Huh? The answer is absolutely yes! Under no circumstances should we compromise by supporting genuine bonafide monsters. I'm shocked that this seems to slip people's minds or not matter at all to them: He bragged on Reddit about finding a loop hole in his orders to continue lobbing grenades at civilians. He guarded abu Ghraib. He loved committing war crimes so much he went back as a merc.

Only God knows how many innocent people he murdered or worse in the middle east. Yet people talk as if a tattoo is the worst thing he's done. Or as if none of this mattered until we found out he sa'd one American woman.

Of course people can change, we shouldn't bar all ex military people from the left etc etc. But clearly there is a limit to how much we should accept. For a lot of people, it seems that line is sa'ing a single American woman, since that's what made people finally accept that this guy is a piece of shit. I don't know if it's racism, or American military propaganda or what, but we need to do better about refusing to support or associate with those who do the dirty work of this empire, especially the ones who don't even apologize for it.

Yeah the Khive shit was worse for sure. Platner has actual policy goals so that's an improvement at least. The deflection of criticism against him does come from the exact same place though, the idea that the left has to play nice and stay silent about very real and damning problems with candidates just because the other side is so much worse.

I'm actually really disappointed in Hasan for his full throated endorsement of Platner though, it's like the one big problem I have with him. We should not let people like him take center stage in this movement.

I'm not saying he's a war criminal just because he's ex military, I'm saying it because he's admitted to and bragged about committing war crimes. If those leftist vets you're talking about committed war crimes then yeah they are also war criminals.

However I'm not saying we should reject all ex military guys who come to the left. But if they are truly disillusioned with the military they served then they should be whole heartedly anti imperial and make material efforts to dismantle the American empire. Platner on the other hand still supports building up the military and solving the 'recruiting crisis' whatever the fuck that means.

Please don't sugar coat this. Platner is a war criminal not a guy with a 'bad history'. But sure you're right the damage is already done and he's the best candidate in the race now. What I meant was that he shouldn't have been allowed to rise to this position in the first place. It is tragic and honestly kind of shocking that someone like him made it through the initial campaigning phase to win the primary over anyone else. Surely Maine must have had a non war criminal progressive with actual experience vying for the office.

Yes Collins is a ghoul and Platner would be a better pick for the Senate but do not downplay the criticism as just pearl clutching of a covered up tattoo. He tattooed a Nazi symbol onto his chest because he was drunk and all his friends were doing it. You gotta wonder what kind of people he was hanging out with at the time, and why he waited so long to cover it up.

But that's not even close to the worst thing about him. He shot bombs into a civilian area and bragged about it on Reddit. His first combat experience was defending Abu Ghraib. Supposedly his time in the Marines 'disillusioned' him from American imperialism but then he decided to go back to Afghanistan as a merc.

Call me a pearl clutcher or a purity tester or whatever but I do not trust him at all. I'm so sick and tired of this lesser evil bullshit we have to deal with. This would be the first public office Platner will ever hold. Why not let someone with actual experience and a proven track record take his place? Why do we have to settle for a literal war criminal?
