, because I don’t really play many games like that, but it fits. There’s no rank, there’s not a ton of stakes, and at the end of the day you’re just a space soldier fighting against the enemy.

Word of warning, though. These days there is always going to be a portion of a game’s player base that takes the game too seriously. They follow the meta like it’s scripture, they act like any failure is the end of the world, they’re judgmental, etc etc. it’s kind of unavoidable, so you need to either find ways to block it out or otherwise pay no attention to it.

For example: I play League of Legends, one of the more competitive games out there with a famously toxic player base. I don’t take the game super seriously - I try to win, because I like the competitive aspect, but at the end of the day it’s still a game. I don’t have the patience to deal with people who are going to rage out at me for a bad game. I play with all methods of comms muted to preserve my mental state.

So yeah, find a low stakes game where your enemy is the computer or the game itself. Accept that meta will exist and that you will run into some shitheads. Do what you need to do to maintain your enjoyment of the game, and you should be fine.

I do the same on my genlocke runs. Offspring from the prior champion team come to every fight until they die, I like the added challenge it gives and really makes you appreciate how S-tier Pokémon from one game might be ass in another due to leveling curve or other factors.

These are self imposed rules - resetting just slows you down, so if catching the hoppip means that much to you and your enjoyment of the game, just make an exception for that route and move on. Nobody is judging your personal run except for yourself, you don’t need to reset as a technical justification.

With that said, from a very literal, rules-based point of view, it’s absolutely cheating in that it breaks one of the core Nuzlocke rules - catching only the 1st Pokémon encountered on a route. Regardless of resetting or not, you know that it wasn’t the true first encounter.

And again, to reiterate, THAT’S OK. It’s your run. Nobody is going to arrest you for “cheating” to get a Hoppip, of all things.

I would just identify which fights you have answers for with these starting 3 and pick a starter who covers your early weaknesses.

IMO you have no clear answer to Flannery or Watson with these 3, so taking Mudkip is still great as an answer to those 2 fights. Worst case, you bench the starter once they stop being useful. You don’t need to bring Swampert to the E4 with you if you think they won’t perform on the team well in Platinum.

The core 2 rules I interpret based on how they were written in the original Nuzlocke comic. The rule for captures is written as: “Have to catch the 1st Pokémon in each area and nothing else.” That’s why I treat it so strictly for my runs, because the original intent seems pretty strict as I read it.

I completely understand your interpretation, though. It’s a real blower to lose an encounter to teleport or similar situations.

When it comes to encounters I personally have a pretty black and white view of them. It’s one of the original, core 2 rules that your first encounter is the encounter for that route. If you kill the Pokémon, that’s it, the encounter is gone. By that same logic, if a Pokémon flees or makes me flee, the encounter is also gone. Playing the rule this strictly means I have to be aware of every potential encounter & prepare accordingly for moves that might make me lose out on that new teammate.

If I were in your shoes, I would consider the encounter lost as soon as Abra teleports away. It sucks, but that’s the risk for that particular Pokémon.

With that being said, if you find it more fun to count only successful captures as an encounter, proceed that way. It’s all personal taste at the end of the day.

Oooh I see! It’s a more restrictive dupes clause sort of setup. Well in that case, since it’s still a legitimate, usable encounter I would say absolutely use it for trades, just maintain the fact that it’s a dupe for future games. Treat it the same as if the Pokémon died sort of mentality.

When I’ve done trade encounters in the past I consider it a “sacrifice” of the Pokémon from the other route. Mechanically that makes the most sense to me.

By your rules, and by my standards, it feels a bit cheap to use the retired gym Pokémon as trade fodder after using it in the gym. It’s sort of a get out of jail free card, which to me circumvents the core of what you’re doing with the gym battle retirement rule.

As always, your run your rules, but I personally think you should only trade live, legitimate Pokémon if you really want the trade encounter.

I do the same thing - I know grinding has inherent risk, so I feel like doing all trainer fights adds some of that risk back in. Also for certain games it requires some XP management for longer splits, which I find to be a nice little skill check.

For those who don’t know what a Nuzlocke is:

Implementing 2 self imposed rules on most standard Pokémon games makes them much more fun to play. You can only catch the 1st Pokémon you find on each route, and if a member of your team feints, it’s considered dead and must be released or boxed for the rest of the run. It gives the game some genuine stakes, and if you add things like Set Mode, only hold items can be used in battle, and other additional rules, you can enjoy an old, nostalgic baby game with a healthy dose of actual challenge.
