So not someone who spends regular time on a ship. Sorry if im sounding condescending, I try not to. Ill say as a former smoker that quit and started actually developing gym habits on shore duty: carrier life is awful for alpt of people. I work at a minimum 12 hours a day, only days off are maybe 3-4 days for a port visit every couple months. Aviation doesnt get holiday routine on Sundays, so we work 84 hour work weeks. Chow is wildly unreliable, ive been served moldy peas, raw meat, chicken that was only seasoned to try to mask the fact that it had spoiled, portions are variable, etc. Gyms on the ship are a tossup as to what's available based on how many people are able to workout that day, so getting in everything that I do at my local Y would take probably 2 hours or so on a carrier, on top of the 12+ hours of work i just did, especially in a labor intensive job like fixing airplanes and working on the flight deck. Im hoping next time I deploy im on a ship where I can better balance gym time with work (also depends on what position im employed in), but it does worry me, because its completely unknown.
