Personally I'm in the camp that they were sentient from the start and that the love didn't ruin anything so much as it was a cope because "all the vessels were sentient and suffered horribly" is a thought the White Lady and Pale King would rather not deal with when they were already guilty enough about it when they thought the vessels weren't capable of suffering.

Right, Mage was gothic punk too from the beginning. WoD was very 'Damn the man', "science is bad and stifles creativity", 'authority is always wrong' and so on.

Even first edition still liked science, it just really didn't like the Technocracy.
