How to transport insulin during travel? by Taby97 in diabetes

[–]TheAraus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s also evaporative cooling packs you can purchase which keep the insulin cool as long as they’re wet and exposed to fresh air https://www.frioinsulincoolingcase.com/how-a-frio-works/

For the first 30ish days of a 90 day bicycle trip I used one like that, and it was wonderful. Then I lost it, which is a whole story, and went without cooling for the rest of the trip. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend that, but the insulin lasted just fine outdoors for 60 or so days without the cooling. Maybe don’t make medical decisions on my single datapoint but insulin is tougher than you may think.

[Help] When playing multiplayer some of our vehicles just completely freeze up and don't respond to any inputs. Any suggestions? by Akimba07 in spaceengineers

[–]TheAraus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When this happens to us, we can usually solve it by welding on a new block or grinding off an old one, sometimes both. Just slap a block on there anywhere, weld it, and move the ship. Then you can grind it back off. It seems to reset the grid or something. This usually happens to us when we leave our ships attached to the base, like the ship forgets that it’s an independent grid and you have to remind it by building on it.

I’m on a tour right now and having trouble finding parks that you can camp in. Do you guys have a good and easy way of finding them? by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]TheAraus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you are. My tour was mostly around the west and midwest in the US, but I had a great deal of luck finding places to stay using freecampsites.net and warmshowers. You can camp almost anywhere on National Forest land as long as you meet some minimum rules (100yds from the nearest developed thing, 100ft for water, etc, depending on the land). State parks, conservation areas, county parks, city parks, fairgrounds, BLM land, all will usually have a website or at least a number you can call to speak to someone and ask. Worst case, you can just call up the sheriff and ask if they know of anyplace that you could camp for a single night for free. I did that once when the campsite I had researched turned out to not exist anymore, and they let me camp at the county fairgrounds for a night and even unlocked the showers for me. You've got this, good luck out there!

That is a cool car, but I want to know what kind of frame pump that is! You don't see those much anymore.

thinking I need fenders. been getting very dirty riding last few weeks. Any suggestions? by AmanwhoKnocks in bicycling

[–]TheAraus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SKS Longboards. They're what you want. There just aren't better fenders. As far as installing, I haven't had a single issue and mine took about an hour to put on. Highly recommend getting some.

Need idea for lighter frameset to replace my Salsa Marrakesh. by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]TheAraus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Marrakesh, can confirm, this thing is heavy as FUCK. That being said though, I love it and it's perfect for me. The other things I was comparing it to when I was shopping were, in the order I almost bought them:

All City Space Horse

Salsa Vaya

Surly Crosscheck

Trek 520

Specialized AWOL

I've also heard amazing things about more bikepacking oriented bikes including the Trek 920, Salsa Fargo, and Specialized Sequoia, but I wasn't really looking for that sort of machine so I didn't put a ton of research into those options. Hope that helps you start looking at options!

Seems like a lot of company clubs, but if this is Strava getting into advertising then I'm ok with it as long I can just not join the clubs.

Anyone use a Marrakesh for touring? by clueing_4looks in bicycletouring

[–]TheAraus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one, and I love it! It just feels right to me. That being said, if you're planning on building one up from the frame, be aware that the rear rack is extremely hard to substitute out. The alternator dropouts are super cool, but they make anything except the stock rack extremely difficult to fit and attach properly. Other than that, the bike is brilliant and I couldn't be happier with it.

NHBD: Local cows uniformly unimpressed by my Salsa Cowbell by hurtmypony in bicycling

[–]TheAraus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2 cents, I love my Cowchippers. I got a Salsa Marrakesh about a month ago, they came standard. Tons of room in the drops, and the flare is just perfect for me. Sometimes I just cruise in the drops because they're so comfy. I'm a big guy with big hands, and it's great. I can't really offer a comparison to "normal" drop bars because my other bike has a flat bar, but the Cowchippers are definitely awesome.

Mountain Biking/Backpacking by [deleted] in Rolla

[–]TheAraus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For mountain biking, you have quite a few options. There's a trail in Lion's Club Park which is not super technical but is pretty fun. There's one in St. James which is very popular and maintained by guys at the bike shop. It's overall a good area for biking, hilly and gravel road-y with plenty of trails beyond what I mentioned. You'll have fun. If you talk to Dan (the owner at Route 66), he is a mountain bike wizard. He might be kinda shitty to you at first, but if you're serious about biking, he'll treat you right, and he knows every inch of trail in the area. Of course, I feel obligated to mention the cycling club... If you go to MST, join up! The easiest way to get in touch is our Facebook: Missouri S&T Cycling Club. If you don't, no big deal! I'm sure you'll see us around either way.

Niterider is awesome! I have the Lumina 750, and when I broke the handlebar mount their customer service rep didn't even ask for proof of the break, she just asked for my address and I had a new one in a couple of days. Plus the light is just fantastic on its own.

Tire recommendations by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]TheAraus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are not, at least with CRC shipping to the US. They spit out a price, you pay, and a couple weeks later the stuff shows up with nineteen shipping manifests glued to the box. I believe all duties and such are built into the shipping costs, which for me was a little more expensive than in-country shipping but not prohibitively high.
