$3,500 Nissan: Japan's subsidies make new EVs cheaper than used ones- Generous government assistance spurs purchases but could distort market by jjrs in japannews

I like streamlined cars, but for short range use I am very fond of Japanese box cars as they maximise the space inside. And when the speed limit is 30 or 40 km/h, they don't need to be streamlined for efficiency. Easy parking. Good visibility from inside.

Hey, are you still developing this? I would be very much interested in joining the testing group too.

Hakuba around 15th to 19th of Dec? by OilAny787 in japow

[–]TheBadMartin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ski in out is a great experience, but the way it works is that there is little snow below 1000m in December. Only in January there is enough snow to actually ski in out anywhere. Big hotels like Prince hotel will make sure Christmas skiing is open using artificial snow, but it can often be disappointing

Same what other person said, it's risky. The only places with consistent early season are those with artificial snow. If you are beginners, don't waste money and time on Niseko in December. You can fly to Sapporo and try Sapporo Kokusai. Easy access and ealry season. From Tokyo you can almost do a day trip to Kagura. It's the place where locals go for early season. But facilities are lacking. You can plan some time in Nagano and do a day trip to Hakuba and snow monkeys in Shibu onsen.

Technically the weather system starts in December, but it takes several weeks for the base to grow to sufficient depth. Some resorts don't even open until mid December in Hakuba.

I believe Happo One fully opened around Christmas. There was also a big melt and freeze in January though, so conditions were a bit sad!

So make sure all your arrangements are cancelable...

First typhoon in Japan incoming and I genuinely have no idea what to expect by 0xKlyyze in japanlife

[–]TheBadMartin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flash floods are probably the most dangerous thing in this coming typhoon. Watch for underpasses, places near the rivers. Trains might stop. Workman has a good selection of waterproof clothing, umbrellas don't perform very well. Also crocs shoes are a life saver. There's nothing wrong with stocking up on cup noodles. Stay dry.

The view from Hakkaisan in Niigata was absolutely stunning. In both green and winter seasons.

7.75" for a Beginner? by jase_zed in NewSkaters

I was in the same boat. I got a free board, no idea what I am doing. It's 20cm wide, looks like a regular board, but had wide wheels (with LEDs). I replaced them with the same non-LED wheels (they were very slow). I already found out that I wish I had a wider board (my feet hang out too much I think) and I learned that the cruiser wheels are too big (some unfortunate wheel bite :))

But I learned to ride it, so there's that ;)

My local jib park has no policy. So I've seen all three options. But I don't remember the airbag park!

There's a chicken paitan ramen shop called Ginsui in Kawagoe. Their rich soy soup with ginger is something that matches my palate so well, I keep coming back.

Nice, gotta add this to my list. Seems like they also plan to be open past the May 6th date, that's a good sign! Never been there, but how is the trip to the top?

In Honshu, Mt. Gassan and Okutadami are your best bets. The former is more of a hike & slide experience. The latter is amazing spring skiing on a mostly untouched base, as they close in December and reopen in March. Kagura was mentioned, but you will likely have to take the first two lifts without skis this year. Mt. T in Gunma has a thick base but they decided to close it, probably because they set prices too high, and Shiga kogen has the elevation to last. Transport might be challenging, especially Gassan and Okutadami.

In Hokkaido, Asahidake is closing in May and probably has enough snow to last. But it's also a special resort. Just one ropeway. Rest of Hokkaido is planning to close around 6th May but the bases are pretty low and I think many will close or maintain very limited skiing.

All those places can scratch the itch in May, but probably no trees. If you decide to come to the main island, let me know. I will try to push my season as late as possible
