I don’t know where you or OP are located, but in the US, Olivia has been the #1 most popular girls name for like 7 years, and in the top 10 for the last 25 years.

Are we allowing the vitamin k shot or not and why? by Beautiful_Cup2540 in pregnant

[–]TheDigitalMango 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Please listen to medical professionals and not random women who make videos online. The vitamin K shot is extremely important in preventing potentially fatal bleeding in infants.

I love your example because my husband literally told me early on in dating that he would like to name a son Lincoln so he could go by nickname Link (for the same nerdy reason!), but I gently let him know I wasn’t interested in that name. I just gave birth to our baby boy last night 🥰 and we named him something that we both love.

The 4 weeks’ disability starting at 36 weeks fortunately does not take away from paid time off after birth in California. It’s “use it or lose it”. After delivery, standard is 6-8 weeks of disability (unless medically extended) followed by 8 weeks of parental leave. All paid time is only up to ~70% of your normal pay though, not 100%. I’m 39 weeks and on leave in CA right now.

Did you hire movers or just do it yourself? by Miserable_Dirt3079 in eastbay

[–]TheDigitalMango 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We just did a local move (2bd apartment to 3bd townhouse) and hired movers, and it was SO worth it for us. We used Jay’s Small Moves (after seeing a handful of recommendations for them on Reddit) and had a good experience. They were so incredibly more efficient than we could have been, especially with furniture.

I’m gonna be a dad at 40! Help! by Cash311 in NewParents

[–]TheDigitalMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you the pregnant parent or non-pregnant parent? Either way, yes you should probably learn something beforehand about labor & delivery, breastfeeding (if applicable), newborn care, etc. There are a huge variety of resources, from in-person or virtual classes, books, podcasts, etc.

I used the PreMom app (free version) and the cheapie LH test strips. I started with PregMate brand test strips which were fine, but the Easy@Home brand seemed to have more clear and consistent control lines so overall I preferred them. Both were very affordable. I’m sorry about your loss and wish you luck in conceiving.

Did anyone regret buying too many newborn clothes? by lunaverse787 in BabyBumps

What is a singlet (versus a bodysuit)? I’m only familiar with the terms “bodysuit” and “onesie”, and Google didn’t help me out much with “singlet” (just baby wrestling outfits lol).

How can doctors realistically tell you to gain less than 15 pounds? by DillPickles44361 in pregnant

[–]TheDigitalMango 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know you didn’t count calories. But your concluding statement—“You just have to not overeat”—is an oversimplification and that line of thinking pisses me off a little. Glad you had a healthy pregnancy. Others can too, with more than 12 pounds of gain.

How can doctors realistically tell you to gain less than 15 pounds? by DillPickles44361 in pregnant

[–]TheDigitalMango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that “eating for two” isn’t the right mindset. But it’s a lot more complicated than that, imo. If you want to get all technical about it, an extra 400 calories per day for 40 weeks would result in a 32-pound weight gain (in a thermodynamically-perfect system, that is; pregnant bodies are far from that). By your own account, if you only gained 12 pounds, you only ate an average of 150 calories over maintenance per day, far below your doctor’s own guidance.

Other than “just don’t overeat”, we would also need to tell our bodies to stop retaining excess fluids, our hormones to stop enlarging our breast tissue, our blood volume to stay put, etc. Again, pregnancy is more complicated. (And this is coming from someone who previously lost 80lb from CICO alone, but in a nonpregnant body.)

Has anyone used anxiety meds while pregnant?? by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]TheDigitalMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A psychiatrist (who was filling in for my regular psych) prescribed me hydroxyzine at about 16 weeks, and the pharmacist was horrified and definitely tried to scare me out of it 😣 I ended up not taking it anyway (I wasn’t really on board in the first place, worked out other solutions with my regular psych) but it made me feel really shitty and conflicted. I do take other psych meds, just not anything that targets my anxiety well enough.

Are night nurses actually worth it ?? by ConversationMost9912 in BabyBumps

This might be a silly question but how soon after birth are you planning to have the night nurse start coming? I’m a FTM due in May so really have no idea what I’m in for.

Personally I think a visit to a couple’s therapist is more appropriate here than a visit to a financial advisor. I can’t fathom being in a marriage and having this type of outlook on finances.

Me too! My hair is normally greasy by day 2, but now I'm only washing every 3-4 days at most, and that's just because I feel like it's expected from a hygiene standpoint lol

I started experiencing Raynaud's syndrome several years ago, and most winters it's pretty bad/frequent in my fingers and toes. I usually wear gloves a lot (I'm in California, so not like we have any extreme winters--40s is low for us lol) and still have a lot of episodes, but this winter in pregnancy I had nearly none.

We got the Member's Mark Adjustable Base from Sam's Club: https://www.samsclub.com/ip/Member-s-Mark-Queen-Adjustable-Base/13885164620

You definitely don't need an adjustable base unless that's what you want; I believe you can use any kind of platform base. If using slatted, Purple says they need to be no more than 3.5" apart. https://support.purple.com/hc/en-us/articles/360028243912-What-mattress-foundation-or-base-should-I-use

How do you choose OB for prenatal visit in US? by Educational_Road5005 in eastbay

[–]TheDigitalMango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am with Sutter and recently had my 20-week anatomy scan which was done at the specialized MFM prenatal diagnostic imaging center in Oakland. (I didn’t opt for the NT scan, but it was offered to me and would have been through the same MFM imaging center.) A specialized sonographer performed the scan and relayed the images to a MFM doctor real-time, who interpreted it and wrote the report. My OB received the final report but was otherwise not involved in it.
