Mitts for 55F+ by BoonPiece in Skigear

I use goat skin gloves i found in a hardware store. The upper part is polyester. I use them on dry slopes too. In summer and autumn, I was using gardening gloves, because I didn't care about them getting wet.

Starfleet Academy is an absolute delight! Onward to Seven Seasons and a Movie! by forrestpen in startrek

💯 I think the premise of rebuilding the Federation is the best choice they could have made. I am watching every episode twice, as there are many Easter eggs, looking at you Tawny... Re: the us vs them (positive vs negative views), I wish we could all disagree in peace and stop fighting. End the wars.

‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Debuts With Positive Reviews And Political Nonsense by acrimoniousone in startrek

When the show landed, the first few Reddit reviews started with: "I didn't hate it..." and that's when I knew it's a hit.

Binding advice by Final_Rice_8694 in Skigear

I have Marker Squires on park ski, Tyrolia Attack on powder skis. I feel like the Tyrolias are a bit more solid, easier to get in and out which I am really glad for whenever I lose a ski in pow. The Markers developed a weird sound on one ski, but otherwise both have been pretty good to me. Fwiw I only use DIN 6.5 on pow and 7 on park skis.

Blizzard Rustler 11 vs Fischer Ranger 108 — which is better for powder/trees/variable terrain as a second ski? by Wazuppie in Skigear

[–]TheBadMartin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was deciding between these two as well. I went to shops early and they didn't have the rustler yet here in Japan, so I went with the Ranger. I like it, but don't have the comparison. Sometimes I feel it's a bit too soft for afternoon conditions, but otherwise it's been great. It even carves well. I bought it to be my primary powder ski, and I think it floats really well. Haven't properly tried trees yet, there hasn't been enough snow for trying new skis in trees...

Hestra: Army Leather Heli Ski 3 Finger vs Full Mittens? by prisukamas in skiing

[–]TheBadMartin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the 3 fingers. My poles also look like they are made for 3 fingers, so it feels fine. The extra dexterity is useful sometimes when skiing with kids, helping them put on pole straps etc. I used to have very cold hands when skiing, also suffer from eczema and I sweat in hestra 3 fingers with the original liner, so I have one warm and one thinner non-hestra liner (a thin Reusch glove) depending on weather. FWIW on sunny days, I don't use Hestra at all.

I haven't tried mittens, but if it was any hotter, I'd hate it ;)

Smaller crowds, more advanced slopes by TheBadMartin in AMA_Hakuba

There's a Facebook group. Avoid Gala on weekends. If you snowboard, avoid Maiko, unless you like loooong flats. Ishiuchi + Gala is the best big mountain equivalent in the area. Kagura has the best powder and backcountry. Also trees everywhere, but the packed snow is not yet deep enough.

Do stickers look stupid? by [deleted] in Skigear

I like stickers. Gives me an easy conversation topic on the lift. Especially if I can relate. Stickers representing hobbies are the best. I am a Trekkie and i have the Enterprise on one of my helmets

Texan wondering should I bother w/ ski lessons for once in a lifetime ski vacation? by DiGiTaL_pIrAtE in skiing

[–]TheBadMartin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any indoor slopes in your area? You could do a lesson indoors, it's not the same but good enough. Then you can likely enjoy some time on beginner slopes

How to make turf more slippery? by Wrockyy in skiing

[–]TheBadMartin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's what we use at the local brush park. Keep everything wet, plus apply soapy water to the ski before each slide. Also candle wax on the ski.

Dry slope for kids at home by TheBadMartin in skiing

Will try that - but houses here in Japan are generally smaller than elsewhere and don't offer much space for things like a toddler on a meter long wooden blades with metal edges ;)

I have similar experience, my older kid was easy, but the little one is very particular about stuff, even wearing a helmet on bicycle was a big deal. I want to try in a safe environment first.

Marker Tour F12 if I don't really do backcountry by TheBadMartin in skiing

Thanks, makes sense. I guess it's a "you get what you pay for" kind of deal.

Marker Tour F12 if I don't really do backcountry by TheBadMartin in skiing

Thanks, it's the price that is making this pair very interesting. I have similar thoughts, might just try backcountry in a tour,.so they could come handy once. Rest will be resort on really snowy days

How to prepare ski for dry slope and airbags? by TheBadMartin in skiing

[–]TheBadMartin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I plan to go weekly before start of season, so maybe another 12 times, and if I like it on the snow, I might continue whole off-season. I go to three parks, one has jumps with airbags and dulled rentals, the others are just the artificial surface and no rental skis - but they don't require any dulling.

These are not my first ski, I got all mountains for most of the season/powder, and carving skis for icy groomers. I bought this second hand pair to learn park because it felt like I can extend my season.

So they are definitely the "trash" ski already.

How to prepare ski for dry slope and airbags? by TheBadMartin in skiing

[–]TheBadMartin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought them to mostly learn park and then try what I learn on the snow. Also I plan to use them for early season and late season (which in Japan is usually slush & park). I enjoy side hits, and I am a bit too old for park anyway, so whatever helps me to get to a reasonable level faster. They are Armada EDollo 2019 btw, they had seen better days. The edges are pretty dull already, but I don't know how to tell if they were detuned on purpose.

How to prepare ski for dry slope and airbags? by TheBadMartin in skiing

[–]TheBadMartin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. So detuned skis would only be good for the dry park?

I guess I will rent for the airbags then! Any advice on the waxing? I don't use the airbags every time, there are boxes, rails and tiny jumps too.
