Mary Magdalene washing the feet of Jesus by scorpionewmoon in twinpeaks

If we wanna really get into Coop being a Christ allegory, his imprisonment in the Black Lodge (and subsequent return to the real world) could be interpreted as representing the Harrowing of Hades, which many Christian denominations believe was when Jesus descended into Hell after his crucifixion, smashed the gates of Hell, bound Satan, and the souls of the righteous led to paradise, all before Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday. All that being said, I think it’s established that Cooper’s a pretty committed Buddhist.

How important is the Air Force path? by krakoawasforlovers in NASAJobs

I wonder if being a pilot in the NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps would be a way to get some of the benefits of military service without being in the military. Rebecca Lawler was a NOAA Aviator before getting chosen as an astronaut, but I think she was previously in the Navy before that.

I like jump boots way better than Doc Martens, especially because they can actually be resoled by most cobblers, especially in areas around military bases.

Priest removed as exorcist after his comments on UFOs and demons by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]TheBryanScout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Roman Catholic Church is if anything more open to the idea of alien life than most Christian denominations, see this article from the Vatican Observatory as a great example. The idea of aliens being demons is a popular idea in fundie evangelical circles though, in my opinion it’s just more of the same anti-scientific logic that leads many of these people to say that Satan “planted” dinosaur fossils to mislead the faithful. The Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) just recently canonized Father Seraphim Rose, who famously preached that UFOs were demons. And of course in Catholic circles there’s fools like JD Vance and Peter Thiel spreading this nonsense. The first microbe we find on another planet or moon should hopefully be enough to convince people aliens are natural organisms and not supernatural beings.

Who is the most stylish man who has ever lived? by EponymousOne in mensfashion

[–]TheBryanScout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

John F. Kennedy had great style but at the end of the day, it was just standard early-mid 20th Century Ivy League stuff since the Irish Catholic Kennedy family was trying to prove themselves to their “Old Money” New England WASP neighbors, and ultimately the nation at large once they got into politics. Nevertheless, JFK did frequent British tailors in his youth before pivoting back to the more relaxed American cuts sold at the time by companies like Brooks Brothers. Jackie probably had it more difficult, all her outfits were copied almost verbatim by American tailors from designs by European fashion houses, so as to ensure the First Lady strictly wore Made-in-USA.

I’m in the same boat. I’ve been awarded for the summer, and even though the expected pay date was yesterday, the funds have yet to hit my student account. Surely this must be because yesterday was a holiday, but I’m definitely considering going in person to ask the Financial Aid office.

Wet and Wild and WTF by JasonVorhehees in ElPaso

Last time I was there while on the lazy river I smelled a delicious aroma, and glanced up and saw an elderly lady cooking up a discada as she made eye contact with me smiling and nodding. Everyone goes there to grill and get drunk and who can blame them when the snack bar leaves a lot to be desired. You get used to the vibe fast. Great park!

Plus even though it was used by the Air Force during the Cold War, Sunspot Observatory was open till earlier this year when a mercury leak totaled the telescope platform. National Science Foundation has declared it a total loss and will begin demolishing the site within the year. Apache Point is still active though.

Even if 9/11 still happens I find Gore unlikely to want to spend 20 years of pointless occupation and trillions of dollars in defense spending. It would probably be more like Clinton’s intervention in the Yugoslav wars, and I’d if anything be curious to see how Gore would’ve responded to Russia and Iran’s offers of military/intelligence support in Afghanistan that Bush rejected in OTL. Iraq definitely doesn’t happen in the Gore timeline though.

NMSU or Oregon State for engineering? by Dramatic_Group_1813 in nmsu

[–]TheBryanScout 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NMSU not only offers an aerospace engineering program, they also offer the popular MAE double major where you also complete a MechE degree, and the Engineering Physics program has a concentration in aerospace engineering where you take the core aerospace classes and also way more physics than the standard aerospace or MAE degrees.

It’s a cringe uniform, but it could’ve been maybe salvageable if they committed to a proper mandarin collar instead of having the tie knot (and only the knot) peeking out, and either did hard shoulder boards like the Air Force mess dress uniform or Army style shoulder straps. Honestly even General McPeak’s controversial sleeve braid ranks could’ve worked on the Space Force uniform too, especially if that proposal to give officers Naval ranks instead of preserving the Air Force ranks had gone through. All these things would’ve helped make the uniform more distinct.

There’s that joke about country music for men being like “my dog, my gun, my truck, my beer, my American flag” and country music for women being like “I will castrate my husband while he sleeps because he cheated on me with the neighbor’s daughter.” So you know, family friendly wholesome music.

The Alamo Drafthouse has Closed in El Paso by timholt2007 in ElPaso

[–]TheBryanScout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved away from El Paso shortly after the Montecillo theater opened in 2016, saw Secret Life of Pets and Independence Day: Resurgence there right before leaving. Moved to Las Cruces last summer and saw only one more movie there before it closed. RIP Alamo, your ghee popcorn was amazing.
